AngNES I: A Divine Wind

The blood of mortals is that which is most kin to the immortals. For blood is life; life flows through our veins. Blood is the giver of all movement and energy, the vitality that drives a living thing. And it is blood that holds the true power of man.

- The Book of Blood

They called the temple the Conclave in those days. It was, they said, the first holy place of men, a place where the priests could gather and talk. The sacrificial altar here was little used, but almost every holy man of Evet had passed between the tall standing stones. Here, they learned the Book of Blood, and the Book of Ages. Here, they prayed to the gods, maintained a dozen shrines, and dissected the myths that already grew old in retellings. Here, they tried to understand the world within, and the world without.

It was the young priest's home no longer.

He rooted through his room, flinging aside the vestments that lay scattered across the floor, searching for the few things that might be worth taking with him. The rich clothing would be useless to him. A knife, twenty times more valuable, went through his belt. A walking stick he could find later, no need to carry it with him now. Turning to go, the scrolls gave him pause. None of them were unusual, by themselves. But even so, they might help him year hence...

No time to think about it. He gathered one of them and ran from the room, feet pounding on the stone floors. The footsteps echoed through the chambers, the slaps of sandals prompting others to give chase. They were not hunting for him – not yet, but no doubt they would. He ran faster.

A cool breeze whipped his face as he lef the temple stones behind him, fleeing into the city night. Sleepy beggars stirred and watched him with wide, wary eyes, but no one stopped him. Yet. He knew that the gates would be closed through the night, and even though the walls might be easy enough to climb and leap down, the guards would not take kindly to some man in the middle of the night, even one who fled the city. There had to be alternatives.

The docks? He dismissed the idea as quickly as it occurred to him. Even should he sneak onto a ship, the sailors did not take kindly to men appearing in their midst, and it might take days for one to leave. Was there some other, secret way? His run faltered as he realized the temple was far out of sight, and he had no idea where he was going.

The sun was rising.

His heart started beating faster. Perhaps he could swim out the harbor? But they would never let him pass in the light, and he would have to hide for the day. No matter what path he imagined, he would have to get out of the streets. These people did not know his face, but soon there would be the temple knives.

“Priest?” asked a confused voice. He spun, and saw a woman standing in the door of her home. Her shadow started to form on the ground beside her, and he saw a reddish glow above the horizon out of the corner of his eye. He was out of time.

“Do not call me that,” he said, his voice betraying his fear. “I flee the day terrors, Idara.”

The woman regarded him with an even eye. “Come in.” And the sun left his cloak untouched as he slipped into the building.

Kay, replies first, then the new join template, and then for the last post I make, I have some additional setup and some NPC diplomacy for you guys. Perhaps even some framework about Akvurians, etc, ready for you guys to fill. I'm sorry if my update method is too chaotic, I like a flowing, breathing world, and I have a hard time parsing all I want within one sitting. If you want things more structured, please tell me so.
Cool stuff, even if I now have to be so spectacular you can't not mention me. ;)

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure you'll get a mention the next update. Not sure of course. I plan to focus on Lyllas as they're really important for knitting together the north.

I really liked your story. I'm intrigued to what is happening with the priest. I'll soon set up a GDocs folder where your stories can be posted - a kind of all-encompasing tome that is eventually to contain all ancient lore of this NES.

I am sad not to get mentioned :(

I'm sorry about that. The style didn't really allow for it this time. I hope I didn't turn you off the NES or anything like it.

It only means I will strive to do something significant this time around! :viking:

I'm happy to hear that! I hope you're lucky with whatever endeavours you decide upon. :)

NPC Diplomacy

From: The Republic of Liunle, Liunle
To: The Republic of Athicia, Athicia

We are sick and tired of your dominance of our common sea. And understand our position of power. We are sure to have Thlalis backing our cause in case any conflict should erupt between us. The Seychian kings wish for better opportunities and wealth which they have a hard time attaining. However, all of our problems can easily be solved. We offer you a trade agreement where Liun merchants will have easier access to the markets dominated by you. (OOC: That agreement may or may not hurt your trade economy growth and will boon theirs.)

-

From: The Republic of Liunle, Liunle
To: The Elder Circle, Tuse

Your villages and tribes are invading Thlayllian lands. We understand your opportunities are being encroached by the northern Thlalis. We can arrange an agreement where you will gain influence on Liun trade politics in return for administrative installations within your territory. We do after all only guarantee those under our own laws.

From: The Elder Circle, Tuse
To: The Republic of Liunle, Liunle

We have always only wished to live in peace. You foreigners only conquer our peaceful villages and ruin our sacred sites. May the Great Spirit be gentle upon you in your death, for we will never submit under your cruel rule.

