AG1 - I dream of Dromons (deity)

check, all fine. a bit shocked by empty size 4 town, I must say. Remember barb horses.....

aggie says, he wants Great Lighhouse placement decision dicussed. I will hold on playing right here.

That was quite safe since we had enough tiles lit all round Constantinople that a barb horse could not ambush us from the fog, and Constantinople can build a unit in 1-2 turns anyway.

As for the lighthouse discussion, as I say, I would favour the white dot in my map, which Greebley has as a light blue dot in his dotmap. That is on a hill, river and coastal, it has a bonus grass immediately, lots more grass for mining, an iron hill and forests available too. Even at size 3 it could be pulling in 8spt (gross, probably 6 net) if you mined the bonus grass and iron hill and set it to no growth (working the forest with citizen 3). If we can spare the time to get it bigger, we would also pull in an extra shield from the centre tile at size 7. That strikes me as the perfect spot.

aggie: colorblindness is NOT fun - I apologize. blue is NOT green, and all who cannot distinguish that have my deepest smyphaties.

aggie, what then? you mixed either green and blue or ligh blue and white.... :p

Maybe Aggie was looking at the light blue dot on my dotmap, which is near the iron and not coastal.

A little revelation about the map: it was made by a friend of mine with the variant rules in mind. So it is NOT a random map. He assured me that he only did minor tweaks.

That, of course, throws all my theories on luxuries out the window :D :(

If that is the cae, then you are right, we should indeed get cracking with the Statue of Zeus, just in case ivory has been placed elsewhere on the map too.

I agree on the light blue (white on Nad's dotmap) location for the lighthouse as well

You all are reminding me I really need to number the dots for clarity. In this case it isn't too bad, but I already have 2 shades of yellow for example. I have done this before and it worked well.

I wonder if his minor tweaks included gifting us Ivory? We do have 2 luxes on our continent which is unusual. I am going to lower my odds estimate to 50% if it is a modified map. 2 Luxes and 1 civ is very suspicious.

[Edit: Make that 10% chance of it being unique. I have changed my mind. The ivory was added to make our lives easier. The terrain type the ivory occurs on is not rare enough for there to be only 1. The case I saw with only one had only a single example of the correct terrain type (like gems on mountains with only 1 mountain - I don't remember exactly what, but it was something like that).

(5) lux up again, folks, we can't run 30-40% lux all the time! 1 curragh done, another ordered. warrior heals. MMing selected. No deals for math to 2for1 for WC.
(6) warrior appraoches barbs via hills.
(7)
(8) settler, spear ordered. where to? Nads light blue spot I think ;) warrior fortifies next to barb camp. Should keep them from running into our lands too easily.
(9) Varna founded, warrior ordered.
(10) lux back up to 30% mm Const for growth/tax, spear in 1.

accidently pressed RETURN, save thus is at start of turn 11 - sorry!

Constantinople is now on Colossus, I assume that is the automatic choice after building a spear. We should however expand more atm. That means settlers, units and workers (we have only 1 worker atm). The curraghs where the right call given the variant AND given the fact that we can profit from our seafaring trait NOW.

Workers should improve the tiles around Nicaea to assure The Great Lighthouse.

Got it, will try to deliver in the next couple of hours.
( Just completed a 14 hour stint at work... Recompiling Oracle apps is not fast on five year old servers. )

Aggie1, where we show the world what naval power is all about.

Fix the empty Colossus, and start settler instead. ( Tough choice, and I may change my mind when I go through the other cities. )
There is a twofer out there, but we cannot afford the entry ticket of Mathematics.
I have some doubts about the min science on Map Making. I would have imagined we would want to go full spede ahead. I then realize min science is full speed ahead with our not great economy. We lack roads.
I will wait to road up the ivory. We need to focus on improving the Lighthouse city.

1600 Use our warrior to frag the barb camp before they started sprouting horses.
Constantinople is at 4 food per turn surplus. Unfrtunately we do not have any good options other than wasting the surplus food, as long as we are in Despotism.

IBT: Abe starts Colossus

1575 Constantinople grows, and lux is adjusted.

IBT: Varna completes warrior, and starts granary. Caesaria completes curragh, and starts worker. I do not like building workers before granaries, but we are hurting for roads/improvements.

