Antonius Block's Star Spangled Slaughter-European Team

Thanks Control freak. I never knew I had the program called Paint but I found it on my computer and its a whole new world for me.

Here's our territory at the end of my first twenty turns.

Contacts! yes!
We can trade Ceremonial to Korea for The Wheel and 10 gold. This will save us 4 turn on research.

Who the hell is so fond of irrigating? We need mines!
Agreed! we need more mines. I have irrigated 2 cow squares so Teo can grow faster. There were already 3 irrigated grassland tiles at the Capital irrigated when I got the game.

Banzai!

Haha, I am the one who is an irrigation freak. Comes from having people shout at me in other threads/games that I wasn't irrigating enough fast enough!

Thanks for the screenie.

How about we have some discussion before we plow ahead? There have been suggestions by players who played that we're done by the next player. What are our goals/stragegy. Are we going for a dense build, optimal, ICS? Are we military minded or in build mode first? If we don't all focus on one mission, the game will be much harder and less fun than it could be.

Some initial comments.
It sounds like we have some great food sources: wheat, three cattle and four flood plain in our 3 cities. This is awesome since our trait is industrious we can make lots of workers and take advantage of this. If all the food is in one or two towns then they may or may not need an early granary. We defintely don't want to irrigate grassland because the extra food is wasted in despotism. But irrigating our food bonus tiles is good and must be done.

The pyramids on any large continent is always great but its a lot of sheilds to give up from our captiol this early. And what happens if we get beaten out. What do we do with those 390sheilds? Building it in our capitol means we can't switch to palace as a placeholder until we get literature or some other wonder-enabler.

Why would we be using entertainers (worthless) instead of a little luxury tax? We need the sheilds from our citizens. Gold isn't worth that much in despotism.

Is there a huge mountain range to the south? How wide is it. Can we work it from both sides or are there areas that will have no grassland in the city limits to allow those tiles to be worked? If so, remember that any town founded in such an area will only be able to support 1 worker on a mountain or two workers on hills. We can pack them tightly together. Of course these would be the low priority cities.

We've met two civs, right? What did the Koreans have when we met them? How far are they from us. Do we have enough military? Especially with us building the pyramids already.

Well, enough rambling from me for now. Just want to get a little chatter going BETWEEN TURNS. Did anyone read through the MOW thread started by Charis. Those guys are all really good and they did a ton of discussion (arguing even) to get everyone on the same page. They made their Deity game seem like Monarch.

BTW. If my comments are annoying, just say the word and I'll relurk.

EDIT: Antonius Block@
In despotism, any tile that has three or more of food, sheilds gets reduced by 1. Grassland has 2 food. Irrigated it would have 3. In despotism, irrigated grassland is 3 or more food so it gets reduced by 1. There for in despotism grassland, whether irrigated or not has 2 food. It's wasted worker turns to irrigate in despotism. Now for the wheat, it would add 2 food to the grassland for a total of 4. Despotism reduces this to three. Irrigating it brings it back to four (the penalty is already paid). So irrigating food bonus squares is ok and actually required in Despotism.

Good points ControlFreak!
Make that five flood plain!

Our Capital is size 5 and will finish the Pyramids in 35. It will grow in 6 turns.
F11 shows that all other capitals are size 1.
F7 shows us building the only wonder.
I think the Pyramids are guaranteed.

Arabia has 4 cities, has all techs we know + the wheel and mysticism. They are to the far west.
Korea has 4 cities, has the wheel but lacks ceremonial burial and masonry. No cities seen.

The mountain range is very large, but has hills in the middle and a flood plain

I think we should settle the fertile land around us first.
A scout has reveals Ivory between us and the Arabs. We should settle there too.
When this is done I think we should crush the Arabs and/or settle the jungle.

Banzai!

Thanks for the update! It's driving me nuts not being able to see the game.

I'm guessing with the reduced number of civs that we'll have a lot of land to cover. It sounds like the first couple of cities were far apart. I think an optimal city placement would be good for our long term potential. At least get two rings of cities around our capital optimally placed (with a few extra in the hilly/mountainy area. I also think we should be in total builder mode unless the arabs are very close. Let's use the food we have to out expand the AI and grab lots of territory/resources.

Not sure how far the ivory is but we may want to wait on it unless its close. We have silks already and probably won't need much more than that until we stop expanding. Oh, except for the capital since that will be building a wonder, its going to be eating luxuries. we need to get some MP there to help with happiness as much as possible. (That's another problem with building a long term project while all other towns are low in population.)

