All Leader Catastrophe 1 - Stalin

@Gwynnja

S2E leaves fish+crab+fur spot for second city, which with borrowed corn could be excellent GPfarm, but no way I want my capital there.

Haha, one thing I've learned on the forum is follow Dave McW's axioms, in this case SIP until you can beat monarch. Doesn't 2e 1s sacrifice both seafood resources? Edit: never mind, not both, but it does sacrifice the fish

His revised suggestion was EEES, which sacrifices neither, and gets both grains. It is a good start for sure, and the seafood capital could be your second city instead of your first. Especially nice because we dont' start with fishing.

Not to laugh at your misfortune, but after the complaint that there are too many water tiles in the BFC, seeing you settle N for three more ocean tiles made me

You're not laughing at my misfortune, you're laughing at my mistakes. I gotta say, I laughed myself. :D

LeftAdjoint, what you're saying makes sense to me. In the absence of compelling arguments to the contrary, I'll probably go with it. Turn will be played tonight PST.

What the!!!!!!

Facepalm cap settle ><

Oh well. 3e1s would've been nice, leaving the seafood spot for a much later city. GP farms don't need much infrastructure and nobody would have stolen the spot from you.

SIP was fine, probably strongest play IMO. Capitol would have been plenty fine for early production and a strong spec and/or draft site too if you needed that.

Since you already committed 1N, might as well get the fur hooked up early and use the commerce. Worker 1st, AG, improve corn, then fur.

if you turn on the grid you won't make mistakes like thinking you need to move 1n to get the crab. Also turn on the option that shows the BFC when you click on a settler.

Oh yeah. CTRL-T if you're curious. I used it for a very long time. (until I learned to see the grid in my head anyway) I also make heavy use of ALT-X to evaluate possible city sites.

You can also use city dotmap tool included in BUG mod, it's awesome.

I was under the impression that some of the strategic layer stuff existed in the unmodded game. (but maybe I've just spent too long with BUG :p)

An under par start with lots of water tiles. SIP probably won't hurt considering the difficulty level.

Cue horrified reaction to post #9 in 3... 2... 1...

Okay, since most of the discussion was still on cap placement (I know, guys, I know :crazyeye: ) I'm going to go with LeftAdjoint's Ag > BW plan. I'll try not to screw things up too badly...when I loaded the save, I heard a cough from Stalin that sounded suspiciously like "gulag". Why couldn't it have been Catherine?

On turn 5, we run into our closest neighbor. At least, I assume he's our closest neighbor...

Since you can clearly see my borders as well as his in that screenshot. Pacal's one of my favorite early rush targets, this is the closest I've ever seen him, and he has gold. Stalin's promised me a pardon if I take him out, so this is a done deal.

A couple turns later, another rival shows up.

And it's Mr. REX himself. This is the point where I start hating myself (instead of mostly laughing) for that move north - an extra plains hill would be nice for all the units I'll no doubt want to churn out.

On turn 9, Christianity is founded - Choose Religions is on, remember. Calm down. Judaism comes on turn 10, via Pacal.

On turn 10, things are just getting silly:

Two tasty targets, followed immediately by a brick wall. I actually successfully rushed him in an offline game earlier today, but only thanks to a stack of about 15 horse archers made possible by hut luck. Huts are off.

Oh, for the love of the Party.

I'll just let that one speak for itself.

All right, it's Turn 21. Bronze working finished, and I'm in revolution to Slavery. The only copper could be in a better spot:

You can't really tell from that screenshot, but it's right on Izzy's borders:

Our capital's poorly placed:

And we've met a collection of the game's most annoying AI. My guess at a path is Fishing (it'll finish about when that Warrior does, if I set things up right) followed by maybe The Wheel to hook up the copper, with a settler maybe even chopped/whipped before a work boat to get that copper running ASAP. Fast, mass axes to end Pacal's misery and then Izzy's posthaste (or perhaps the other way around, given our copper's placement), followed by doing my level best to out-expand Mr. REX and subsequently take him out with catapults.

Any refinements or alternate suggestions?

I'd get a second worker now. Nothing really urgent about that warrior, and you're already working an unimproved tile, so no point growing on to more.

I would chop out the worker and two workboats, grow rapidly to 6 population (try to time the growth so that you're never working unimproved tiles, building workers/settlers if you have nothing good to grow on) and start hammering/chopping settlers. Get enough workers of course, get your road network out, and grow on warriors. Warriors are good enough for barbarians on Prince.

Expand east first to block off land from Pacal—and get the juicy riverside—then swing south to get the sheep and whatever seafood goodies might lie off the western coast.

It might not be possible, but ideally you want every single good tile between you and Pacal. Get to it!

You start a forum game with the goal to grab far away copper, and axe rush Monarch AIs to improve your game. No comment ~~

You will lose the copper as soon as her radius hits 3 from her religion.
Research AH and IW to come up with other options.
If, you have a Horse resourse, that will help vs some of them, but, you Really Need Iron.
Chariots won't do well vs Mayan Holkans.

I too preferred the SIP option.
I don't like to give up freshwater access for my capitol, nor gain Ocean tiles.

You're going to grab copper that's 10 tiles away from your capital for an axe rush? Oy. You know that requires about 25 worker turns of roading right?

You don't like having Izzy for a neighbor? She's the best possible combination of manipulable zealot who doesn't build big armies. Free shrines!
