A lot of people wanted to know what "Free" harbors meant as Phoenician Heritage, like if it means immediately or after harbors are unlocked, and if it means maintenance free as well as hammer free. And the answer to both is yes. You get them turn 1, and they're maintenance free. They actually read "Harbor (FREE)" so it's pretty apparent.

Just thought I'd point that out for those who don't have the game yet since I haven't seen it brought up anywhere else (could have missed it though; only been up for an hour since launch).

Thank you for clearing that up :)

Sounds even more overpowered than expected :) I always choose random civs but as a huge naval tard it looks tempting indeed.

Going to love them on Archipelago maps! Love maritime civs. Can't wait until Friday!

I've noticed one kind of unfortunate thing - namely, the harbours don't appear in the city on the map. Not a HUGE deal, but I wonder why this is? Coastal cities look better with harbours coming out of them.

I dearly love Archipelago maps. It's nice to have another civ that will be strong on them. I felt that, before G&K, Polynesia was best followed by the Ottomans and maybe England. Free harbors from Turn 1 and Trade Routes on discovering the Wheel? Yes!

Thanks, Lyoncet. I was trying to decide which of the new civs to play first and your post made Carthage a slam dunk.

Somewhat related: the same applies to the new Tradition finisher, you get a maintenance-free Aqueduct in your first four cities even if you haven't researched Engineering yet.

After trying them out for about 100 turns, I can say this: holy man that's powerful. As MadDjinn pointed out you still need wheel for trade routes, but I don't even care. On Small Continents (quickly becoming my favorite script) I rolled a map with 2 pearls in the second ring and 2 nearby city sites with 3 fish and another pearls each. I grabbed an early shrine, Stonehenge, and quickly got the pantheon that gives you +1 hammer per sea resource and when I got a religion I took another hammer bonus. Absurd. Abusive. Had to go to work, but I'll be cranking out a ton of elephants on the extra hammers alone, and even more Quinquerimes with the harbor bonus.

I tried rolling one more map and had fewer sea resources, but still a lot of them. I'm wondering if along with a coastal bias, Carthage has a sea resource bias. Would make sense. Also makes me think an early shrine will be instrumental in helping you achieve that extra hammer per tile. Getting 5(?):c5food: 2:c5production: and 2(?):c5gold: with just a boat an a lighthouse that early is so bonkers it's unreal.

Rediculous. Carthage + Netherlands were my favourite in Civ4, now they're going to be my favourite in Civ5; woo woo

Lyoncet: I don't know. I killed a Carthage opponent in my game, and she had no sea resources for her capital.

Just started a game with Carthage; King, Archipelago Map, Standard.

I have one lonely Fish in my second ring. I don't feel bad though. In the first three rings I have 2 Gems, 2 Sheep, 1 Cotton, and 1 Cow. The other end of my small island has another Gem, 1 Fur, 1 Stone and the Grand Mesa.
