An SG for those who have never played an SG before

Got it. I'll be playing tomorrow night.

Somehow I never had that (needed more text) happen to me. I don't write that much, do I? :D

Preturn: Everything looks good. Going to declare war on the Romans next turn.

Turn 1: 1255 AD
Declared War on Romans.

View attachment 119695

Didn’t see this coming, the galleys by our home continent can’t cross to Rome. This will make it harder and slow us down some turns. We lost our route to get to the Spanish continent too. Going to send my galleys to Ravenna since it’s the least guarded and has one of the two roman irons.

Turn 5: 1275 AD
Ravenna captured.

Turn 8: 1290 AD
Liberalism discovered.
Astronomy discovered.
Researching Gunpowder.

Upgraded the 3 galleys by the home continents to galleons.

Turn 10: 1300 AD
A stack has landed by Rome. A stack is right next to Pisae too.

Afterturn comments:

Next person should be able to take Pisae within one or two turns. The catapults from there would help whittle down the culture defense of Rome. Might want to pillage the iron source next to Pisae. I think with that pillaged Rome wouldn’t have any iron.

Our economy is looking bad. We are losing money at 40%. We need courthouses in the Spanish cities.

BAH!! economy what's that?? MORE UNITS FOR WAR!!! Money isn't going to win us the game!! Screw economy!! WWWWAAAARRRRR

Courthouses are the best units you can build en route to domination. :)

Anyway, since Rem is out indefinitely according to a post in another thread, this is my got it post. If I'm feeling frisky I may play tonight.

Pre-flight check: MM for a bunch of merchants to improve the economy, we're running positive @40% sci now  I'm all for war, but you can't completely neglect your economy. There are some real :smoke: builds going on here, rax in cities with no production, theatres before courthouses in areas where we're losing 10+ gpt in maintenance when we can run Artists for border pops. Capturing the Romans is going to bankrupt us before we reach domination, and Lizzies going to have Redcoats before we think about getting over there. Before sending all of our army to Rome (the right call, don't get me wrong) we should have been sending all of our workers to Spain to chop in courthouses and the FP, in addition to missionaries to spread Confusionism, which would have taken care of the culture problem while also adding much needed coin to our coffers.

Also, why are our bombarding cats non-accuracy promoted? :smoke: More importantly, why are they bombarding with no promotions at all? :smoke: I don't mean to overcriticize, but WTH happened to this game?

I don't think I can both fight the war with Rome and salvage our economy, and I have no choice but to press on Rome, so here's hoping I'm not disbanding units in 10 turns. I hit enter.

IBT - We kill a cat outside Pisae and lose a Camel Archer outside Rome. That stack outside Rome is going to take a while to take the city. One cat.

1305 AD - Pisae falls without incident.

siegepisae.jpg

IBT - If the AI were worth anything they'd have retaken Pisae, but we luck out and they don't. We do lose a mace.

1320 AD - The RNG is friendly to us, and we sack Rome without losing any units, including a Camel Archer defeating a City Garrison III Longbow without taking any damage  Hey, I'll take it.

romeisours.jpg

How about two Roman Capitals in one turn? The Roman Capital is moved to Cumae after the sack of Rome, and this happens:

howboutcumae.jpg

IBT - Rome puts together a decent assault force at Cumae, very nearly lose it as I only was able to move two units in. Probably should have waited for reinforcements, but I think we're ok now.

1325 AD - I think Rome is toast now, just a matter of how long the shuffling really takes. I've now got a semi-decent workforce over to former Spain to start chopping courthouses to salvage the economy. Vicki switched to Mercantalism. Send Alex fishies for 6 gpt, mo' money.

1335 AD - Greeks take Gao from Mansa. Mansa will probably be easy pickings as a next target after Alex is done softening him up. Shuffling troops, Antium should fall next turn if all goes well.

1340 AD - Gunpowder in, start Banking. I suspect Vicki will beat us to the free merchant at econ, but Banks will help with our economy anyway. When it comes in, if the free Merchant is still avail, I'd grab that. Otherwise, I'd head toward Chemistry, Grenadiers will probably be enough to take out Mansa for the win. Have some terrible RNG luck @ Antium, it'll have to fall next turn.

1345 AD - The Heroic Epic is done in Beijing. I'm not sure if it was the right choice, its not the production city it once was, but it needed to be built somewhere. And the third Roman Capital of my turnset falls.

antiumours.jpg

Trade Vicki Philo for Banking and all her gold. Set research to Econ in 10 at a defecit. WW has reared its ugly head, we're up to 4 unhappies from it. While Rome is spent, still probably 10 turns or so from its total capture.

Units now in position to take Antium and unnamed Roman City in 2 turns. I also have a CA outside a city they dropped on the Spanish continent, it may or may not be enough to take it, but theres a mace on the coast that I have a Galleon swinging around to pick up that can be there in 2-3 turns. May be best just to wait til its there to reinforce to leave no doubt.

I've moved a bunch of workers to Spain, I'd chop the hell out of it (Don't worry about longterm, we're not looking for space here.) Courthouse finishes in Barca next turn, I'd immediately chop out the FP. We just need enough research juice for another 2-3 techs really, Chemistry then an upgrade spree then take out Mali with Grenadiers. That plus a few settlers plopped on our 3 continents should suffice to give us Domination. We're currently just shy of 40% of land with Rome and Antium still in revolt. Make sure they have as many artists as possible hired to pop borders, then put them all to work after that. Keep an eye on econ, if we lose the chance to get the great merchant, switch to Chem. I'd start a GA with the merchant when he comes, but sending him to London or Athens for a trade route isn't a bad idea either. Don't neglect getting some settlers to fill in the gaps on the 3 continents. Every green tile there is one less tile we have to grab in Mali. Hell, might also be worth sending a few settlers over to the unoccupied islands, we might be able to hit dom without another war.

