Ank06 - 3CC Conquest

Bag o' tricks, indeed.

:goodjob:

Got it.

Play tomorrow.

Any ideas?

The Gallic Swords are expensive, but I'd keep building them. The Colossus will give us a nice commerce bump.

Looks like I'll be back in time for you guys to build me up a stack of Gallics to invade someone with.;)

Nice trading bugs!

end quoth

Well, maybe.

750BC
As always, no changes needed.

Barbarian horsemen gallop out of SE

T1 730BC
Mongols-Nada
Shaka buys our WM for WM/TM/7g
Arabs are broke and greedy.
Germans are just plain broke.
Carthage buys our WM for WM/TM/18g
Aztecs are almost broke so sell him TM for WM/4g
Abe is like the Germans.

Our near monopoly on Currency isn't worth much but after rereading SirB's log, to wit,
"I can get CoL, Philosophy, and MM. We pull the trigger on that one.
I sell Currency to Shaka for 61g and WM.
I sell Col to Carthage for 87G & TM
I sell CoL to America for WM & 69G.
Sell Col to Mongolia for worker & 4G.
Germany and Azteca are poor and stupid. " , I now understand why :)

In my peregrinations I note Shaka has no iron :hmm:, a little map reading however shows he has an unconnected lode outside of Bapedi.

Upgrade a warrior at Entremont.

T2 710
Entremont grows and lux tax goes up to prevent disorderly conduct.
GS whacks a Gepid horseman outside Lugdunum and returns to town.
Take 7g and WM from the Mongols for WM
Take 6g/TM/WM from Shaka for WM. Shaka now has Construction and here's his offer:

GreedyShaka710.jpg

Not any better than the Arabs

Get 5g/WM/TM from Bismarck for WM

Carthage won't contibute to the Celtic Geography Society Fund.
Aztec still broke.

Abe also has Construction now and here is his offer:

GreedyAbe710.jpg

T3 690
Gepid horseman moves away from Lugdunum. GS and archer move towards Gepid camp on coast.

Nothing learned, Took 2g and a WM off Monte for WM

Zulu start Great Wall

T4 670
GS whacks another Gepid horseman
Arabs now have Literature.
Otherwise, nothing learned, nothing earned.

T5 650
America start Pyramids/Arabs start GreatLib
Carthage has Polytheism and here's his offer:

Hannibal_Poly650.jpg

If he peddles it around for some more dough maybe we can get a better price for Currency.

Arabs finish Pyramids and start Great Wall and enter the MA
so,

Ack650.jpg

To be continued...

T6 630
Polytheism is known to most, and Literature to some.

Shaka will sell Lit for 120g, but there isn't enough money among the rest to justify the deal.

Archer hits the Gepid camp and slays a warrior,

Gepid horsemen take on Braveheart the Swordsman and after slaying seven he goes down fighting.

And...

Colussus630.jpg

Aztecs start the GreatLight.

Americans start Great Wall

Zulu start GreatLib.

T7 610
Let's see what we can do about tech starting with the Mongols

Swap Philosophy and 5gpt to Mongols for Polytheism.

Everybody else is wearing new hats, so it's time to pull out all the stops and get Construction. Crank up spending on science to see if we can't pull the price down in a couple of turns and empty the treasury to mitigate barbarian thefts.

T8 590
Build a colony on the furs at Alesia as the garrisons are going to be pulled soon to hit the Zulu at Intombe and Bapedi.

Archer runs away from horde of Gepid horseman.

Upgrade two warriors at Lugdunum to cope with Gepid horsemen.

T9 570
Assemble the Zulu ExFor on grasslands of Alesia (2 swords, a single regiment of horse and a battery consisting of a single catapault).

Freshly minted GS's at Lugdunum flawlessly execute Operation Whack the Barbarians killing two (didn't get their names, though)and no casualties .

There are three Marcomanni horsemen heading for Entremont.

Zulu ExFor augmented by GS from Entremont which is now building a spear for barbarain defense.

Workers at Lugdunum take cover.

Gepid horse at Lugdunum promotes a GS to vet and the people celebrate by building the second storey on the palace.

Dorothy panics:

DottiePanics570.jpg

Add two workers to Lugdunum to cut the deficit.

There are 6 Macromanni horsemen in the moutains east of Entremont and two in the mountains SE of Lugdunum. There is a reg GS fortified on the iron mine N of Lugdunum to keep the barbs off and Lugdunum will finish a spear in three, about the time the barbs will hit again

Barbarians550.jpg

Zulu ExFor is poised and ready to hit Intombe. Shaka has no iron, yet.

ZuluExFor550.jpg

Treasury will hit deficit in one, just in time for barbarian attacks at Entremont and or Lugdunum. Turning down the science spending will put us in the black again.

Now that we have a near complete WM, we can see what our options are.

