I personally think that the Machine Gun shouldn't be the last unit in the Archer path, since this unit seems to be the machineguns used in WWI and in WWII (correct me if I'm wrong). However, I can't think of anything that could be after the Machine Gun.
Do you think it is alright that as it is or there should be another unit after Machine Gun? Which unit would you add then?
Besides, any advancments (such as materials and calibers) made to machine guns since WW2 have been incremental in nature, not really significant enough to create a new unit. Mostly, you have advancements of placing machine guns onto mobile platforms, which really just improves the vehicle, not the machine gun.
Whatever would replace the machine gun doesn't exist yet because machine guns are very good at what they do. The key is to replace the machine gun squad. Perhaps a machine gun-toting terrestrial drone or autonomous robot.
Either that or we start using high explosives against infantry, which is against the Geneva Conventions, IIRC.

Modern machine guns are as different from a WWI Maxim as an M-16 is different from a bolt-action WWI Mauser rifle. However, the issue is in-game Strength; since they now have three tiers of "modern infantry" (WWI Infantry, WWII Infantry/Paratroopers/Marines, Mechanized Infantry), the 60 Strength of the WWI Machine Gun is going to be rendered useless in post-WWI eras unless there's an upgrade.

Post-WWII Machine gun type 'nests' and 'lines' have gone obsolete with Air power and missile/artillery techs.
Most machine guns are just attached to mech infantry or 'modern cavalry' mixed groups (still mech based)/tanks, so an individual unit just isn't 'right'.
Yes, it's different than a Maxim, however, The example I would draw is the Browning M2 .50 caliber machine gun. We still use it in a largely unchanged way 90 years after it was invented at the end of WW1. Whatever improvements have been made are in the way of materials and manufacturing processes. The weapons are still used the same way with the same effectiveness.
The difference between machine guns then and now is not as significant as the changes in sidearms have been between muskets and breachloaders, breachloaders and bolt-actions, bolt-actions and semi-automatics, and thus the units which used them. I don't see a need for a new unit after the Machine Gun unless it's a future tech unit because the Machine Gun is not obsolete.
Currently, the best HMG is the world is the (albeit modernized) M2 Ma deuce firing browning .50 caliber, which first came into service right after WW1. It's near 100 years older now and nothing has really come along and replaced it. There really have been no great advances in machine guns for a 100 year period.

I came up with a (rather complicated) idea for a sniper unit a while back.
Basically, it is in the same category as workers/settlers (it dies instantly if attacked) but has the slinger's withdrawal promotion. If upgraded from a slinger, it receives a higher percentage of success. It would insta-kill GG's inside units (and outside of units). It would automatically deal 10-20 damage to tanks, infantry etc. One of its main strengths would be that it does huge damage to cities (and garrisoned units).
Yes, which can be simulated by not having any succesor unit to the machine gun. It's importance is lessened because it can't dish out as much damage but it's still a ranged unit and that's always good.
Realistic or not, if we don't want to have the crossbow problem just be delayed until the modern era, there needs to be something after.
Making it simple, it could just be a machine gun on a vehicle, "mechanize machine guns".

I don't think there can be a crossbow problem there, as the MG will probably be fairly powerful in the WW2 unit set, and maybe only slightly less effective against Mech. Infantry. The small gap there is a far cry from trying to take out Mech. Infantry with crossbows, as it looks like Mg's will have 4 times the strength.
At about 10:00 in this GDC interview, Ed Beach says of ranged units, "...they don't end at the Crossbow anymore; you can now go up through the Gatling Gun to the Machine Gun."
There seems to be the implication that the line stops there.
A lot of units lack late game upgrades. For example, Destroyers and Carriers have no modern day upgrades, even though Bombers come LATER in the tech tree and still get upgraded into Stealth Bombers. A modern day carrier is greatly needed to carry Stealth Bombers.

For that matter, in WW II itself, machine guns were attached to infantry squads.
A typical ratio would be something like
6 rifles : 3 automated rifles : 1 machine gun
Everyone would also have a knife; which in case of the rifles could be attached as a bayonet.
As to an upgrade path for Machine Guns; I'd suggest Mech Infantry.
In terms of realism; it would be stealth bombers can attack anywhere in the world (as long as you have a couple of friendly bases for the air-air refueling)
