Am I mad?

LOL @ sealman! I didn't even catch poodles...and I'm wondering what in the heck, too?! :D

I play the same kind of game, though...PTW with 1,000 turns on Marla Singers (sp?) massive Earth map, 24 civs, conquest only victory condition. This game is going on forever!

Sometimes I just play a turn per night because of how long each turn lasts. My wife asked me the other day if I was going to play another game if/when I should ever finish this current game...of course, the look in my eye said it all...she calls herself a Civ-widow, but I'm not playing it that much!

Mad? No...crazy perhaps, but definitely not mad! :)

I already had a game that was kind of this. 256x256 map, against 30 civs. Modern times came, and it was only 5 minutes per turn. When the tragedy happened. Rome declares war on France. The next turn, all civs except me and a couple of other were fighting. The next turn had duration of 45 minutes, and I deleted the game! Now I play on large maps.

I, too, was addicted to huge maps. I think it was a desire to "get my money's worth" out of the game. A while back I stepped down to large and to my amazement, the game was still fun. I've downsized again to standard and still enjoy the game. Hard to believe, I know. The game has a slightly different "feel" on a standard map, but I think it's actually more enjoyable. I know it's nice to get 2 or 3 games finished in the time it used to take to play one.
With me, it's not poodles, it's cats. They've taught me not to neglect them, though. If I do, they jump up and walk on the keyboard.

I think that huge maps would be great if the AI was good: an epic battle that is hotly contested all the way through. I guess I can see how people who find Regent challenging would find it lots of fun.

But personally, I don't find them that interesting. You can play against 23 opponents, but as soon as you've conquered two or three, you're probably going to be twice as big as the next one, so conquering the world is an inevitability, although it takes a LONG time to do.

Large is the biggest I play, although people should note that the time it takes is more proportional to the number of land tiles than the world size - normal with 60% water takes longer than large with 80%

Because I LIKE taking over the world!

I threw the poodles in as a random mention. If you didn't get it, then you're not truly *mad*. If you did get it, please explain it to us quasisane people.

What's the point of playing a game you know you're going to win? Two things:
1) Maybe we're not trying to beat the game, but our high score. From that perspective, victory is not assured.
2) There's something primal and satisfying about putting 20+ hours into world development and then nuking the blazes out of it. Just imagine how much fun it would have been to burn down Noah's Ark or the Tower of Babel.

Welcome to CFC, where we're all a little mad (about civIII). :crazyeye:

What is "mad"? People could call you mad if they think that your behavior is not normal (or whatever mad is), but maybe they're just stupid. Maybe they cant see what you see, or cant find enjoyment where you find enjoyment, but could they just be blinded by their ignorance? if you like playing huge maps, then maybe thats more fun than any smaller size map. But it varies depending on the person. People who dont like the size map that u like can call you mad, but u can call them mad because to you their mind is a mystery.

I would do that but the thought of waiting x minutes for a turn to go round would actually make me want to switch my TV on for the first time in months.

But that's the fun. In some large games I somtimes read a book, or tidy the room just waiting for a turn to go round :)

Yeah, but I feel like doing the same thing :crazyeye: but only on a level where I will be challenged, anyway, back to the plums

Mad!!! Do you think that I am mad!

Let's all take a moment to appreciate national Jump-Roping Sheep Day.

I still prefer a huge world... I like the room to develop a big civilization. Even though at the end it takes 45 min to an hour per turn, I have to admit that 45 minutes of that hour is me making decisions about my people and units. It takes the comp 15 minutes to plot 30 civs, takes me 45 to plot one... :)
But if not in a war -- and having to watch what they do -- I can get all my chores done between turns.... ;)

Welcome PredFan,
Repeat after me, "I'm PredFan and I'm a Civaholic........."
(stolen from someone else). Don't let reality and life get in the way of a good game. My wife and kids have come to realize that unless they have a new tech or control a good lux or strategic resource they should not bother daddy while he pecks at the keyboard like a rat on crack.

No you're not mad.
Madness is....
Playing deity on pangea with barbs set to raging.
Staring at a blank screen for 5 minutes whilst trying to think of something to write that is witty or at least half intelligent to people that you've never met, dont even know what their real name is, so that they will reply to your well thought out and insightful comment in a vain attempt to justify the fact that you've just spent the last 3 hours doing squat when the house aint clean and you're hungry but could'nt give a rats a*** cause someone somewhere will respond to your clever little post and in doing so, will remove that cold lonely barrier that is cyberspace and it will be replaced with the warmth and understanding and all accepting love that is the CFC forums.

Nope I dont think you're mad,...... just one of us
