Another SE immortal game

This all is extremely exciting and educational.....
But WTH is "SE"!?
:(

SE = Specialist Economy
CE = Cottage Economy
GME = Great Merchant Economy (the newest thing)
HE = Hybrid Economy

WFYABTA = We Fear You Are Becoming To Advanced

You can only trade for a certain amount of techs before the other civs will have all their techs in red on the trade screen. When you mouse over them, it will say, "We Fear You Are Becoming To Advanced".

Impressive play so far Jihe. This is really a purely SE variant with only scientist being run. Why not devote 1 city to merchants to get some extra money and some money from trade routes which would keep you a float a lot more? Will be following this closely.

Jihe: please, can you post the initial save, if you have it.

(If already posted, where please, as I searched and didn't find it).

Best regards,

I am already doing that. Specialists breakdown:

Delhi: 7 scientists
Madras: 4 scientists
Bangalore: 6 Scientists
Calcutta: 4 merchants (has market, grocer, building bank)
Tartar: 4 merchants
Pasagardae: 3 merchants (building grocer)
Bombay 1 merchant
Persepolis: 1 engineer (I still hope for a GE someday, maybe for SoL).

no trade routes though, everyone is merchantile.

As for agressive trading, I am sure you would all make the same trades since all those
techs are vital, except maybe Music, but that opens up cavalries if I need them. I don't
really understand the WFYABTA system, but I am under the impression that a civ that
hasn't met you doesn't know about the trades you made before, so I think that's
why Saladin is still trading. He's a bit of a tightass usually.

Impressive play so far Jihe. This is really a purely SE variant with only scientist being run. Why not devote 1 city to merchants to get some extra money and some money from trade routes which would keep you a float a lot more? Will be following this closely.

Fed:
Unfortuantely I am stupid and lost the initial save by starting a new game (this game is taxing :)). Earliest I have is a save from the end of the second turn.
If you want you can ask someone to use the worldbuilder to put the settler back to the starting position but I cannot make up for the one turn loss

I decide not to wait for upgrades and go for Thebes straight away. Time is of the essense and
Alex still only has longbows, CR3 trebs deal with them well enough.

1420AD: Do we get a GE? Nope, another GS, settle in Delhi. That's 27 extra beakers a turn.

Civ4ScreenShot0169.JPG

1440AD: Captured and razed Thebes. It overlaps too much with Tarsus, I don't want to waste units
defending it, and I just want to hurt Alex as much as possible as quickly as possible. It does
feel wasteful razing a size 15 city.

Civ4ScreenShot0172.JPG

1450AD: Our forces need to heal and upgrade, Alex has lot of men that can strike Tarsus next turn,
so I get a ceasefire. Arbela comes out of revolt, switch to Slavery + OR for whipping. Whip
coutthouse in Arbela and markets/grocers elsewhere. Our research is not missing a beat under Slavery.

Civ4ScreenShot0176.JPG

Civ4ScreenShot0181.JPG

1460AD: Need money desperately to upgrade, so I give map to Saladin for 50 and Liberalism to Alex for 140.
Seems like a good deal to Alex but I doubt he's reasearching Liberalism now and it won't help him in anyway.
Brennus and Isabella already know it and Saladin doesn't even have Education so Alex can't trade it. Meanwhile
that's 2 more cannons for us.

1470AD: Bombay seemed to be producing cannons rather slowly, then I realised I've been a ****** and forgot
about the GG. Setup military academy in Bombay. And there it is: 21 base hammer + 150% = 51, a level 2
cannon every 2 turns.

Civ4ScreenShot0184.JPG

Tarsus comes out of revolt, improving our finance immediately. Finally we break even at 100% gold.

Civ4ScreenShot0190.JPG

1480AD: Rifling done, start Scientific Methods. Isabella already has it and she always goes for the free
scientist from Physics so I am not counting on that. Losing the GL will be harsh but Scientific Methods
opens up Biology and Physics -> Artillery.

