And so it begins...

I guess we won't reach a consensus on this matter, so a poll will be needed yes. But how to conduct such a poll? A simple "choose your one favorite" won't do, but a multi-choice "pick your five" wouldn't be good either since it will give equal strength to someone's obvious first choice as their "must pick one more to include" fifth choice.

IMO the best way to make such a poll is to not use the built-in polls, but rather let each team member give their list of five, count a first place as 5 points, second as four etc. Sum all points to get the final list. Requires some hand calculations, but how hard could it be?

Oh my, the eurovision songfestival method . A surefire way to make sure that the best option wins  :D.

I'm in threadstarting mode tonight, so here is a poll thread.

Before I vote - I'd really like to know if Hwacha's get a defensive bombard and if they can be caputured.

Any of the Korea defenders know the answer? (or anyone else?)

Thanks!
:salute:

Civilipodeia says nothing about the defensive bombard - but it doesn't say anything about cannons getting it, so I assume it's the same.

I can't imagine they can be captured - or if they are, they would be just cannon.

But that's my understanding of what Hawacha ARE... cannon's with lethal bombardment.

If defensive bombardment is logical... then should getting captured be logical also?

If no one knows, maybe we just need to do a test somehow? Sadly, I have no gift for setting up Civ3 Scenarios...

btw - i like the list. i like playing scientific civs, and I like france, too. I don't think the UU matters that much - I don't think we are going to get attacked very early no matter what.

IIRC Hwachas can be captured, and then they turn into cannon. Their attack and defense ratings are 0, so I suppose it works the same as normal cannons, except that they can take away a unit's final hitpoint (and thus kill it). This means that on defense a Hwacha stacked with another unit will support the defense of that unit with a free shot. I don't know if (re-)captured cannons turn into Hwachas.

ok - thanks for that!
If we end up playing Korea, maybe I'll see if I can figgure out how to set up a test so we know for sure.

I tested playing Korea yesterday (on basis of Abegweit's submitted save in Cotm 11) and I could upgrade a captured catapult. :)
I had no opportunity to capture a canon :(

But all my Hwach'as were destroyed when a Mongol (they knew metall) attacked them - even when I had stacked them with workers and the workers where captured. Is that good or bad? Against human players rather good because you can't play the recapture-game with humans, right?
And IIRC it's even an exploit to share arties (to attack for both the same turn eg) with your allies that way, right? :hmm:

Thanks for doing that Paul!!

Wow - that makes Hwach'as pretty risky units for us - no chance to recapture if an enemy catches you with your pants down.

Still - it seems unlikely we'll end up with Korea. Last time, I think everyone got their first choice, iirc.

We are upto date with our UN votes ... only thing is if someone can open a g-mail account for the team.

Are we close to beginning an election/nomination of Department Chairs yet?

I was going to open the gmail, but they are requiring that you get a text message sent to your cell phone and my cell is out of power and not with me right now...

I rather judge this an advantage - if some human opponent catches us pants down I'm pretty sure he will avoid to lose that unit again - he would almost certainly destroy it if he was not sure that he could keep it. So this rather saves our H'wachas from being kidnapped :D

The other side of the medal I could not test yet: Can we capture foreign canons and are they H'wachas immediately or do they have to be upgraded? :hmm:

I am curious to see how the different roles are distributed in this kind of game.
Are there any examples I could check up on?

Perhaps the previous MTDG. All teams except KISS had some sort of government structure.

There were quite a few threads there...not that easy to digest it all and to deduct how the roles between the participants were distributed.:(

Oh well, I will just have to learn along the way.:)

We're not going to do it that way anyway. Better then to check out the "Who we are and how we work" thread in this forum, where we discuss how we intend to be organized for this game. :)
