Age of Mythology

Good!? All they use is melee units. No match for 15 or 20 Hero Fanatics! (they don't even have to be heroes). As for archers, well the offshore siege ships make quick work of that!

That's on easy though. But still, the AI isn't THAT good, even on lower difficulties.

Now, a hard AI to beat would be the Easiest AI in Empire Earth II: Art of Supremacy. You'd be sitting there twiddling your thumbs, next thing you konw, bad guys unload on your shores, they get beaten and while you're trying to research all techs, BAM they've advanced to the next age. In the vanilla game, they'd sit in primitive ages and take forever to age up. In the expansion, the AI just got better, which is bad for a pansy like me!

Back to Age of Mythology: I like to play as Gaia or Isis, or Hades. I don't like to play as the Norse

Maybe I'm playing the wrong game because I see the AI build plenty of ranged units. Like I said, if I decide to spam melee units, all of a sudden a load of toxotes show up at my base. They build counters so it's not fair to say they build just melee units. That is what makes this AI different from other AIs. Other RTS's AIs build a mixed squad all the time. They don't tailor their army to counter whatever you're building like the AOM AI. From what you wrote about EE2, it's a different kind of "better AI". That AI techs fast and yes, that does lend itself to providing a good butt-kicking. I'm just saying that the AOM AI has a different style of playing well.

As for civs, I actually like Norse because of their resource model and the ulfsark (sp?) for forward building. Battering Ram is also very fun. For myth units, Hekagigantes is my favorite.

Of course, I don't play Empire Earth II these days. That game was all graphics, no gameplay, as Maddox said about certain games. Empire Earth II wins the imaginary urinating contest, that's for sure. Empire Earth I is better though in terms of gameplay.

Now Age of Mythology has replayability. It must be the island maps that the enemy likes to build melee units, or horses, which Fanatics can tear to shreds with two swords!

Anubites and Mummies FTW!

I always found the Atlanteans to be somewhat overpowered. Either that, or almost unfairly easy to play well.

Really? I remember how i usually got my backside handed to me, whenever i played as a Greek against a non Greek!
Edit: Nevermind, turns out that Atlanteans are part of the expansion pack i've never played.

Yeah perhaps. I never played island maps. It's because I've never seen an AI play well on an island map in ANY game so I just didn't bother. From what you wrote, it appears that the AOM AI sucked in that dept as well.

Ah yes, now I remember what the Fanatic is. That is one of the coolest units in the game. A pure offensive unit.

Edit: I got to pull back on my "bland" comment on AOE3. It seems like this Asian Dynasties expansion (+ Warchiefs) will finally give me the RTS standard of 3 unique civs (Euro variations, Native variations, Asian variations) just like the vanilla AOM game. The reason I thought it was bland compared to AOM is that there are 3 unique civs with 3 variations to each. For example, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades for Greeks. However in vanilla AOE3, it had like 1 unique civ and like 8 variations for it. Those variations weren't different enough to give me the feeling of playing different races.

One thing I don't like in many games is the lack of fleets.

In Act of War: High Treason, I was excited about the navies you'll be playing. Too bad the navies can only be built in LAN or multiplayer games as there is no Navy for skirmish games :(

I want to fight ships with Harpoon Missiles and see how my ships do well in battle. That Cougar is wasted space on the Visby!

Anyway, same for AOM. The AI would send 2 triremes and harass fishing boats and then your siege ships would easily sink the enemy and you'd rebuild your fishing boats. Boring, I want to see a huge fleet or something!
