Altova XML ?? is that good ??

I've used XMLspy for several years at work. It's a really nice editor (it also costs a few hundred bucks); I've never tried the free version so I don't know how much functionality it supports.

Plain notepad works, but XMLSpy highlights your XML tags, which makes it easier to read, and it automatically completes tags that you open (saving you typing time). Also, if you save an XML with a hanging tag, it will warn you that your XML is invalid, thus preventing the frustration of trying to load your mod and suffering repeated crashes while you try and figure out which file went bad.

I've been using the free version to edit my mod files, and it works great.

I use Notepad++, which is a free download and provides some syntax highlighting. It's much nicer than standard Notepad, but not as fully-fledged as a dedicated XML editor.

If you have a schema (.xsd) file xmlspy will also provide all of the legal new tags for your current cursor position when you type the opening bracket.

Long story short: it's good, but 100% necessary for XML editing. I have the hard drive space, so I don't mind.

I made my whole mod with notepad and paint :p

(res Gamefont files just with paint was real fun)

Even the buttons with MIP maps? How? I can't figure out how to do squat with Photoshop...every time I try to edit something and resave it, I get the pink block in-game.

XMLSpy is actually what we use at Firaxis for Civ 4. :) Personally, I'm a pretty big fan of it.