Civ4ScreenShot0191.JPG

What is this? It tuns out Alex is getting horses from Brennus.I think long and hard about this.
Cavs are bad for us since pinch cavs beat recruit rifles and they will slaughter our cannons in the
open with their mobility and combat bonus. We had monopoly on Steel and Brennus seemed to be flying
away, but I think if we take out Alex now we will win the game. So I cut this deal.

Civ4ScreenShot0192.JPG

With that I declare on Alex again. Let's see if he can deal with a cannon every 2 turns and a rifle every
turn.

1490AD: Alex comes at Tarsus with a medieval stack. Fiesty, I like it. However not much of a tactitian
as he lands his stack next to our invasion force. Promote a couple of cannons to combat 2, and let's just
say you don't want to be in Alex's shoes, lossless victory.

Civ4ScreenShot0196.JPG

Religious spying shows more cavs. What the hell?

Civ4ScreenShot0197.JPG

A look at the diplomacy sceen says it all.

Civ4ScreenShot0199.JPG

Needless to say I am furious at this stage. What part of cancelling trades don't you understand, Brennus?
When an AI asks a human to cancel trades, all resource trades are off so I assume it works the same
between AI's. Well apparently not. This is one of the things that bugs me, by all means give AI's research
and production bonuses, but don't make them diffferentiate between human players and other AI's. It just
give you the feeling that all the AI's are conspiring against the human player. I often see trades between
AI's like iron to Rome for cows, which will never happen to a human player.

So we've just given Steel to the most advanced civ for free............... Fortunately in my rage I still
looked a bit closer and see that all of Alex's sugar plantations are right on the battlefield. I pillage
next turn and no more cavs for Alex. Disaster averted.

Isabella declares on Saladin. Good.

1500AD: back to CS + Theocracy.

1515AD: Captured Mycenae. Another GS from Bangalore, save for bulbing Physics. Then this:

Civ4ScreenShot0207.JPG

Haven't you screwed us enough already Brennus? He lands 2 cavs and a treb next to Tartar. Fortunately
Tartar has recovered to size 6 from the whippings and has a barrack. Draft a rifle, upgrade a mace
to rifle, draft a rifle in Calcutta and move towards Tartar. Drafting is really the nutz.

Civ4ScreenShot0210.JPG

1520AD: Brennus pillages farms, but my rifles beat both cavs.

1525AD: Alex mass upgrades to rifles, I am not too concerned since CR3 cannons cut through rifles. I am
way more scared about his cats and trebs. Once Alex mass upgrades to cannons our offensive will come
to a halt. I will be burning scientists for Physics to open up Artilleries to prepare for this.

Civ4ScreenShot0213.JPG

1530AD: Scientific Method done, burn GS for Physics.

Got to go now, more to come soon.

that Brennus deal is totally wrong... Ivory and horses for just two happy resources? Come on! The AI would never trade those two to a human for such a lowball price... *sigh*

Good luck running through Alex before he hits cannons. Alex is a military nut and once he goes into military mode, it's ... insane. It's why I prefer to have Alex as my pet dog than as a victim.

By the way, any idea who the last civ in this game is? Or did you play a 6 civ game?

1535AD: Isabella gets to Physics first. We capture Echbatna. Athens looks to have too many rifles to crack.
I plan to pillage those towns to slow Alex's research then
maybe come back with artilleries.

Civ4ScreenShot0222.JPG

1540AD: Once again the AI moves units away from capital. That's it, we go straight for Athens.

Civ4ScreenShot0223.JPG

1545AD: GG born. I get an instructor in Persepolis amd switch to Free Religion for better diplomatic relations.
Bad move, forgot that we lose religious spying, oh well we'll be back in 5 turns.

1550AD: Education and Chemistry to Saladin for Military Tradition + 50, start building a few cavs in
Bombay for quick reinforcement.

