Anno Domini for Civ IV

There is a section in the units thread about Greek units. I'm not sure how many are in the thread, but some skinning and nif editting was done already.
Thanks, I'd seen those - but I'd like to have a go too ;) !!

It's always good to have placeholder units so you can release the mod sooner and then backfill your own units later. That way we can play it sooner. ;)

I could do with an ancient archery range, woodelf, if you fancy a challenge ;) . It'll be the Coritani unique building and have an advantage for the archery units built there.

That sounds like a good challenge. Is there a CivIII example or pic anywhere? I found a good "thatch" texture that I hope to use of roofing now.

To see your expressions, the R8XFT 'LeaderLook', the best combarable LH artwork in that dept the community has witnessed, has been a amazing spectacle. I miss hearing your posts in the forum where your name turned to gold. Gone now, making a new gen Exited to see your name on anything. They desereve your magneficent skills and generous work as much as we did . Im only sorry I never show more appreciation when you graced are Civ3 Forums/ Peace man

Wow, thanks!! What an accolade!!

@woodelf - I notice that the Fall from Heaven mod has an archery range, plus some other cool sounding buildings which could make their way into Anno Domini. I'll download it and have a look ;) .

That's a good idea Rob. We have some fantastic artists working on that mod, plus some nice models we've borrowed from others as well. There are some buildings that jojoweb imported from Morrowind that work nicely too.

I'm cracking on with my leaderhead conversions. So far, I've finalised 23 leaderheads and there's a further 18 that are Firaxis animated leaderheads. By and large, they're staying as the people they are in the game; the most drastic changes are that I'm using Isabella as Theodora of Byzantium and Ghengis Khan as Attila the Hun. I guess you want to check out the new artwork, so I've attached it to this post.

We now need to start thinking about unique units, leader traits and unique buildings. The aggressive, charismatic, creative, expansive, financial, imperialistic, organised, protective, philosophical and spiritual traits will work more or less how they do in the epic game; there will be agricultural (+1 food in tile that already gives 3 food), builder (works like epic game industrious), industrious (faster workers) and seafaring (ship bonus + extra trade route). The thing to decide now is who gets what in terms of traits, unique buildings and unique units. For the purposes of this thread, you can only talk in general terms about the buildings and units as you've not seen a tech tree yet! However, you'll know that, for example, the Spartans will probably need a strong hoplite as their UU and an advanced form of barracks for their building. With respect to traits, there's 91 combinations of the 14 traits if there's to be two given to each leader (which is what I'd like). There's more traits than leaders at the moment, so I want to ensure that no combinations are duplicated.

A brief summary of the civs so far is below; some of the leaderheads haven't been finalised yet. Please remember that this list is going to be added to, so don't worry if your favourite civ isn't in there yet!

Rob, did you check the FfH2 buildings to see what you could borrow? And do you have a list that will be needed (other than the CivIII listing)?

I've not checked this out yet, I need to download that mod and have a good look at it. However, I have added Peisistratos as an alternative leader for Athens. Six new leaderheads are available and the full preview is attached to this post. I will crack on with the other aspects of the mod when I get a chance to sit down and concentrate on them ;) .

Looking good Rob.

I have no idea if this has a place in your mod, but I made a wheelwright found here.

I posted this to the Medieval Mod... but thought you might think this a good idea for the Norman UB:

Just thought of another Unique Building...

If you're doing the Normans, I think Norman Castle would be a good UB. They built them all over England to consolidate their conquest...

Possible benefit - I thought that some addition to culture would be good for consolidating conquests. I thought of a sort of neat variation for this UB... how about a mini-culture bomb similar to great artist. Instead of giving a culture boost over time, like one or two points a turn, Norman Castles upon completion give a immediate culture boost of, for example, 100 points (or whatever would be deemed reasonable). So instead of accruing culture over an extended time, the immediate culture boost would consolidate the conquest much more rapidly.

Norman Castles would take the place of normal castles (or whatever structure the mod has in its place).

A couple of more UB's...

Eire could use an improved Monastary. Perhaps with greater culture.

Saxons - West Saxons, Wessex, under Alfred the Great created the Burghs. Very important fortified towns that helped turn the tide against the vikings. Replace Walls... perhaps exp or promotion benefit to units constructed in the city.

As for leaders, perhaps Alfred would be good for the Saxons (although at in the 8th or 9th century, he might be too late for this mod). Certainly, he would be Protective and perhaps Organized or Charismatic. He'd be a good candidate for a leader being the only English King with the designation "Great".

I was thinking about Alfred the Great for the Saxons earlier today actually...

Some really good ideas for UBs, though I might not use the walls one for the Saxons purely because there'll be other civs where "walls" seems the most obvious choice, so I don't want there to be too many civs with modified walls as their UB. I was thinking of looking back at Plotinus' Rood scenario (which is excellent, by the way, if you haven't played it and have Civ III, take a look). This has some excellent Saxon buildings, so I was thinking of taking some ideas from this mod.

woodelf's wheelwright could be the UB for the Iceni, causing a bonus for chariots - perhaps replacing barracks (which a few UBs no doubt will).

Incidently, you referred to the timeline of the mod - to clarify, it's from the dawn of time up to around the time of the Magna Carta, c1215. That's why the Huns are in instead of the Mongols (as the Ghenghis Khan leaderhead is being used as Attila).

Just thought of an Eire UU that's a little different from the usual:

Irish Missionary... increased chance to spread religion and/or increased movement and/or not depleted when used to spread religion and/or cheaper to build....etc.

The Irish did, according to certain sources, save western civilization with this unit, after all. And a non-combat UU is an interesting twist.

The Anno Domini website has been relaunched - click on the link on my signature to go there. There are now 91 leaders (most of the leaderhead art is done and can be viewed at the website) so there's one for every combination possible of the 14 traits. I've also put the trait information on the site so that you know what each trait does. There are now 63 civs, which should be enough to be going along with ;) . I've made use of the animated leaderheads and about half-a-dozen reskins, including some modifications I did myself. However, you won't see a leader (original or reskinned) in there more than once. The rest of the art is done by myself.