-

From: Thrachen dynasty, Thraches
To: Uchar dynasty, Lasche

Dear kinsmen, please! The Tuksans are invading our peaceful farmsteads, and our state is failing at the influence of the barbarians! Please help us destroy their numbers!

-

From: Achesis dynasty, Niliche
To: Achumenides dynasty, Epos

We are the true Divine Heir. You have no gods among your ranks. Understand that this is ours to rule, your land; and that you are ours by divine right. You may pay us tribute of thousand Lepe each decade (Mod: 1 EP per turn) to prevent our just ruination of your countryside as heretic scum.

From: Achumenides dynasty, Epos
To: Achesis dynasty, Niliche

We submit, we wish not for another war.

-

From: Kabas dynasty, Ordos
To: Kaskal dynasty, Tigriros

The Abyssans are a threat to us all. Help us, they are destroyers of this land, from faraway plains of demons. They are slowly conquering our lands and turning the Atradie against us. We are a dying people!

From: Kaskal dynasty, Tigriros
To: Kabas dynasty, Ordos

Your concern is none of ours. We are tired of your people.

-

Mod: Abyssans and Atradie is periodically at war with Ordos.

-

Mod: Ithun is periodically at war with Tagras and Lyllas, and its south falling to Rappan and Sofid warbands. Tagras and Lyllas are allied.

-

From: Illas elective council, Illas
To: Tartaron dynasty, Dosopus

Dear eastern neighbours - there are plenty of enemies in this world, and an alliance between our peoples would benefit us greatly towards the terrible enemies to the north and northwest. We would like to ask you to make a defensive pact and trade agreement so our peoples will prosper together.

From: Tartaron dynasty, Dosopus
To: Illas elective council, Illas

We wish for no such thing.

-

From: Dorians dynasty, Dora
To: Arthar elective council, Lyllas
To: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast

Dear neighbours! We find that peace is the sign of prosperity. We never wish for bloodshed. Rather, we only want your hand in peace and us all to benefit from trade. We propose an alliance and trade agreement with lowered tariffs to our respective merchants so that all of us will benefit. (Mod: Each may gain increased trade growth with a slight chance of those not called Lyllas of a drop in trade income due to rough competition.)

From: Arthar elective council, Lyllas
To: Dorians dynasty, Dora
To: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast

We accept, at least. Gaiacast, you are free to agree with us too, if you wish.

-

Mod: for the rest of the NPCs, please wait until tomorrow or later today. I'm tired out for now. :p

I would like to claim Tevis.

From: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast

We agree upon a friendship in which we can mutually benefit from trade, knowledge and culture.

We do ask if we can set up a small temple of our beloved Goddess Gaia

From: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast
To: Tartaron dynasty, Dosopus
We would like to see if there are possibilities to a futuring friendship, we know that our nations are very different and we are not sure if such a thing is in our mutual interest but let's keep things open...for the sake of Gaia our beloved Goddess.

To Kuru's urging the drums beat out their rhythmic beat fast and faster. The tribes people of Womad danced around the fire to the beat of the drums. Calling out to their Kuru to bless them and next years harvests. Kuru was pleased. After ascending the throne in his late brothers position there had murmurs of dissent, they were forgotten now. Two successful harvests left the people happy and fed, an with many more mouths on the way, this growing tribe was doing well.
Some were not happy in the surroundings of the former kings expulsion. Accused of relations with a goat, he was hounded out by the mob and stoned to death. Only two people claimed to have seen the crime, but the mob moves quickly, there was no such thing as a judge and jury here. Kuru ascended the throne upon his brothers death, picking a huge brute of a man to be his aide. Few dared to openly argue.

Mons's%20Goblin%20Raiders.JPG

Scouting parties had seen rise several nations futher along the coast, they would have to be investigated with time. For now the Womad were too happy to care. Game was plentyful, the winters had been kind and spring was just beginning to dawn. It was a time of renewal and growth for the tribe.

Now, to some responses and further diplomacy.

I would like to claim Tevis.

Recognized. :)

From: Arthar elective council, Lyllas
To: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast

We are glad to cooperate and prosper together.

Certainly may you raise temples in our nation, albeit for a small fee of 1 EP.

From: Dorians dynasty, Dora
To: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast

Certainly you may build a small temple in our nation, dear friend! Assuming you allow our citizens sanctuary, of course.

From: Dalar dynasty, Das Dalar
To: Harappi tribe, Dukatsheh

Tribesmen, you have expanded into Akar lands and your aggressive commercial practices make all copper markets dwindle. I have spoken with Mashkan and it is obvious they have suffered the same under your ill-casting grip. However, we will overlook your trespassing if you pay us a wealthy fine and grant us control over you tin mines. (Mod: 1 EP per turn paid from Dukatsheh to Das Dalar each turn.)

