Secured another Domination Victory.
This time with the Illyrians. What a great civ they are to play with.
Game Report
Difficulty: Aedile (I think is the same as my standard Monarch level).
Map: Huge, 60% water, large continents.
Company: 14 other civs.
Barbs: Middle setting, forget the name.
If you recall the last game I posted about, that was on an easier level and I didnt see much of the tech tree. This game played out to about 6 techs short of finishing the final age and I had a blast. The Trade Victory was fully on until I crushed someone too easily and lazily plumped for a domination victory.
The Home Base: Started out on what turned out to be the biggest continent in the world. Immediate neighbours were Rome and I got to work on them early, securing the whole of the south after three tough wars. Slingers, then archers did the job on their Tool Age Spearmen. Working north of me, in this order, were Byz, Sparta, Maced and Nubia. Sparta were larger than me until I had totally consumed the Romans
and the Byz. A clash of titans between Sparta and myself saw the giant of our continent decided about 250 turns into the game. Because Sparta had been warring with Macedonia to their north and winning, they had grown large but didnt have many troops, so they lost their cities quickly. Taking Nubia and the whole continent was just a formality after that. Although the Nubians fronted a more diverse army of Lion Warriors (4.2.1), Nubian Archers (3.2.2) and some kind of lame fast one, they were undone by the Hoplite defence of 4 they encountered and were largely slain by the Illyrians Raiders (5.2.1) and Ancient Cavalry (4.2.2) that greeted them.
Once this continent was secure I was sitting with 42% of the land and half the worlds population.
The Illyrian Raider: As a UU this has got to be one of the best out there, in vanilla, conquests or in AD. The amphib ability on a unit with 5 attack when 2 or 3 are the best defenders around is sweet, to put it mildly. Used it to great effect as well. Being seafaring I built lots of Curraghs and had stacks of them loaded with Raiders and some of the best defenders I could muster (10 ships total, 15 Raiders and 5 Hoplites). Whilst the land forces drove up the middle of the mainland into the heart of Sparta, I waited these boats out on the coast. When Spartan units were scrambled to deal with the advancing army, I simply swept the curraghs up the coast line, sometimes leaping far north to catch some resource city, and took multiple cities which were not expecting it. The same happened to Nubia. Raiders make the process of taking out enemy cities much easier and far more enjoyable, with plenty of new strategies to employ. Nice work!
The rest of the world: Whilst all this was going on the Irish and the Isoko were growing very large indeed but nowhere near as large as the Illyrians, who were furiously manifesting their destiny as described above. Isoko were the largest having conquered Arabia with their UU. Eire was busy conquering others (India, Iceni, Minoa and starting on Saba) to challenge them. The Norse were third on this continent and building some nice wonders. It was they who were exploring the seas out of this bunch.
Silks and The Trade Victory: Upon hitting Silk Trading I had already seen that there were only two continents. I had full maps of them both with not much water left to explore in between. But, much to my dismay, I couldnt find silks anywhere on the map. I started freaking out. Is this a bug? Have I missed something I need to research or build? I checked everything and the conclusion was a dark one theres
another mystery civ out there with the silks and Im yet to find them. And so it was. Boats were sent out on reckless missions into the unknown. To all points of the compass they went; many were lost, many found nothing, but nowhere was there to be found any silk. In the end it was right on my doorstep all of it guarded by the Parthians, who were simply tucked away on a miniscule island miles from anyone else. Ships were scrambled with Raiders and the Parthians 5 cities were gone in 2 turns.
Work began immediately on the Silk Road. As soon as I was able to I build the different Trade Merchant parts, I built them. I even traded with Isoko (no.2 in power) for olive oil to build that one. I continued apace with these merchants, acquiring things like dyes, ivory and gems through intercontinental conquest until I had built 6 or 7 of them by end game. It was a grand and engrossing project. However, 3 trade merchants remained as those techs (Banking, Naval Trading (?) and Agricultural Revolution) still needed to be researched. The wars that I got embroiled in on the other continent sure led to me acquiring other luxuries but it also gained me the necessary 66% of population / land to gain the dom victory.
Military Notes: In the main deciding phases of moving toward the domination, basically war on the other continent during the heart of the game, my military was made up of the following:
Fyrd Spearmen in defence (def 7). In attack: Auxila (att 7), Cataphracts (6), Longbowmen (7) and big stacks of Trebuchets (bom 10). Between 3 and 6 armies at any one time made up exclusively of these attacking troops. I noticed that it was only when the stacks of artillery were put into place that the cities really fell. Others, even those with armies knocking at their door, found it hard to take down cities with 7 defence and the size bonus. Trebuchets are well balanced and very much necessary in this game. And they are effective.
Props on the Wonders: I loved the selection and effects of the Treaty of Kadesh as a GW and especially liked the reference to the UN building in the pedia entry. The Double Harbour is rapidly becoming a wonder that I get addicted to (yah I know Ive got a Seafaring fetish). And Epicurus Garden is a legend of a wonder too. Great choices of wonders, succinct and informative pedia entires, and the combined effects of things like science and happiness make them very appealing indeed.
Thanks for another great game!
