Air Conditioning

Well... summer is definitely here, a nice balmy 34 deg here today.

That means that some people will be putting on the air conditioning. I for one hate air conditioning, the air tastes like puke , you over freeze yourself, and it makes it feel that much hotter when you go outside. :saiyan:

I set up a couple of high powered fans at stategic points in my apartment, that feels good!

What does the rest of yas think?

Try living in Florida for a decade without AC. Its a modern convenience that should be embraced.

A fan is nice for going to sleep@( the silky caress helps send me off to snoresville)@but for any daytime activity AC is the only way to go. Especially if it is both hot and humid.

Depending mainly on the humidity levels, I try to use it as little as possible. While driving I prefer having the windows down, but if it's humid I'll turn on the AC.

In the house I open all the windows at night, let the cool air through the house, then close them and the blinds in the morning to keep the hot air out. This works to an extent except on those really hot days.

Well, it gets pretty hot in my room without the AC and my fan, with my lizard's heat lamp and my computer going. AC rocks.

I find it fascinating how some fans can be huge and suck so bad, and a smaller fan is so much better. Never get a square shaped fan, they never work. I find that these fans are the best. I have a desk fan like those at the bottom and its the best i've ever had. It's fairly cheap too. Mine is a slightly older model that has 3 settings, oscillates, is easy to use, has a detachable front grille which is very easy to put back on and take off. The fan blade itself is easy to clean. The fan itself was easy to put together. The only beef i have with it is that it tips over fairly easily, at least when i run into it getting out of bed when i put it next to me when i sleep. Luckily its a beast and runs fine and is in good shape after multiple falls. I went on for a while about this fan, but it is so awesome that it deserves it.

It is supposed to be 94 degrees tomorrow in New York. Walking around in corporate dress in that weather is brutal. Working all day without AC: unthinkable.

@$#%! You couldn't be more wrong!!!!! I LOVE the square shaped fan!!!! (Ohwell, that's a fan that comes in a square frame).

The square fan has been responsible for three hurricanes and two tornadoes in my apartment, I love it. THose small fans managed to cool one specific square metre, that's about it.

@Bose - you're not going to get much sympathy from a Canadian when it hits -2C. At the equivalent time here (December) we pray for -2!

No way man, square fans suck. What model do you use? I've used 6 square fans and they have all sucked, no matter how much racket they have made. One of them even fell over when you put it on the 2nd of three settings! It kept falling over even after surrounding it with stuff to keep it upright, so i chucked it off my roof, it was a fitting end for the inefficient hulk. Don't worry, i picked up the pieces, after i beat it to a pulp, Office Space style.

I don't know the brand name, it's an old one I found in the basement of the house I used to rent a flat in. I have it going right now, aahhhhhh the nice cool breeze

Try living in 110+ and seeing people wearing sweaters in the office because the AC is set so damn cold.

Not that I'm complaining about AC in general ... I wouldn't live here without it in my car and house.

It was 95 degrees (No I will not convert it to metric, bastards) today and my car needs a freon charge, woe is me.

My parents don't have AC in their house. They live in Fremont, CA, about 25 miles southeast of SF. They say if they ever replace the furnace they'll put in a central air system.

The east bay can get pretty hot. I was talking to a buddy of mine who lives in Fremont, he said it's supposed to get into the 100's this week. Hot hot hot. Not as hot as the central valley, but still pretty hot. They manage to stay cool by opening the house up early and getting it cool, then closing it up and keeping the sun out as much as possible. The rear of the house faces southeast, and to the south they have a big fruitless mulberry that give a lot of shade. So even tho it's uncomfortable in the house betwee, 3 and 6, it cools down right nice after that.

However.

Living in Kansas City has taught me to appreicate a good AC system. It got up to 95, heat index of about 105, and I dont' know what that makes the humidity, but it was like walking into a wall going out side. Right now, 23:30 CDT, it's still 81 degrees. . . too hot for me. Damn right I like AC!

I've had five cars since my wife and i got together. The first two had no AC, that sucked. Going down the highway at 70 with the windows down makes you deaf. . . the last three have had AC, and we've used it a lot. I can't imagine driving around when it's so hot and humid with no AC. Needless to say, we drank a lot in the car (soda/water/tea) during the summer.

I couldn't imagine living here without AC. Come next month the Temp. and Humidity start getting in a race to see who can hit 100 first. But then again it can get down to about -10 in the winter so it all balances out. Oh the beauty of Ohio weather.