From: Harappi tribe, Dukatsheh
To: Dalar dynasty, Das Dalar

We refuse to bow to your empty, pigheaded threats! We are bringing only fair trades to the markets, you have no right to do this!

From: Dalar dynasty, Das Dalar
To: Harappi tribe, Dukatsheh

Very well. Consider this a declaration of war. Mashkan will honor their word and bring their spears to the frontier. We'll see to ending the Rappan decadence of this region.

From: Shafab dynasty, Mashkan
To: Harappi tribe, Dukatsheh

We are honoring our word. Soon you will see our warriors abundant on your hills. Your last son's head will see the bottom of the Wondrous Flow. (Mod: Flow of Wonders, the Copper River.)

From: Harappi tribe, Dukatsheh
To: Hasif dynasty, Usama

Neighbours of the north! We are under attack without a proper cause! Will you help us out and fight the invaders? We will guarantee you all of Mashkan's lands in return along with Das Dalar and everything west of it.

From: Hasif dynasty, Usama
To: Harappi tribe, Dukatsheh

This is none of our business, if even capacity. You are on your own.

From: Harappi tribe, Dukatsheh
To: Hall of Representatives, Kethesh

City of stars! Shiny jewel of the great sea! Walls and towering complexes, pinnacle of all that is good and civilized. Our - your - neighbours are desecrating our lands in spite of your grand beauty. Your power is wealthy, your force imminent. Our chiefdoms and their traders have been nothing but kind to your merchant families in all memorial. They face destruction if our lands are lost to the greedy Das Dalar. They will grow in power and perhaps outpower you. We know that your wisdom can't accept this! Will you help us in defeating the enemy? In return, if we are victorious we will grant you all of Mashkan under your just rule. We only wish for our people to remain alive.

-

From: Happan merchants, Tishkish
To: Hall of Representatives, Kethesh

Friends of the east,
Long have we been entwined on the rich seas of the market, but long have we also suffered. But it is not a threat to you, as the suffering is not on your hands. Our cruel, backwards rule of the Husul chieftains are strangling our nation with tight rope. We emulate your ways. Help us insurrect, and bring down the Husul tyranny in Tishkish, grant us a place within your council, and help us build a wall around our nation with our mutually competent warriors!
Your friend, representative of the Happan Hammer, Logan

From: Tartaron dynasty, Dosophus
To: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast

We accept your hand of friendship. If you ever come to our ports, you shall arrive to our wealth in open arms - and we understand that you, too, realize the abomination that is the man of Illas.

From: Avkotar dynasty, Dekab
To: The Speaker, Usharros

Friends of the north!
The west is moving. The Gurakdut are getting more and more restless by the day and when the western Akar fall, they may be heading east towards us. We are worried of our bankiers and merchants and the safety of yours too. Das Dalar will not be able to help us either and we do not trust the Tarkab. Will you sign a defensive pact with us in case the Gurakdut ride their chariots eastwards?

-

Next is Darian diplomacy, but I don't think I can make it for today.

Lambda Ignaceae, I reckon you play Magic the Gathering too? :) And I smiled a little at the pictures and culture; I've already mentioned your nation as "Not-Orcs" tangentially on #nes. I'm happy I got your culture right. :)

Well if by "right" you mean an unstoppable horde that will vanquish all before them?

And yes, back in the day I played MtG, so it was fun to pull those images. They could prove quite handy for story telling as long as I stick with the more "human" goblin artwork.

Your Cause shines like a jewel on the horizon, bringing anguish to the hearts of all good men. Kethesh, may Ciril guard her, is greatly sorrowed at the cruel treatment you have received. You may rest assured that, in exchange for your eternal friendship, we will help you.

Will you sign a defensive pact with us in case the Gurakdut ride their chariots eastwards?

From Speaker Nausake Usharr, Leader of the Usharros
To Kings of Avkotar Line, Rulers of Dekab

Friends of the South!

We hear your plea, and agree to sign a defensive pact with you. The evil Water Cultists wish to flow to the sea like the irresistible spring floods, but together, we shall stand like the great levee, to redirect it's flow against itself, until it stands as do sheep in the sun, to be baked into the mud and returning to the earth itself, and to be defeated by our union.

But they know our unity is our strength, and devise such a trick as to place a mighty cleavage of their essence into the body of Mother Earth between our two brother nations, so that we can only see each other from the distant banks, unable to reach across without risking life, limb, and soul. My friend, I first suggest that we build a great bridge to span the Great River, so that troops and trade alike can walk over water as they do over land, and that our people shall be connected by earth instead of divided by water. (OOC: How much would this cost?)

