Hello...I am a new teacher and will begin teaching next week. What I am looking to do in my US History class is to gauge what my incoming freshman students remembered/learned from 8th grade history. They are starting on the American Revolution so before I just jumped into it, I wanted to prepare just a fun, non graded, US history review quiz, just to see what they know. Basically, all information prior to the Revolutionary War (impact of Columbus, European settlement, Native American Resistance, slavery, etc.). My question is, does anyone know of a place how to generate such a quiz or if one has already been done here? I remember doing one in high school and it was relatively painless, just figured I'd bounce some ideas off of you guys! Thanks!

Hell, ask 'em basic geography questions (either today or historical if you're looking to gague pre-independence knowledge) and see if they know anything.

First question, ask them: "What tactics did the surviving colonists use to retaliate in the aftermath of the Jamestown Massacre of 1622, which were so successful that Chief Opechancanough decided in desperation to negotiate with the colonists?"

-See, you've got to instill that kind of fear, intimidation and respect early - otherwise they may think they can slack off in this class... a train of thought that can be very difficult to ever fully reverse...
