An SG for those who have never played an SG before

When did you find the chinese?

About that, im not actually all that sure I forgot to record that . I took a screenshot of it when Qin contacted me but i don't know what happened to it. their warrior came from the east and is roaming our lands in the west now.

ntallyn it's up to you whether you want to switch to animal husbandry and then go for mining i think that strategy is probably safer actually.

what is a sg {sucession game)? im looking to improve my game and have fun. Am i eligible?

an SG is when several players band together to play a single player game. Usually the first person plays 20 turns then the second person plays 15 and everyone else plays 10 after that.

SG's are really good to improve your game and can be a lot of fun. The players discuss strategy after everyone's turnset also many of these players have there own little tricks and have there own little playstyles so you can learn a lot from the individual players as well.

You're more then eligible to play a succession game. Ill be posting another succession game thread for beginners only. You should probably take a look at other succession games to get a feel for it. This SG is a game in progress so check back for any updates. Try looking around for other SG's in this forum, i would suggest Cuban Isolationists by Sirian and Sulla. I learned a lot from that game and i mean A LOT. here's the link:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=133492

Sulla and Sirian played there game with some Variant rules. Sometimes players will put handicaps on themselves to make the game more interesting or will try to win the game a certain way these are called variants. We are playing with no variants in this game though.

Got the save...

According to the Religion Advisor, Buddhism has already been founded elsewhere. Thus, I will change to Hunting, followed by Animal Husbandry.

The many silks will need Calendar for the Plantation, but that's for the future. As the south looks rather frozen, I will begin exploring towards the east.

I'm new to this kind of thing, so please bear with me.

Turn 0: Before starting, research changed from Meditation to Hunting. The plan is to get Animal Husbandry so we can hook up the cows.

Turn 1 (3200 BC): The Warrior in the East promotes to Woodsman I (to help heal, and for faster movement after Woodsman II), then heals. The Warrior in the Northwest begins heading towards the Northeast to explore.

Turn 2 (3160 BC): Mecca trains Warrior (fortified), begins training another Warrior. East Warrior spots wolves nearby, so moves to forest for better defense.

Between Turns: Wolves attack East Warrior. Warrior wins! 1.8 health remaining.

Turn 3 (3120 BC): East Warrior heals.

Turn 4 (3080 BC): :smoke:

Turn 5 (3040 BC): :smoke:

Turn 6 (3000 BC): :smoke:

Turn 7 (2960 BC): :smoke:

Turn 8 (2920 BC): Hunting discovered. Animal Husbandry started, and is due in 15 turns.

Turn 9 (2880 BC): Eastern Warrior discovers Chinese borders!

Turn 10 (2840 BC): Mecca trains Warrior. This Warrior will explore the South, and may be used later to escort Settlers. Mecca starts on Worker (will be due in 13 turns, same as Animal Husbandry).

Turn 11 (2800 BC): Wolves spotted in the Northeast!
<image goes here as soon as I figure out how to do it inline>

Between Turns: Wolves attack Northeast Warrior. Warrior wins unscathed! Promotion pending, but not used.

Turn 12 (2760 BC): :smoke:

Turn 13 (2720 BC): :smoke:

Turn 14 (2680 BC): Mecca expands its borders!

Turn 15 (2640 BC): Hut near Chinese borders pops map! Looks like we are on a rather small continent with the Chinese.
<image 2 here>

I recommend researching Mining (Gold -- happiness) and Fishing (Clams -- health) next, as well as starting a Settler after the Worker is done.

I'd definitely go mining -> BW for next set of turns. Need to find out where copper is. I'm not much of one to be dotmapping, but it looks like getting some settlers to the east to box in Qin looks like the best strategy. If we keep borders closed, all the crappy land to the west will be ours anyway. Would maybe try that hill with the rice and wine, and then on the river by the silks. Definitely want to know where the metal is before totally comitting to anything though.

I have a dotmap in the works right now so i'll post it when i finish it.

OK here it is:

Detailed_Dotmap_2.JPG

I really don't think we'll be able to get the black dot but blue dot and red dot are a must followed by green dot. Since we're on an isalnd we're going to have to look for the metals quick so that we can hook them up and take out the chinese, this island is just not big enough for the two of us. Also we're going to need an early great prophet for the hindu shrine so i was going to build stonehenge but when i saw the silks and the marble i kind of changed my mind. We should hook up that marble and get The Oracle for the great prophet points. We're also going to need to build a galley quick so that we can see if we can sail to another land and maybe set up a colony, it'll probably hurt our economy a bit but i dread amphibious invasions. Our little island doesn't have that many resources and if we don't expand to another land we won't be able to spread the faith as easily either.

