AENIGMA01 - C3C Training on Monarch - Conq/Dom

Hi! I just got C3C after a hiatus from Civ3 altogether. Looking to get a good training game going. I usually build, and want to do something different for once...

Okay. Here's the map stats:
Playing as: Maya
World size: Small map
World: Pangaea, 70%
Temperature: Random
Barbs: raging
Rivals: Standar for small map
Difficulty: Monarch
Victories enabled: all
Desired victory: conquest or domination
respawn: on
Ai aggression: normal

Would like to do zero research (is this a horrible idea if going for conquest or domination, since hard to kill and play broker?)

Please elaborate as much as you can on why actions were made instead of just what the decisions were while submitting turns as this is more of a training game.

Pretty standard, 24 hrs to get the save and 48 to play & post the save. Please post skips or delays so that everyone stays informed....

Also, no exploits will be used (RoP rape, Palace Jump, etc.). If something is questionable, bring it up and we'll discuss!

Zero research is better strategy for Emperor/Diety levels.
Monarch AIs as so lousy, human player usually outresearches them as early as mid-AA.
With zero research we will have to spend a lot of time waiting for the next tech, and often AIs research not the one we really want

I like start one. Hills, wine, and it's on a river. Start 2 doesn't look bad, neither.

Lurkers Comment: I like start A personally (river, lux, coast) only problem is that little marsh that i see but since you are industrious that wont be a hassle. I will lurk this game too.

lurker's comment: Should be interesting to follow this SG. I think probably the best starts are #1 and possibly #3 if there is a river around, #2 just has bonus grasslands, nothing extraordinary to that start. I'll see what you guys have to say about this.

Alright, let's do this up.

Going with start A to to fully take advantage of Maya's Agricultural.

I've been trying no research (or 10%) in a couple of my other games, and doing horribly (really behind in tech) , so I'd like to stick with it to learn to trade and fight (I'm sure this will be good preparation for heading into emperor in the future). Being Pangaea, there should be a decent amount of trading to start off with, so shouldn't be *too* slow.

My thoughts on moves:
Worker move 1 NW, road then mine. Warrior can take advantage of the road to get on hill.

Sounds good to me.

As for the capital location. I suggest to either move settler to the river, or better move it one tile close to wine.

Why move the settler? Isn't he already on the river AND coastal??? Unless we want the wine in our immediate city radius and not wait 10 turns when it becomes ours anyway...

Coastal locations are not the best for a capitol city due to the loss of shields in the coastal tiles. And we are going to be shield short in the capitol in any case.

The second city can build on the coast if we think it's important but on a pangaea map and not starting with alphabet for curraghs it is less important to have an early coastal town, especially since the visible coast tiles offer no food bonuses. The hill vineyards will give 2f1s1g on the river without a road and 2f2s2g with a road and mine in despotism and 2f3s2g in any other government and more gold in Republic.

If we had alphabet(curraghs) or bronze working (Colussus) as a starting tech then a coastal capitol is worth a look, but even then not as critical as having maximum available food and shields.

And away we go.

Settler moves upriver and worker goes to forest to get the wood for the granary. And it turns out we have two tribes of barbarians and two hilly vineyards in the neighborhood.

Our only food bonus will be in the city center, but the hill vineyards will give two shields when mined so we can probably do a worker/warrior/settler cycle in 10.

Founding Chichen Itza reveals another vineyard on a hill. Set research to zero on Cermonial Burial. And start building the granary and chopping the forest. Ceremonial Burial is a cheap useless tech and I want the hut pops to give us something more expensive and useful if the gods are on our side.

In 3450 the rotten Aztecs show up and bust the goody hut as the borders expand. They have Warrior Code for sale in exchange for Masonry and 7g. The expansionist, therefore scouting, Americans and Inca are also out there with Masonry (learned this from CrpMapStat or from f10 so I decide to take the deal in order to get some value from Masonry.)

Second forest chop happens right on time and granary builds precisely on turn before growth in 3250. Next build is worker.

In 3200 Chichen grows to pop3 and the luxury slider moves up a notch. Aztecs have researched Bronze Working. Their cash position hasn't changed so they didn't buy it from somebody and I don't think they got it from a hut.

In 3100 the second worker is trained and I send him to pop the hut to the southeast and in 3050 we learn Bronze Working from the Inuits and Chichen is training its first warrior.

The warrior will finish just as the Aztecs come nosing around our empty garrison.

Once the worker on the west side of the river roads the wines and the warrior is done lux tax can come down to 0. The second worker should move to the plains on the east bank and irrigate then road. Once the second warrior is done then send him scouting down the coast to the SW. North and west looks to be too full of marsh and jungle to bother with right now.

We have great commercial possibilities with the plains along the river and the vineyards. I went for the granary early to get the faster population growth to take advantage of that. Getting shields will be a little tougher as mining the hills takes twice the effort of mining a bonus grassland but at least we don't have to worry about food to support the miners on the vineyards when the time comes. I didn't put any mines on the grasslands because I got the same output from the irrigated plains at half the effort and the plains gave river commerce bonuses as well. The roaded vineyards will also deliver more commerce and the same shield output as a mined and roaded grassland for about the same worker effort.

With the number of expansionist and fast scouting nations out there we can wait for them to come to us while we build a treasure chest for dealing. Also at Monarch the Ai research pace willl be slow so it will be cost effective to wait for them to learn something useful and trade it around.
