Animated History of Poland

Had a very Civ4 feel to it, but looks like it's lacking in cultural events. It makes it seem like Poland is one big eternal war.

It's only a trailer. In full version will be at least two our artists (Chopin and Mickiewicz).

I disagree. There is nothing wrong with telling the story of a nation, even if you just focus on their successes and vilify their historical enemies.
As long as they don't push the history too much.
If the premise is to let a nation look awesome it will inevitable mispresent history.
In anycase, you cannot argue that Polish history, especially from the 1300-1650 made a very successful nation of itself.
I really can't, because I have no clue. All I know from that time span is that the Polish helped to stick it to the Turks. I have to watch the movie I guess.

Really more like 1450-1620 in purely military-political terms, with significant setbacks in the midst of it all

No glorification? Come one, just watch the very first scene. Some guy rams a stick into the ground, a big lightning sphere aroses and BAM! - Poland is born!
That is not exactly how nations arise.

Dude, that's exactly how it happened  It was a magical stick, ok?

@Aquila SPQR When the final video comes out, can you post it here? I wanna see it, but I'll likely forget

Warpus - sure thing, as far as I know it will be shown on some movie festival which will take place this month. So probably then they will release full version to everyone.

Significant internal reforms were introduced during the later part of the 18th century, but the reform process was not allowed to run its course, as the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia and the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy through a series of invasions and partitions terminated the Commonwealth's independent existence in 1795. From then until 1918 there was no independent Polish state. The Poles had engaged intermittently in armed resistance until 1864. After the failure of the last uprising, the nation preserved its identity through educational and other nonviolent activities such as organic work. The opportunity for freedom appeared only after World War I, when the oppressing powers were defeated or weakened by war and revolution. The Second Polish Republic was established and existed from 1918 to 1939. It was destroyed by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union by their Invasion of Poland at the beginning of World War II. Millions of Polish citizens perished in the course of the Nazi occupation.

I know that later on, Polish History can be summed up in 8 words: 'Being constantly beat up by Russians and Germans'.

That's a good one! :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I love those "experts" of Polish history :)

When Polish nationalists have a history fight with other people, nobody wins.

I'd say "when trolls come, nobody wins". :) I can't think of some CFC's "experts of geography/history" in other way, sorry.

Oh, by the way - I say American history can be described in six words: "got pwned by Indians and Mexico". Say something else and you're an American nationalist. Curious :)

Don't start exhibiting that typical nationalist victim complex to me. I don't have the same jaundiced view of Polish political and military history as the people to whom you and Domen were responding, but it's difficult not to accentuate the negatives and ignore the positives when talking to people like you who get butthurt about it. It's a vicious cycle, and I'll thank you to not help perpetuate it. Post about stuff other than Polish history once in awhile, or something.

It's really an interesting and fantastic analysis. Thank you :)

The truth is simple - trolls will always be trolls. They'll always try to write funnier things they are really capable of and insist writing the same, boring jokes. Yeah - there are some people who like such low sense of humor, but in fact - they are tragic.

but it's difficult not to accentuate the negatives and ignore the positives when talking to people like you who get butthurt about it

That times have passed long ago - right now I actually consider such posts/people silly and I mean that sincerely :D

Post about stuff other than Polish history once in awhile, or something.

Suggestion noted, but I'm afraid I can't do that :) Maybe you shouldn't read any threads about it - what do you think?

For countries that has more than 1000 years you will find golden ages, great victories, but also dark times, lost battles, economic crisis, etc. Find me one of the older countries in Europe who has history stuffed only with greatness - it's always moment in time when empire starts to fall. Even USA - very young country has imo last decades of greatness left - it runs the same Gibbon's scenario "fall of an empire" - that was first notieced in Rome and last time with collapse of Soviet Union. Sorry, but end of XXI c. would be decades of Asia.

One of the creators of civ4 (I'm not sure if it was Alex Mantzaris) said civ is game about empires - the countries that dominated region (military, culturaly, economicly, etc.) during some period of time.

And Poland for sure built status of an empire in XV - XVII c. (with golden age in in XVI c.) that played the cards in central and eastern europe - and it has nothing to do with nationalism - it's just fact not blind looking on history. It was biggest christian country in that time, opened for different cultures, religions and nations, wich produced this way own interesting culture. Prussia wich became mayor power later in Europe (that was turned into Germany) was for many years our vassal, (earlier known as Teutonic Order was conquered by joined forces of Poland and Lithuania - last weekend it was 600th anniversary of Grunwald (Tannenberg) Battle. We even occupied Russia for couple of years putting fake Tzar on the throne,. - It's an argument for those that thinks that Polish History can be summed up in 8 words: 'Being constantly beat up by Russians and Germans'. Rzeczpospolita was one of the first democracies in Europe. Famous British historician Norman Davies (you won't call him polish nationalist?) would explain it better:

Yes, because Gibbon is the be-all-and-end-all of historians. Jeez.

You may not agree with him or respect his works, but fall of each empire we knew had the same (or very similliar) pattern wich he found:
- economic crises often caused by wars and military operations, sometimes plagues, or like it happens now by greed of banking establishment or rareity of strategic resources.
- lack of expansions - costs (also in humans) causes to stop expansion of countries - and the extended borders and current military operations ruind seconomy further.
- decadence of elites and nobles. Lack of morality.
- changes in demographics - change of classes, increased poverty, changes of dominant religions, ethnicity etc.
