An SG for those who have never played an SG before

I'm with Silver. I agree with almost all his micro stuff (I'd probably drop the merchant either as a specialist in beijing (likely to be the eventual Wall Street city due to shrine) or send him to Rome to fund our coming overexpansion.) While I agree the game needs a lil spice, nothing says spice like a well planned sledgehammer, and that starts with a strong home economy. Remember we're not financial and we have crap lands, this tech lead isn't going to hold up if we just fart around while Vicky cottages her ass off. Ideally 12-ish cats and 8-ish maces and we could probably take all of Spain within 2 turnsets. By that time we have Caravels, circumnav and contact with the other Civs so we can figure our who our next target is.

I'm all for lots of war long term. I think we'll probably aim for a domination win which should make for interesting reading. This is mostly boring atm because we're doing 10 turn infra sets with lots of stoppage on an island alone. I think by the end it'll be pretty interesting. :)

right but 12 units is not enough. we need longbows, maces, and cattys, for our war efforts. we'll need replacement cattys, longbows to defend our cities and maces to replace the ones we lost, and we have to transport them all across the seas with galleys that have two movment points and can only sail on coastal tiles, our logistics will be horrible. When our invasion force arrives we can have 5 maces take one of Izzy's cities d-day style and then move in 7 longbows to defend it. We can wait it out and then ask for peace. Then we can move in our entire army in unopposed to take her out in one huge strike.

Well... if you put it that way, then we're better off not even going to war right now to begin with. It will be impossible to logistically support our troops without one huge drop, since, as you said, it will take forever to ship troops there. If we nab optics and get circumvent, we are in a slightly better position, but still...

The kind of invasion force you're looking at would either needs huge loads of Galleys (which would likely cripple our fragile economy) or Galleons. It would also help if we were able to scout out Izzy's lands, as it's obvious that we're better off dropping where she can't hit us immediately.

Also, D-Day style would really suck. Don't attack the enemy from the boats. Land on a hill or in a forest and THEN attack.

the invasion force that im looking at would need only several galleys constantly transporting troops to the front and it would be best if those troops had a nice comfortable city they could stay at. We dont need one huge drop we just need 6 galleys too transport 12 units and then have them go back to transport some more until our entire army is on Izzy continent and then attack while our galleys go back and forth transporting replacements en masse. By the end we'll have a pretty big military and enough to go and take out Ceasar as well.

We are definitely better off with circumnavigation.

I said D-day style only because im afraid Izzy might throw her entire military at us and wipe out our invasion force. Killing off two defending troops will be easy with 5 maces i think but we could go with dropping them on a forest or something.

I'm back in, any updates, I don't have time to read all the turns, a quick update to what we're doing now would be awesome

No problem Rem...

Quick summary...

We've been building stuff... and building more stuff. Basically it's been a snoozer. Right now we're debating strategies for invading Izzy and laying the smackdown. No conclusion has been reached on that yet though.

Oh, and ntallyn is up.

EDIT: Anyone know what happened to ntallyn? Haven't seen him since he told me I was up.

T_Rac, we should be able to rush Optics in a turnset or two, that would make it possible to get Circumnav. We need that before any serious attempt at Izzy can be made (short of one big drop). Right now, we could do nice invasions of Rome, but we're trying to be their friends (although, seriously, we probably will end up killing them anyways, and Macemen will kill Praetorians).

Awesome, thanks Silver, I'm anxious to get back in it now :p

In that case you want to take up your set of turns now cause i haven't seen ntallyn in a while either. You can go if you would like otherwise we can wait for ntallyn. Ill PM him right now.

It depends if the SG wants to wait. I don't think ntallyn has made a post outside of this thread, so I don't know how else we would track him down. I can probably take turns tonight. Note "probably". I'll post around then if I can do them and ntallyn hasn't appeared yet.

Been busy at work, and never noticed that I hadn't been receiving updates on the SG in my email...

I'll get the turn played Friday night.

Here's the save. Primarily, I was preparing for war. More details to come in the morning, when I actually have a little time to write...

Sorry for the late report -- been fighting a laptop that doesn't want to boot at all, as well...

910 AD: Machinery finishes. Construction started.
Beijing Galley->Maceman
Silver's City Missionary->Maceman
Najran Barracks->Maceman
Basra Lighthouse->Barracks (mistake...realized this later)

920 AD: Khurasan Lighthouse->Barracks

930 AD: Kufah Granary->Barracks
Hinduism spreads to Khurasan

940 AD: Construction finishes. Optics started.
Mecca Courthouse->Catapult
Damascus Galley->Maceman
Baghdad Library->Catapult
Missionary fails to spread Confucianism in Antium. :(

950 AD: Beijing Maceman->Maceman

960 AD: Mecca Catapult->Catapult
Caesar completes Great Library

970 AD: Medina Forge->Barracks
Baghdad Catapult->Maceman
Najran Maceman->Maceman

980 AD: Mecca Catapult->Maceman
Basra Barracks->Hindu Temple (Basra needs culture so it can use more of its land)

990 AD: Optics discovered. Paper started.
Beijing Maceman->Maceman
Damascus Maceman->Maceman
Silver's City Maceman->Catapult

1000 AD: We have 5 million people! The 2nd best civ has only 2.7 million.

Throughout the turns, I've started transporting units over to Caesar's land for faster transport later to Izzy.

