An icon that isn't anti-communication?

So, is there any way to get an icon that isn't a bad, unreadable mess like the icon I used for this thread?

Because, honestly, the icon in this thread is something I'd consider almost completely non-functional at actually distinguishing Civ 5 content from non-Civ 5 content. In order to understand what it means, you need to have already read enough of the board to "get" the in-joke (hey look, you can talk about Civ IV and CIv V using the same letters!. It is cute and in-jokey, but not actually good at helping communicate actual information, because it is very ambiguous and easy to read wrong.

Is there any chance at adding a second icon that, well, isn't ridiculously ambiguous and actually useful for communicating to readers who aren't already well versed in the in-joke? Even leave the current jokey one around. Just provide one that is actually functional?

I guess I can do without any such icon. Seems a pity.

It was voted on by anyone that wanted to vote. And that icon was the clear and away winner.

Come off it, there was about 5% in it.

Also, if popularity was the important part of an icon then I don't see why we don't just go the whole way and get one of Brittany Spears or something. Popularity matters, yo!

The purpose of the icons is to make the forums easier to use by making threads easy to distinguish.

The icon fails at its only purpose.

All the vote proves is that the majority of people don't know what the hell they're doing when it comes to interface design.

Be that as it may, in the final round there was only one icon that had a "5" in it and only four or five that played on the CIVV letters. If one can't tell the difference between:
[civ1], [civ4] and [civ5] perhaps they need glasses.

[civ4] is clearly a different font, all same sized letters and Yellow-White-White vs
[civ5] varied sized letters: CiV and White-White-Yellow.

I imagine Civ6 will wind up along the lines of:
CVI or
CVI

Although I agree that the current icon isn't very effective, I seriously doubt that the admins even pay attention to threads like these. They'll probably dismiss it as "some guy complaining over nothing" and let it die.

BTW, I voted for the "Civ5" icon. Apparently, the nerd's vote only counts as 3/5 of a person. :shake:

And it quite clearly represents the majority of people on this site.

I'm starting to see a connection here!

If you think those two icons are significantly different at a glance then you are insane.

A different font? The graphics are literally a couple of pixels different. And one letter is a different colour - yellow and white!

You glance at one of the icons and you have to think "errrrrmm right, civ 5"

The whole point of icons is so you can EASILY tell the difference between two things. Having them look almost identical except for an absolutely microscopic difference in font height and a single character being yellow or white is not a clear difference.

Yellow and white. Seriously. I defy you to find any two other colours that are this similar.

The graphic fails at being a distinctive icon.

This again huh? Since its at the top of the queue right now, here's my thoughts:

This [civ5] icon won. It won with about a 2% margin over the icon with a 5 in it. It was about 20 votes ahead the whole way.

Sure, [civ5] could be confusing if a newcomer to the site saw it in your post. But how many people is that? Three? Four? That's just not enough for the moderators to worry about. Besides, most newcomers probably come looking for information about Civilization 5.

I've used the [civ4] icon in the past but now because it's easier to (as I'm sure most people do) I just type Civ4 & Civ5. That said I can guarantee that nobody who is looking at this thread is confused about what [civ5] means.

The moderators are obviously trying to sweep this partisan nightmare under the rug and move on and we should let them.

Looking at the two icons side by side, they're NOT clearly differentiated. I'd suggest putting a dot above the i in the Civ5 icon. That would at least make it easier to see at a glance.

I clicked on this post thinking it was about Civ4.

If my icon had won this sooo wouldn't be a problem. I demand a recount. ;)

I was going to say something about the icons, but I didn't even know that they had any meaning. I thought you just put that there for decoration.

Isn't this why we have a section of the forum devoted to Civ4 and a separate section devoted to Civ5? That seems like enough distinction enough for me

I am sorry that your choice was not selected and I know you are disappointed. Life goes on and you will survive.

Moderator Action: If you have accusations to make about how the selection took place, I suggest that you take it up with ainwood via pm and not use snarky posts in the forum.

And it quite clearly represents the majority of people on this site.

Wrong.

It clearly represents the majority of voters on this site.

Huge distinction.

Anyway, I agree with the OP, the icon looks nice, but I can't tell it apart from the other icon without glasses. Next time, I think there should be a screening where some icons are disqualified for looking too similar to existing ones.

"X lost the election by only a small amount, therefore X should be declared the winner!"

Herp de derp :crazyeye:  :crazyeye:

If you read, you'll see that the argument here is that the winner of the vote fails at being a distinctive icon for the game.

I don't think anyone cares which icon gets used, as long as the selected icon doesn't suck at its only task.