Theres a bunch of galleons outside Beijing, and a full Galleon outside Rome. The galleys outside Spain may be worthless, might just be easier to build new ones on the mainland than upgrade those to Galleons given our economic realities.

Anyway, here's the save:

YES MORE WWAAARRR!!! Wait what was that gaspar, economy you say BAH!! what's that, oh you mean WAR okay i understand :D :ar15:

(got it post)

I'm back. Nice :hammer: job you guys did on Spain and Rome.

Pre Turn: everything looks good.

Turn 1: So I saw the camel archer near the Roman city of….. I forgot (it’s the one on the Spanish continent) but anyway I promoted him two twice and attacked and….lost. Now I have to get my promoted mace man over there to raze the city, that sucks. I also had a galley pick up 2 longbows and a spear and left woody woods worth alone to protect Beijing. I highly doubt anything will be attacking us at this point.

Turn 2: We finally take Neapolis and moved in all of our troops to garrison.

Wealthiest_Civilizations.JPG

Apparently we're very wealthy :D

Turn 3: I’ve landed some troops next to the roman city on the Spanish continent and will take it next turn. And I took care of some pesky pillager with a camel archer. Good things we had those camel archers. Fast units are always good for taking out pillagers.

Turn 4: The Spanish Continent has been freed of Romans!! National Holiday!!

A_free_Spanish_Continent.JPG

Turn 5: Antium has been taken!!

The_taking_of_Rome.JPG

Turn 6: I take a look at the Roman city of Setia and to my amazement find a pretty decent naval base and two workers defended by four units. I decide to wait for reinforcements. And we had a load of boarder expansions on the roman continent along with a few on the Spanish continent YAY!!

A_look_at_Setia.JPG

Turn 7: Economics was discovered this turn and we received a free merchant at our capital. I have no idea what to do with him but I realized that we also have a great engineer as well. I had a hard time figuring out what to research next. We could go for divine right for the Versailles on the Roman continent to lower costs or we could go for printing press to maximize the effectiveness of our towns and villages. I decide to go for the wonder but leave the engineer in our main continent. And Circei was taken with ease. Three more cities to go!!!

Turn 8: SETIA WAS RAZED!! Two more cities left and one of them will be taken next turn. I changed my mind about the great engineer and start moving him to the Roman continent.

Turn 9: Bulgar was captured after a brutal battle. We lost two catapults and a tier two mace man but we took the city :D

Turn 10: T. Raccoon destroyer of the Romans lol. As my last act as ruler I abolish everything that is Roman. :D

The_Roman_civilization_has_been_destroyed.JPG

Domestically, all I’ve been doing is building courthouses in the Spanish continent and Barcelona is getting a forge online and is surrounded by forests and is also the best spot to put the forbidden palace in. I already started chopping some forests for the palace so as soon as the forge is finished switch to Forbidden palace. We have a merchant and a artist in our Capital so I suggest we discuss what we’re going to do with them. The great engineer is waiting in Rome and I suggest we build the Versailles in Cumae.

I'd suggest a Golden Age -- but I don't think we really need it at this point.

I'm going to play my turns tomorrow afternoon, so feel free to make suggestions until then.

This is my got it post, too. :)

i was thinking golden age too but not during a war. Now that we have peace again i would wait for the cities to get out of rebellion or whatever and then get the golden age. We could always use them as super specialist but i dont know, golden age sounds better.

Golden Age isn't a bad idea, neither is throwing the merchant in a caravel and sending him off to England.

If you do decide to start a GA, wait til after you've used the Engineer to rush Versailles, because you can't pick which 2 GPs to use, and we want to make sure its the artist and the merchant if we do use them. Also make sure we wait til everything is out of revolt so we're getting the max benefit.

I'd take a little break to consolidate here, move militarily towards Grenadiers, and pump out settlers to make sure we're covering our 3 continents. Particularly I'd plop one on the NW corner of the Roman continent, and one of the SE corner of the Spanish continent. We could also get 3 cities on that big island in the far eastern ocean, and one by the fishes on the small island just off the coast of former Spain. Then a city on the one tile island that picks up two fishes in the NW ocean, and one that grabs crab and horses just to the NW of that. I'd also plop one on that last hill tile south of Basra, and have Anjar just build culture til its borders pop again. That should handle our continent.

Going to need to hire artists in Circae, Bulgar, Arretium, Neapolis and Arpinum to get border pops. My guess is everything I just mentioned, especially the Roman border pops will be enough for domination. If settlers bore, I'd still do all the border stuff, but just get some boats and send the galleons off to Mali.

lets calm down a little before we start sending anything toward mali. I think the next couple people up should concentrate a little more on domestic issues. once we have everything that is needed i.e. workers, settlers, troops, galleons, defense.... then we can start thinking about sending troops over to take mali.

In particular, the economy looks like its bleeding all over the place (last screenshot 50% sci 10% culture -79GPT). Would be great to throw up some economy buildings after all the courts are up.

The FP and Versailles are the two most important buildings. And yet again, chop every forest you can in the new holdings to get courts up. More workers! Forget health in the new cities, we're not in this for the long run.
