Any tips or hints you can give an old time player?

Hi all. I just got AC again from the help of you guys. Thanks Ranbir again, for the link.

Well I am installing it now, and hoping it works lol.

So it's been about 8 years since I played this game. Can you guys and gals give this old fart, any tips or hints about playing AC.

This will be like playing for the first time, I am so excited. Funny I found the strat guide for this game, so I will be going through that too.

Ok I just installed the patch that came with the cd. I am just making shure here. It said patch 1.03f, is that the latest patch? Is there any mods as well?

Patch 1.03f isn't the latest. Download and install both the v4.0 update and the Win 2000/XP update from Firaxis. This should patch you to v5.0.

The edition you posted the link to in the other thread comes patched to the latest version. The 1.03 patch is the XP update. I've just installed that version myself and did the same searching to find out what the state of it was as the packaging is not clear at all on the issue. If you have the version you linked to then you are fully patched.

I hope you can clarify, just for my own information, why version 1.03 represents the latest patch for SMAC. According to the readme file in my SMAC folder, the first SMAC patch brought the version number up to 2.0, so v1.03 appears to have been the original release. Subsequent patches increased the version to 3.0, 4.0 and finally 5.0 (which was the Win 2K/XP update). What is the date stamp on your terran.exe? My exe is dated 8/13/2002, which is v5.0. Thanks.

If you download the XP patch the filename is SMAC_Patch_v1.03f.exe. That is the file that the version that Davor said he bought in the other thread includes as the patch. The readme files for the SMAC and SMAX installed from those discs say they include the patches to 4.0 and 2.0 already. Apply the XP patch SMAC_Patch_v1.03f.exe and you are fully patched. That's assuming that the version Davor linked to is the version he actually has, as it is the same version I have just installed. Why they called the XP patch v1.03f and not v5.0 is something I can not answer.

Date on terran.exe installed in that way: 13/08/02, same as yours allowing for date format differences.

Thanks for your reply. I found it very informative. I'd noticed that others who bought the Sold-out version reported they had the version 1.03f update. I thought, for the reasons described in my previous post, that they had an old version. Now I see that the patch labeled 1.03f actually updates them to version 5.0 of SMAC. Thanks again.
