Air Conditioning

I am one of very few people in Canada who has no appreciation for AC. My girlfriend is installing one in our bedroom as I type this. I am not helping because I don't want it.
is it? is it really sys?

Or is it because you are incredibly lazy? ;)

Architect eh?

Looks like those of us that are too poor to afford our own architects will still continue to need A/C.

:)

I would expect that the guy who built the house you're living in DID hire an architect, no? ;)

Or do it like me and find a girlfriend who's an architect

The problem here is that it is very cold in the winter (as low as -40 F/C) so houses are designed to stay warm and use passive solar heating to lower heating bills. Good in the winter but when it is July and it is 100 F (44 C ?) with tropical humidity, AC is a must.

don't you think that you lose way more energy (and thus have highter bills) that way, than if you isolated your house properly so the warmth stays in in winter and out in summer?

As I sit in my friend's home in Dallas, Texas, relaxing after a day of 90+ degree heat, I can safely say, sysyphus, you are nuts.

The climate here is extreme in both directions. Winter here is colder than Moscow (and five months long). 10% (approximately) of the state GDP is spent on winter heating, much less is spent on AC; I think the strategy is to concentrate on keeping buildings warm. I am skeptical of any building design that claims to provide comfort without AC when it is 100F with 95% humidity.

I am not a professional so I may be wrong, I know nothing about archetectual theory. Nevertheless, when my apartment turns into an Amazonian vacation I want AC.

:mischief: shhhhhh! She reads this sometimes you know!!!!

A/C is the greatest invention in the history of mankind. Name one person in history who accomplished anything without the benefits of air conditioning!

I'm sorry, but the correct answer is Balzac ;)

I went out to buy a fan today, and I noticed that there is a mad rush everywhere in NYC today to buy air conditioners.

I wouldn't be surprised if a brownout is on the horizon.

In my small Alabama coastal town, A/C is pretty vital IF you're inside. If your outside the breeze from the Gulf of Mexico will cool you off unless you're in a thickly wooded area, like a golf course or the streets where most the locals live. But when your inside, the sun will really heat up your house, especially if you have large windows on all sides of the house.

I hereby declare a state of war upon air conditioners worldwide, due to the massive amount of electricity used, causing 3 10 minute long backouts today. All air conditioners are to be destroyed by those loyal! Except for mine.

OK, I admit it, I was arguing more from the position of someone who lives in a moderate climate. My "strategy" propably doesn't work in less balanced climates such as yours :)