We could very quickly roll over the Mongols and the Germans.

Although we have three expansionist civs to our west, namely Zulus, Arabs and Americans. The Zulu are going to be a tough nut to crack in the AA with the Impi. We should perhaps try to foment some wars between civs to slow their development.

How about this idea? We declare war on Arabia and pull America and Zululand in on our side. That will have all three expansionists devoting their production towards each other. We could then eliminate the Mongols and Germans and be able to focus our efforts in one direction...west.

On second thought... If Shaka doesn't have iron bring out the :hammer:

Sound thinking. The Impi (1.2.2) is not much of threat against Gallics(3.2.2), though. They may be quick but they are vulnerable to other fast attack and I would rather face them alone, then Imps and Swords once he gets his iron hooked up.

Perhaps a limited war with Zulu to confirm our hold on the furs, to deny them the iron at Bapedi (for a while anyway), and extort a tech or so. Then and aim the Westerners at the Arabs and take on the Mongols and the Germans.

@Bugsy,

 that is funny. I am a classic hunt and peck typist. I use my index fingers for letters and I use my thumb for the space bar. So I'm typing with three fingers.

Got it. Are you saying I get to start some wars?

[dance]

I have to agree about the Zulu. We will lose some Gallics, but not too many. I usually have no problem rolling over Spears with Swords, maybe a few losses.

I like the plan of hitting Zulu as quickly as we can to cripple/kill them. Now, do we want to keep it a small war just to extort some techs or do we want to through some MAs in and go for the kill while they're weak?

I will play later tonight (after Kill Bill vol 2!) and will go with what discussion moves me most then.

How far you take the war will be your call. If things go madly, you may want to sue for peace as soon as possible. If you roll over the Zulu, then it may go for quite a while.

At a minimum I think you need to raze Intombe and Bapedi. That should be goal #1. Goal #2 should be to get a tech out of Shaka in a peace deal.

We really have made the colussous. [dance] Really, as i started it, i doubt it would survive the next players preturn ;). And even less that we could finish it before the aztecs. Great that we have it, its like a demo city in our empire.

I think the idea of the war against zulu and the wars between the expo civs should be mixed. Lets attack the zulu and try to get the others onto them also. Will reduce our losses and hamper their expansion/buildup. Anyway, we should go to war fast to get enough to get some good out of our GS.

I just thought of this, the first victory with a GS triggers a GA, so be prepared. IIRC Republic isn't available yet, though Monarchy may.

As Celts are religious government changes are not painful, though.

I gotta agree with Bede, whether Monarchy is available or not we should wait for a government change before making war. Between the tile penatly being lifted & the Colossus, that will take away all our money problems for awhile.

I think Monarchy will be our government of choice for this game: We don't have the empire for Communism & we need large cities so Fued is out. Plus I think we'll be able to make a bunch of short painful wars to the AI's and rely on pointy stick research after a bit so there goes Democracy(Republic stopped being a feasible goverment in CQC IMHO, I detest the new changes.)

I hate to be the one to put a damper on the current trend, but I'm a bit concerned with the upcoming war against Shaka. More specifically with the Gallics vs Impi match up: 3vs2 isn't my idea of a battle swayed in our favor although the few cats will help a bit, at best we'll kill 2 impis for every gallic we lose(and even that's highly improbable with the terrain bonueses & if they've built some walls). Add to this the single greatest strenght of the Gallic(their ability to retreat) is offset by the impi. Not to mention that Gallics cost 2.5x as much as Impis & they probably have 3x the cities we do.

We can still pull it off to meet our goals, we just have to decide what those goals are before we start the war & keep Gallic losses to a bear minimum. Otherwise we're fighting a stalemate, we may raze a couple easily replaced cities, but we're wiping out our army & burning our GA to fund a war that's going nowhere.

My $.02

[edit- but then again this is all without looking at the save in over a week so take it with a grain of salt.;)]

Sorry, no turns tonight. Too tired after the movie and going straight to bed. Tomorrow's a long day and all, but afterwards I will have time to get some turns in.

Also, I want to hear some more debates of War Now vs. War After Gov't Change before I play. Even though my war dance has been dampered. :(

Nice turns Bede. :goodjob:

Seems like we're gonna have some bloody wars soon... I'd attack someone with worse defensive units, though... but Shaka looks like he's wanting some :hammer:

Good luck pindicator.

The Khan has made some good points, pindicator, especially the one about the cost of a Gallic vs an Imp.

Now that I think about it the worst thing that could happen has greater consequences than the the best thing that could happen until we make the government change. Sorry to rain on the victory parade.

BTW Gengis, it's a PTW game :)

I knew that.

Sorry guys, I'm goign to need a skip this weekend. All the stuff planned for today took longer than expected, and tomorrow I have to bust out my English skills and type me a paper among other things. What's up with that RL taking all my time, anyway?