I also note from my friend, the First Spear of Usharr, that Gurakdut are dumb barbarians. Overconfident and tall bestride their great chariots, they flow like the water towards the easiest prey, flooding the lowlands before inching up and eroding the heights. It behooves us that we march against them while they are so preoccupied against the Akar of the West. Indeed, against such evil the only true victory is to reach it's very heart, and tear it out of the body of Mother Earth, and burn the wounds it leaves, and bury it in the ash of it's own flesh.

If you agree to strike instead of cower, we shall march on both sides of this abominable river and drive their people away form our borders like a dog drives sheep away from the bushes. And they shall strike, but their fearsome chariots, if they strike north you shall march south. If they strike south we shall march north. And if they strike, the Akar of the west shall march eastward towards their undefended homes. And even if they win, and ride for our own homes, we shall raise a militia like the world has never seen, for two great cities of Father Earth have united against them. And the army they have yet defeated continues to march against their own homes.

But I do not intend to press. WE shall be united in defense against such a foe. I merely wish to offer to place a bridge of wood and stone to cross the perilous waters dividing us, as well as note the great weakness of the enemy, in presenting their backs to those like we, holding so sharp their knives.

One question on military: does each army unit we have requires one population to be sustained per turn, or is population a resource that is exhausted when you create a new military unit?

From: Thrachen dynasty, Thraches
To: Uchar dynasty, Lasche

Dear kinsmen, please! The Tuksans are invading our peaceful farmsteads, and our state is failing at the influence of the barbarians! Please help us destroy their numbers!

Of course we will aid you against these infidel barbarians. We shall drive them into the blasted sands from which they came.

@mythmonster2: The population stat describes the total army size you can sustain without gaining problems yes.

-

From: Maguroras, Tagras
To: Temple of Gaia, Gaiacast
Hail eastern brethren. We of course welcome you to our court, under the watch of our guards. We will not bother in regional conflicts such as the nonsensual Illas-Dosophus divide. It is none of our concern. Why care you ask?

From: Avkotar dynasty, Dekab
To: Speaker Nausake Usharr, Usharros
We welcome your friendship splendidly! However, in regards to the bridge; we welcome your proposal and will indeed welcome its construction, but we have no money to spare as of now.
(Mod: I don't know how much the bridge will cost. It depends on its scale. It could range from 2 to 8 EP depending on your project size.)

-

Darian diplomacy probably tonight.

From: Cyrus dynasty, Cyrus
To: Damica dynasty, Lepe

Brothers! Long have we lived on these fresh banks; peace and growth is plentiful and no wars between our peoples have ever happened. As we are both aware, we share a common ancestry, not only in people and practice, but with the twin founders of our dynasty. We propose that we honor our interweavement with a trade union; one that will allow for free trade for our merchants in both of our nations - this will benefit both of our peoples and allow for more easier competition towards the Kamians.

From: Damica dynasty, Lepe
To: Cyrus dynasty, Cyrus

Brothers, we accept your proposal. May we always grow in wealth!

(Mod: They will probably both benefit economically next update with a minor chance of backlash.)

~

From: Cyrus dynasty, Cyrus
To: The Divine Heritage, Evet

Illyans to the south,
We have noticed your rampant growth and recent prosperity and only wish you well, for your safe ports are the greatest place for us to exchange our goods.
However, we wish to warn you: Do not expand northwards towards our lands. We will see it as an act of aggression.
Will you eternally live in peace!

~

From: Kamian council, Kamian
To: Teper dynasty, Krite

Neighbours to the east. We are worried with your recent expansion. Will you cease to conquer land west of the river? If so, we would be honored to arrange a trade agreement between our peoples.

From: Teper dynasty, Krite
To: Kamian council, Kamian

We accept your proposal. But in case the wild Womads attack, we will need your help in battle. Is that acceptable?

From: Kamian council, Kamian
To: Teper dynasty, Krite

We accept!

(Mod: Kamians have a chance to have increased economy next update. Krite less so, and has a somewhat present chance to lose trade eco.

Also, Womad, watch your back. ;))

~

From: Teper dynasty, Krite
To: Kuruwamap dynasty, Womad

Wild beastmen - beware and hold your barbaric ways to yourselves. Our capable armies are not afraid of your primitive clubsmen.

(Mod: Don't worry, you do have axes. (The weapon. Not the unit type.) He's mocking you because he can.)

-

Finally, a major notice:

Remember the update is due 6pm this Friday GMT +1.

The update will span 100 years. Yes, I said 50 years before. I have decided upon 100.

I have not received any orders yet, but I know how NESers are, so I don't worry. :p