S.ilver is up on another SG right now so don't expect his report to come in till tomorrow

I made a dotmap earlier, nothing special, just something I made in about 5 minutes, just not sure how to post screenies. Any help with that would be awesome.

First go to upload file at the very bottom of the screen a window will popup titled CivFanatics Easy File Upload System go to browse and find your screenie. click on upload and wait after it's uploaded click on a link titled View Current Upload Folder 11 look for the name of your screenie (make sure you rename it to something) and right click it and select copy shortcut. Put your insertion point wherever you want the screenie to go and click on insert image ( it's on the formatting toolbar) in the space where it says Please enter the URL of your image right click it and click paste your image should appear like this { IMG "name of your image" IMG }.

I might try and settle agressively and go for blue dot 2E to grab the clams, but unless thats the next site we won't get it. I'd suspect the next two Chinese cities will be near there and near black dot. Might be worth moving green dot one north to try and grab cows and writing black dot off altogether. Again, a lot depends on where Copper is, wherever that is I would prioritize as the next city site, since I agree, wiping Qin out the sooner the better is the way to go, theres no way theres enough room for 2 Civs on this continent, and the follow that by an colonization push, since this island sucks. I'll take a look at the save in a bit and see if anything else grabs me.

EDIT: Ok, looking a bit closer, really, this island just sucks. I still like blue 2E but I doubt we'll get it before Qin does, red is probably the best city site. I'm also feeling that angst I always feel towards religion starts - so much teching to do not enough time. :P Anyway, probably best bet is to get red and blue and hope for the best with metal, and then hope our galleys can find another island sooner rather than later.

Got it. Expect the report in about 8 hours.

(0)2640BC: Preflight check... there really is nothing for me to check on :p.

(1)2600BC: Exploring some. I notice that Qin's power rating is much higher than ours. I deduce that he has archery and I see that we don't.

(2)2560BC: More exploring... Since we're on such a small island, would it be a bad idea to destroy Qin?

(3)2520BC: More exploring... Oh, I slaughter a bear for fun. Yay, experience.

(4)2480BC: I think I will attack Qin. I can get a free worker, and pillage his capital city out, which should slow his growth a lot, and counter that financial trait. Woodsman upgrades are very helpful for this, as I notice Qin has lots of forests immediately around his capital, making it safe for us to lurk around and keep him confined.

(5)2440BC: Moving towards Qin.

(6)2400BC: Gonna sack Qin's worker next turn.

(7)2360BC: Capture a worker... and discover that Qin DOES NOT have archers. Wow. WTH?

(8)2320BC: Animal Husbandry is done, start mining. We have horses, RIGHT BESIDE our capital. Time to smack Qin. Bah! I notice he JUST built an archer this turn. That sucks...

Worker done in captial, start on Barracks. I want Mecca to grow a bit before a settler.

IBT: Qin foolishly attacks our woodsmen warriors with an archer and a warrior, which are IN THE WOODS! OMG, lol they die so bad . And he left only 1 warrior defending his capital! Dumb AI...

(9)2280BC: Apparently, Qin was having an extreme case of bad luck attacking into those forests. One of our Warriors is not damaged, and the other is no more damaged than it was after taking out that Bear. I lose our Woodsman 1 warrior on the assault, but woodsman 2 is more that enough to finish the wounded warrior.

Beijing.jpg

The island is ours.

In less exciting news, our warrior to the south beats the snot out of a lion.

(10)2240BC: lol, I was not expecting to take Beijing so easily. I already started sending the captured worker back to Mecca, but I turn him around and get him to work building on the farm.

Turn Synopsis.

Beijing comes out of resistance in 2 turns. This unexpected gain gives us some nice resources, and lessens the need for settlers, although we still want one as soon as possible. However, I am inclined to let Mecca grow another pop before we start on a settler. This would give the worker a chance to do something there as well, like finish with the horses.

Military will only be needed for escorting settlers and killing animals for now. At least until barbs begin showing up. Also, the fact that we now OWN Qin's land gives us more freedom to settle, in not having to block the guy in, thereby letting us settle on more desirable terrain (i.e. not all that desert there...).

An interesting fact. Beijing has 10 forests around it. Wow. Lot's of trees. We may want bronzeworking very quickly to fell those trees and get Beijing working better. It has an amazing +5 to health though, so we may want to save an even number of forests for lumbermills later (much later) in the game.