Are we ever going to settle near the silver in the south?

I may have missed 1 or 2 units "gotos". Sorry about that!

I got it. I'll spend my turns on a buildup probably, unless something drastic happens.

Anyone want to discuss some strategy we'll be taking towards completing this SG? That's what makes SGs so lively and fun! Discussion! (that, and I need time to break open my copy of GalCiv II :p).

i suggest you go for a lot of unit building in between buildings and stuff for our future use other then that just have fun with this SG. Hell, do something stupid if you'd like IDK just have fun we've practically won this already.

We really don't know what might be going on with Civs we haven't met yet, still could get interesting. We can go smack Izzy and see what happens next. When we get Astronomy things will begin to come into focus. We could make a drive to see how early we can get a domination win?

(0)1000AD: Preflight Check... Everything looks good... Although we may need to reprioritize...

(1)1005AD: Mecca makes more maces. Switch Basra over to the mine and start a granary... We need to get a Confuci missionary over here...

Revolt civics to Theocracy to save money and help out all those macemen we are pounding out...

I now notice that WE ALREADY HAVE OPTICS but not caravals! Switch Narjan over to one in 5 turns. We need circumnav!

I'm wondering why we have half a million roads around Basra when it's not even irrigrated yet... Roads everywhere is my style too, couldn't ditch it after Civ III, but please build other improvements first!

I make the merchant a super spec in Mecca. Extra food and gold is good. And that gold is even better thanks to Beauracracy.

(2)1010AD: Maces in Baghdad too. Big landing force needed. We'll take it to Izzy. Kufah is done with Rax, put up Aquaduct in anticipation of mass irrigration.

Lots of workers around...

(3)1015AD: Beijing starts ducts... Maxed health. Silvers City starts market. I'll chop rush it, since I was going to dispose of these forests anyways.

Moving more troops. We'll take a peek at what Izzy has, and maybe I'll land this turnset.

IBT: Saladman offers Pigs for Copper. Kind of a lop sided bargain. He has iron already though... so I don't see why not. He's our "ally" anyways right?

(4)1020AD: Paper comes in. I want to start guilds, but then I realise we don't have Feudalism! How can we build longbows without them. Sigh... Feud in 6.

Mecca will deviate for a Confuci Missionary for Basra... Damascus starts a crossbow. They'll have to stand in for the longbows. Basra Granary done. Start a harbour. I change tiles back to maximize food and choke on a disgustingly long build time. Hopefully it will fix itself.

Moving more troops. Such slow Galleys.

(5)1025AD: Damn caraval is finally done! Start sailing! Maceman continues.

lol, we're like... out of boats. Ok, I'll invade when troops get there. Or not because they may not get there...

(6)1030AD: Missionary is done, I start Mecca on a settler for that other tundra city we've been putting off... Narjan's mace is done, start courts to help that maintenence out...

1 more boatload and I think I'll land. Should be safe, as there is a forested hill near the landing site.

(7)1035AD: Nothing finished building this turn! Therefore the only thing that happened is that boats are in place for landing next turn.

(8)1040AD: XBow in Damascus is done. Build Christian Monastary for fun and culture. Culture...

Great Prophet born in Beijing. I send him towards Mecca to make Hindu Holy building for cash.

Let's go!

Izzy-War.jpg

Ok, not bad. Our troops will move across the river, while the cat bombards. No problem.

Mass Irrigration is going well at Kufah... I trade JC Monarchy in return for Lit and 130 gold. Gold...

(9)1045AD: Beijing's duct is done. I start a galley, because it will finish before the others get back :p. Medina's rax are done, start courts.

Start bombing barc with 1 cat... I think we'll need to use suicide macemen :p.

(10)1050AD: Feud is done. Now I can start guilds! Revolt to serfdom to help the farms get online for Kufah.

Settler in Mecca is done, start on a Longbow!

Ok, here's our position beside Barc. We've got two Cats so far to reduce defences, more should be coming. Do not try to take this city until its defences are down, because it's on a freaking hill, and we'll die if we go in before that.
Barcelona.jpg

Oh yes. I didn't notice before, but the position that Barcelona is in is terrible. If I had brought along another settler, it would be feasible to raze it and build where the swordsman is standing. But whatever.

Got it. I will be playing tonight.

Sounds like its going to be a fun turnset with the war.