How about the coastline? are we on a penisula by ourselves? Can we get cities on the coast soon? I think the Collosus is a great wonder. Also, if we're on continents, we may need the GLighthouse to get to the other civs.

Can someone check who we're up against? Go to the spaceship view and then click on the space race button. A list of the civs will appear. We know two already. who are the others?

@Antonius Block

Did you tell Col to subscribe to this thread. If not, he won't be notified of our posts because he hasn't posted here yet.

Oohhh, did I forget to check the Korean on the wheel? sorry!
They didn't have it in turn 9. Do not forget to trade immediatly!

No Control Freak- I will have to pm Col again.

My advise: use the cattle city for settlers and workers. Build more mines!

Agreed.
The worker is currently located on a normal grassland. After the city has build the settler, this tile will no longer be used (especially after the border expands and another BG tile comes in range). We should focus on mining the BG tiles and third cattle first.

We can also mine the irrigated BG tile at the capital to speed the production of the Pyramids.

Maybe we should switch Boston to worker and have it irrigate the flood plains.

Banzai!

I actually think we have too much food for Teohuacattle to use effectively. We could plant a city south of the middle cattle on the river that can share tiles.

We need to get a lot more workers to keep improvements ahead of the growth of Captiol. That means we need a lot more settlers to keep us under our allowed units.

With sedentary barbs and reduced AI, feel free to have settlers unescorted and cities undefended. We won't need much MP because we're going to have to keep the luxury tax high for the Captiol. We don't want to hire worthless entertainers in our wonder city. If we're not maxed on MPs in the Capitol, get another warrior there.

I think we should make a dot map. The grassland is awesome but we need to use it efficiently. Despite strategic advantages of farther out spots, we need to get a lot of towns founded quickly so that means the closer spots have priority.

We should be kick butt in the commerce area. We've got at least 5 gold mountains near our captiol. That means low corruption and high income. I also think building the collosus with the gold hill N on the shore is a big advantage. If we can get this wonder and the scientific wonders there we'd be unstoppable research wise.

Just some thoughts. Any word from Col?

@Banzai: We have two workers now. The 'other' is roading on the lux and connecting all cities to it. This worker should indeed help Boston.

@all: Cattle city has great wheat and sheild. It will mass produce settlers and workers. We can use Boston too to produce workers I think, but I prefer a few scouts more first. I feel comfortable with our 4th or 5th city to produce military.

edit: mess produce => mass produce...... :D

I rarely play expansionist. Are scouts that awesome that we need a 5th or 6th? Their speed advantage will be robbed by the jungle and mountains. We already have 3 or four way out in front that should be meeting everyone. We could use workers more than scouts right now. Both workers and scouts count the same towards the allowed number of units. The potential for free techs is a nice plus to the scout so I understand if the team wants more but I would switch to build a worker instead of another scout. We may not find any more huts. Especially since on sedentary barbs, the but frequency is smaller.

Well, this I where I doubt. Normally when expansionist, I build 5 ot 6 scouts right away. Maybe we are too late anyway now. We do not only want to meet others, we also want to pop huts. There are still quite some!!!!! I popped4 I think.

We need to go for the plains first and then search the jungle. The AI mostly leaves the jungle alone, so we can search there later.

@Stapel
You sound like an expansionist expert. I'll go with your expertise. More Scouts! What do we do with them when we're done popping huts?

I pm'd Col and he will hopefully appear in this thread today to say "got it."

After scouts are done there are two possibile uses for them: disband them in cities to add their few shields to whatever you are building (effective for getting defense in frontier cities), or keep them out in enemy territory as sabotage units against iron/horse connections. Not just the exploit, but I think they can pillage as well. Scouts become inneffective once your home continent is finished.

I agree with you guys, we should make a dot map. Putting all three cows under that one city- I couldn't resist.

I'm just getting in to the glorious world of SG. I'm playing in a deity level two way comptetion too.

?? confused - are we aztec? If so why arent we producing gazillions of jag warriors to rush everything and everyone in sight?

Where are our screenshots? Anyone produced a dotmap yet of where we are planning to place our cities?

I cant download the save. :(

Enough of these grumbles - hi everyone. Someone follows my exploits in GOTM?? Not this month. I lost trying for a 100k victory.