Look at all them silks we have! 6! Count em, 6! We will be in an excellent happy trading position later in the game.

Great, great stuff there Silver. I briefly debated the wisdom of pillage harassing Qin when I looked at the save, since we had units and nothing to explore, but never even dreamed of taking his capital before metals. Sure, took advantage of extremely :smoke: play by the AI, but fortune favors the bold! (tm)

Definitely time for new dotmappage, and a priorities rethink, but we can grow in peace and shift priority to getting some ships out and infra up. Things are definitely looking up. :D

Nice job Silver. Wow I can't believe you took the Chinese capital so quickly.

This is my got it post. I'll be playing tomorrow night around 20 hours from now.

It would really help me to see a new dot map now that we have the whole island to ourselves now.

 holy frickin cow that was awesome S.ilver i had to reread the post 3 times cause i couldn't believe you took out a capital with 2 Warriors, 2 MEASLY WARRIORS!!!!

Im coming up with a new dotmap for the settlement of the entire island except for the tundra, i realize the sea in that tundra hasn't been entirely explored yet and that's practically the only thing that the tundra cities will be working. Also, i don't think going for bronze working right now is a good idea. Our next few cities will be mostly coastal ones and we don't even have fishing so i suggest we go for fishing and sailing first. We can pretty much neglect our military thanks to S.ilver so i suggest we stay away from the military techs for now in exception with archery and focus more on things to improve our cities like granaries and such. I also want to hook up that marble quick and get building on that oracle, and if we can, the parthenon. We should also try and spread our religion to every city (half priced temples) so organized religion is important to get for that reason. Then we can beeline it to calendar and then beeline to compass (for caravels) so we can get the hell out of this stinkin island.

Right now though i think fishing and sailing should be our top priority followed by masonry or pottery for the granaries. Then finally meditation and priesthood for the temples and the oracle. BTW i know this is a little early in the game but with this kind of start i think maybe a cultural victory is warranted, that's kind of why i want those temples to be built soon but then again it's way too early in the game.

Cultural is pretty boring for an SG I think, hundred turns or so of hitting enter at the end from my experience. I also wouldn't neglect BW - the chop will be huge if we want any wonders, and Beijing is begging to be chopped. Also, no reason not to get Slavery ASAP as its great in fishing villages (of which we'll have a few) and its no upkeep, and we're spiritual which means we get to switch to it immediately.

My tech path would be Mining -> BW -> Fishing -> Masonry -> Meditation -> Priesthood -> Sailing. Chop/Slavery/Metals, ability to work the coast/lake, hook up the marble, build the oracle (no reason to ever pass that up if you can get it,) ability to get some exploring galleys out/build lighthouses. I'm up for debate as to the order beyond BW, but it just seems silly to me to delay chop/slavery unless you're doing a strict beeling/slingshot attempt which we aren't.

As Sirian & Sulla would say "Sometimes it's better to be lucky that good." (tm). In this case, that statement describes it totally. I went in with only the intention of grabbing that worker to help speed up Mecca's development, as well as to deny Qin it, and maybe try to pillage his improvements. When he built the archer, I thought "Great... so much for the sneak attack...". But then he pulled a real :smoke: by attacking the woodsman warriors in the conviently placed forests, leaving his capital with 1 warrior :p.

So I guess I can say I was lucky twice, first, that Qin was dumb enough to suicide his troops on my woodsmen, and second, that those two warriors were able to beat the RNG and take out the enemy capital (1st warrior had like a 3% chance to win, but I guess chance to win doesn't include chance to do damage to the enemy, because he really hurt that warrior...).

saladindotmap.JPG

My attempt at a dotmap. Purple, Red and Pink dots look the best sites. Green lets us work the marble and gets clams. The darker yellow and orange are southern coast and resource heavy, pale yellow is just something because 1. I some resource is bound to pop on the desert, prolly copper, and hate leave floodplains unworked. Brown was just me thinking something needs to go in the south.

looks like Gaspar beat me to it. My dotmap looks pretty much like yours only light yellow dot was moved one tile down to avoid the three tile overlap and orange dot was put somewhere completely different to take advantage of all three silks tiles there. I split my dotmap into 2 sections the eastern half and the western half but i like your city placement of the western side so i wont even bother uploading that one. Heres my eastern half though it's pretty much the same.

We're gonna miss out on the fish though no matter what :(
