Why are the americans a tribe in this game ? 4000 BC ?

I don't get it.

Probably for the same reason it was in the first two games.

They are a super power now and a large percentage of the games sales will be in America...They round off the game quite nicely with a late UU and I have no problems with them being in the game.

Oy, here we go again. Pick an answer

A: All the previous Civ games had the Americans as a function.

B: While not a significant influence on history in the ancient past, they are a VERY significant influence in the modern day. You'll note the timeline heads past the modern day too?

C: Civ3, while based on certain historical trends, is NOT a game of recreating history exactly.

D: Many of the customers are American and this gives them something familiar to attach to?

E: All of the above?

F: Insert own answer here.

ah...I see...still don't make it right for me though...guess I'll just have to live with it...perhaps they should add the soviets and the EU as well...

I was about to say roughly the same thing. There is a difference between Soviets and Russians, although I think that in Civ 3 World, the terms probably are the same.

i would agree that in the real world differences exist. But this is game related, and I dont see the difference. IMO, a civ needs to have major cities that were not inherited from another older civ.

In game play and reality, most American cities were never English, so you cant say that America and England should be the same civ. (just a preemptive strike against the idiots who will soon flood this thread saying America and England are the same). Secondly, the argument that America wasnt around in 400bc is lame. Very few of the game civs were around in 4000bc, therefore singling out America is nothing but America-bashing, and its in poor taste for a game forum. So go burn a flag like a good little terrorist.

Because they are :) The issue, irrelevent or interesting as it may be, has been beaten to death in previous threads - such as those that contributed to the demise of the 'Civilizations' forum. Please don't let this turn into a nasty little flame war like all the others...Big Bad Moderator is watching you :scan:

Yes that's strange, but it's also strange to see the Roman and Egyptian civilizations start next to each other when the Egyptians were an empire for at least a thousand years before Rome was anything more than a fishing village.

The game has some ancient, some medieval and some modern day powers all thrown in together. Historical parallels are irrelevant and if you don't like it, change the civ's name in the editor.

there were no civilization in 4000BC.
Americans aren't english as the romans weren't greeks(romans being a mix of italic people, etruscans, later greek settlers in southern italy n then celts n many other people)all taking the culture n language of the latins-there were black emperors-maybe there was the same identity problem 2000 years ago ;)
It'd be a mistake to forget the achievments of the past 200 years.
We don't realise it but it's awesome what we've done.I think the past 200 years were the most important in history.all the ideoligies;the fact that in western countries 99% of the people can read n write. We r able to destroy every form of life on earth n remember that the americans stepped on the moon. Why shouldn't the young civs be in civ3.Age isn't important.Look at the aborigenes.they stayed for 20,000 years hunter-gathers.the achievments a civilization made are important.Btw,i don't think the iroquois n zulu should be in civ3,neither amazones or tribes like that(they are tribes, not civs).Culture is different from civilization.

Civ3 is meant to be a collage of the most influential countries/empires in history. America certainly fits in since it's the most influential country of OUR era, just as the British, Romans, Chinese, etc. were great powers of influence in their heydays.

The answer, of course, is simple: so we can see Abe Lincoln in a little fur hat.

I seem to remember ruler titles in earlier games being influenced by current government type; too bad they now have a flat per-civ title. "Emperor Lincoln" had an excellent ring to it.

I must make a point to people who talk of America as a prodomently English people. It was only by 2 vote that English was picked as the national language. Of course German, and French were the runners up, and I think there was one vote for Italian.
PS player2- I think the Chinese are still a great power in our time ;)

I believe it was 1 vote that made the difference.

Of course,it be hard for ordinary American gamers to play civs they have never heard about, I mean who knows where the INdians started or where the Chinese have their capital:rolleyes:

Was it one vote? And actually I rather like playing as the Chinese. I respect the fact that they have always seemed to be on a whole other page from the rest of the world. Doing things their own way. Oh yea isn't India's capital New Delhi?