1560AD: Battle of Athens, no contest really. Cannons just dominate this era. Meanwhile in Echbatna our defending
rifle lost to an elephant, damn it. I can't get reinforcement there in time and we will probably lose it
next turn, so I get a ceasefire.

Civ4ScreenShot0233.JPG

Civ4ScreenShot0234.JPG

1565AD: GS in Delhi, discovers Physics, research Biology. Don't think I need Artillery now.

1570AD: Reinforcemnets arrive, back to Theocracy and declare again.

1580AD: razed Knossos. Alex comes at Arbela with 3 Gallons. Draft a rifle there, upgrade a mace to grenadier
and send a cav that way.

1585AD: I am very glad Alex is wasting his seige units like this. We gather enough forces to wipe them out.
Once again drafting is MVP.

Civ4ScreenShot0244.JPG

Turns out Alex went for Steam Power instead of Steel, he's gone now.

Civ4ScreenShot0245.JPG

1605AD: Captured Sparta, lost a few cannons to a CG2 rifle on a hill, but wiped out Alex's navy.

Civ4ScreenShot0246.JPG

Pretty unhappy lot we are, don't think a CE could have kept the war going, WW has little effect on us.

Civ4ScreenShot0394.JPG

1635AD: Biology done. I research Communism since I thought the city upkeep was getting high, however this is
a mistake as the one specialist per city easily add up to more than the distance upkeep. Did not swtich
to State Property for a long time. However it has trade value so not a complete waste of time.

1640AD: razed Gordium

1660AD: Brennus lands 2 cavs and a cannon next to Echbatna. I get corcky and attack, his cavs won a few
lucky fights, I had only 2 defenders in Echbatna.

1665AD: Brennus promotes cavs and razed Echbatna, damn it. Oh well it was in the bad position anyway, one
away from coast. Another GG born, instructor in Bombay.

Civ4ScreenShot0261.JPG

Captured Argos and Alex capitiulates. Finally I get a look at the other continent and met Mehmet.

Look at his starting position. He lost in 4000BC.

Civ4ScreenShot0392.JPG

I think the game is won now, the other continent has crap land and AI's not trading with each other. We
are too big, too fertile. Just have to get a defense up and we will cruise to spaceship. With war weariness
gone our population will skyrocket under Biology, and so will everything else. The AI's GNP isn't going anywhere.

Civ4ScreenShot0265.JPG

Switch to Slavery + OR to get infrastructures up in newly acquired cities.
Start Ironwork in Mycenae, Westpoint in Bombay.

I guess we abuse the globe a bit :)

Civ4ScreenShot0393.JPG

I play through till the end, but from now on it is all acedemic, just going through the motions.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/106707/P_AD-1665.CivWarlordsSave