1550 MM Constantinople for gold instead of shields with the settler due in one.
The MM for gold allows me to lower lux as well, making even more money for us. Unfortunately the 2fer is gone now, and we are way behind in tech.

IBT: Constantinople completes settler, and starts a rax. I want it to alternate between workers/settler/army, and thus we can spend the next couple of turns building a rax.
Adrianople completes a rax, and starts a warrior.

1525 Settler can reach one of the dots in one turn, and do so.

IBT: Brennus saves us some money, establishing an embassy.

1500 Smyrna is founded and starts a worker.
With the embassy in place, I can see that Celts and Incans are duking it out.

IBT: Abe demands 24 gold, and I give him that. I want to keep him open as tarding partner, not to mention we do not even have archers....
Akkad in Babylon completes the Colossus. A wounded barbarian galley moves up to our Curragh heading for Mandalgovi for contact.

1475 I manage to move our second curragh withing range of the barbarian pirates as well.

IBT: Both our Curraghs defeat their hunters :band: . Incans cascade to Pyramids, Japanese to Oracle.

1450 Using ctrl-D I can make contact with Mongols, even though they do not have any troops I can click on. They open up the 2fer again, since they do not have Math.
Incans have got Philosophy. It is possible they were not first, since they do not have any extra visible techs. NOrmally AI choses Map Making for this. It is of course possible they chose Polytheism, or if they are really ahead Construction/Currency.
We can of course not buy into Philosophy at second, but we need to keep our heads up for this possible threefer.
Some creative financing make it possible to buy into Philosophy for 29 gpt and 60 gold. ( Our normal income is 10 gpt. Incans auditors are bribeable though, so they tell the great chief we can pay this amount... )
Argg, Philosophy and our remaining money is not enough to buy Math. I buy Mysticism+40 gold from Japan for Philosophy.
Philosophy and 95 gold gets us Math from America
Philosophy gets us Warrior code, 17 gold and 1 gpt from Celts.

Inca is now up HOrseback and Construction, and are likely to become rather powerful if they do not squander our treasury which they got. Time to regain some of our money.
Japan and America are also up HOrseback.
I dial up the Mongols.

Mongols give us Horseback and 313 gold for Mathematics...... :o
I will check back on the Mongols next turn, to see if Math has netted them some good money from their probable neighbours. Hopefully I can get something out of Philosophy which we have on them.

So, to make it short. I payed: 29 gpt and 155 gold, and I got five techs, 370 gold and 1 gpt. I think it was worth the time to do the creative financing....

At zero lux, and zero science we are running -6 gpt. Lets hope the AIs do not demand away our reserve...

IBT: I made the mistake of thinking a content worker was a happy worker, and Constantinople riots. I will have to crank up the lux tax a notch. :(

1425 Fix unhappiness

IBT: Adrianople warrior->Warrior,Caesara Worker->Granary

1400 Constantinople grows, and gets a tax collector. It is due to finish its rax, but you could veto that for something else. the shields are there.
Worker out of Caesarea goes out to chop the woods and help build the granary before roading ivory.
Warrior starts the long trek towards becoming an MP for our Lighthouse building city.

Save is here.

So it may very well be that we won't be/aren't first to get Map Making. Let's hope that our pre-build will do the trick, but I'm a bit afraid that an unimproved city like Nicaea will have a hard time. We are still very light in the workers.

Great tech deal Grimjack :)

That's some pretty masterful trading :goodjob:. I'm not too optimistic about our chances for the Lighthouse though unless we switch Constantinople over to it and use the Mausoleum as a prebuild maybe ? Of course, that would set our settler production back significantly......

BTW, I found out today that I'll be unavailable Sunday and Monday due to the death of my grandmother, so please skip or swap me if my turn comes up by then.

My condolances Jack...

If we don't get The Great Lighthouse, this variant will turn out the be brutal. I think it should be number one on our lists, even when it delays growth at the moment. Jack has an excellent point and we may want to switch Contantinople to Mausoleum NOW. The shields for the barracks are an excellent prebuild for that. It could get ugly with a cascade and we may even end up with the Mausoleum when we can't afford map making. What do others think?