1975AD: Communism done, Artillery for defense.
1680AD: GM in Madras
1690AD: Back to CS + Free Religion, Brennus switch to Police State. Yikes.
1695AD: Communism to Brennus for peace, Communism + Constitiution to Isabella for Steam Power. Isabella is
Pleased, soon we get open border with her and send GM to Madrid for 1900.
1730AD: Artillery done, Railroad for more defence.
1735AD: GM in Calcutta. Sent to Madrid for another 1900 gold. I count 15 artilleries, some with barrage 3.
That's a world of pain, we are not going to invade unless we ge some nukes.
1750AD: Westpoint completed. I feel safe as a rock behind level 3 artilleries and railroad.
1765AD: Railroad done. Electricity
1780AD: Ironwork completed in Mycenae.
1785AD: GS in Delhi.
1790AD: Elctricity done, Radio. Mycenae work on Broadway.
1809AD: Radio done. Combustion.
1810AD: Our cities are suffiiently big now that a switch to State Property is worth it.
1813AD: GS in Bangalore, burn both on Computers.
1817AD: Combustion done, Computers.
1820AD: Broadway done, Start Eiffel Tower
1823AD: Computers dones, labs everywhere.
1827AD: Economic
1829AD: Corporation
1837AD: Assembly Line, factories and power plants everywhere. Brennus and Isabella both building SS parts now.
We are comfortably ahead in tech.
1842AD: Eiffel Tower done
1844AD: A city of Mehmed has been captured by barbs, hahaha ,go barbs!
1848AD: Industrialism, GS in Pasargadae.
1860AD: Plastics
1866AD: Rocketry, complete Rock and Roll, start Apollo Program. takes 12 turns, GS for Fission
1872AD: Fission. Brennus sends a couple of destroyers to check us out, I show him a stack of artilleries and
tanks, he gets the idea and buggers off.
1878AD: GM in Tartar, 2500 gold to Madrid.
1884AD: Robotics
1890AD: Satellite, Apollo done, start SS parts everywhere. Space elevator in Mycenae.
1894AD: GS in Persepolis for Fibre Optics
1896AD: Fibre Optics
1906AD: Fusion, GE rushed space elevator. Brennus delares on Isabella!
1912AD: Refrigeration
1914AD: Isabella sends destroyers near our shores, even thogh she's at war, still show her some artilleries and
mech inf.
1921AD: Genetics
1924AD: Ecology
1927AD: Isabella builds UN, we win election
1930AD: Brennus builds Manhattan. Briefly thought about pausing spaceship to nuke Brennus for revenge, but
can't be bothered.
1931AD: Lauch spaceship.

Final thoughts:
Never built a cottage, never researched Hunting(!), Democracy(!) and the usual suspects. It turns out the
map is perfect for SE, tons of food, zero happiness. Our biggest piece of luck was the opponents in the other
continent. it would have been much more difficult if they were peaceful builders, well at least we wouldn't
have faced Gandhi :)
In some sense our game plan actually mirrors the CE in that we setup a research center at the captital. When
the cottage player gets Bureuacracy, the SE player bulbs Education and quickly gets Oxford. When the
cotttage player gets Oxford, the SE player gets Representation. And Biology plays the part of Emacipation.
Of course eventually CE gets out more beakers but as you saw our research was unaffected by war or civics,
and not needing Bureaucracy opens up drafting, which in conjunction with globe is the single most
broken mechanic in the game. The game is won during the midgame when we get a tech lead thanks to
research boom and GS bulbing, with cannons the unit of choice.
I feel that I wasted the great location of the capital a bit this game. I never really utillised the
great production of the capital except the initial axe rush. The SE really only needs 2 or 3 good food
resources in the capital and shines for mediocre starting positions.
There are a lot of variations and possibilities for a SE, cottages are not everything. Usually you will have
no problem winning Liberalism, then you can get Gunpowder or even Chemistry if you think you can take the
Pyramids by force. You don't even need to adopt CS. However I wouldn't want to do SE for a huge map since
micromanaging gets very tiring. One of the most annoying thing is that artists will be assigned in a city
with low culture under CS everytime the population grows, with the pop fluctuation from draafting and
whipping, you can imagine the amount of mm every turn.

Anyway thanks for reading if you get this far :)

Thanks man, it was your thread that made me realised there are a lot of ways to play and start to experiment.

I've been a long-time lurker here, not very much of a poster except to ask very technical questions.

Let me tell you that its now YOUR thread that makes ME realize there are a lot of ways to play and start to experiment.

I will go through and read Acid's as well, if it drove you to make something this informative, it must be one hell of a read.

I thank you for taking the time to put all this to keyboard, it made a great hour or so of reading for me after a long night of work. Bravo on your win!

Very interesting game and very interesting thread!

This "absolutely" SE game shows new strategies; not so academic.of course.

Best regards,

This game showed once again that properly played out SE is not weaker in any way than CE, or any other combination thereof.
I want to know what idiot voted 1/5 - another CE player refusing to acknowledge brilliance when he sees it, or still living in denial. ^_~

Nicely done.

SE is a valid choice early in the game for me. But I always switch to Hybrid and in the end CE when I reach Representation and Democracy.

Seems I need to see the SE through once.:)
