Anybody else going to miss Art Deco?

I like the original better but I don't have a problem with the new one. I wouldn't mind a opportunity to change the UI a la BtS's menu option.

If possible, I would love to have the possibility to change the style back. With a check box or even with a xml entrance.

As Louis, I would like to see an era specific design, though. I asked a question about this, in an older thread already: would it be possible to mod this? Is there any graphic data that can be changed? Or is everything integrated in the DLL and therefore unaccessible?

I'm working on a few solutions.
Z-UI (v4+) might get a set of Menu options once the DLL info (FrontEnd routines) is integrated within SDK features.

I was looking at the Baroque vs Art Deco photos that TheKingOfBigOz posted, and I have a question: right above the mini-map on the Baroque (Gods and Kings) screenshot, there's the little circles that tell info. One of those circles has an image of three beakers next to each other on it. What exactly is that?

They've added a bunch of new notification icons to the game. For example, the notification that your city can fire on an enemy now has its own icon instead of the generic "!" icon. My guess is that the three beakers icon is research agreement related. It's got the laurel wreath that the other diplomacy-related icons have.

The next expansion will feature a Jackson Pollack style.

Looking at the two side by side I prefer the original but in all honesty I couldn't care less. :crazyeye:

I prefer the original too, but it's not that noticeable considering I didn't notice it till you pointed it out

I really liked the nice clean lines and clear font of Art Deco style, but the baroque influence is in the G&K UI is much less visible than I expected, so I don't really mind. Hopefully, there will be an option to switch. BUT, the new title screen for G&K needs to go! I can't stand it!

Haha I won't miss Art Deco the least. The new is much better, imo. It's fancier.
Agree. I prefer the new UI, even if it's still got a bit too much art deco in it for my taste.

Well as all of the architecture students here will know Art Deco and Baroque are two of the most widely used styles of building and are even combined to great effect, heck art deco originated as an evolution of Baroque, so I think that these styles can and will be gracefully melded together.

i never really paid attention to the borders, but after looking at arioch's screensot, i prefer the new style.

I don't know, the Baroque art-style in G&K looks all well and dandy, but the Art Deco art style for vanilla CiV is one of the main draws for me, it just feels so grand and vast in scale which I feel really suits a game as grand as Civilization. Anyone else feel similar? Maybe they can offer some way to toggle between the art-styles the same way CIV let you toggle between menu screens.

Now that I have paid more attention to the styles (thanks to the recent HD video posted), I must say that I really REALLY prefer the Art Deco style, with clean lines and broad vision.

I second hoping that there is a way to toggle between the two. Tho, if they ever release all of the DLLs, I'm sure others will have even other styles.

NO, no and no.

I really hated the art deco style. It reminds me too much or lame Nazi/Communist propaganda posters. I also find it really immersion destroying to see picture of a man dressed in 18C clothing holding a telescope in the medieval era? This is just one example.

I have a high rez monitor, and for whatever reason the art deco icons don't seems to scale on the tech tree. I have *still* not worked out what the "library" icon is? It reminds me of a Sardukar elite future warrior from the Frank Herbert Book, "Dune". Others just look like blobs of garish colour.

Also whats with all the black everywhere, and the *globally modal*, black dialog boxes that pop up, preventing you from doing anything other than pressing "OK". This was bad UI design even back in the 1990s.

I wish they would re-skin the UI entirely, or at least make it moddable.

You can disable the "Automatic UI Resize" in the Interface Options and once you do that make sure you have "Small Scale Interface" DISABLED, this will re-enable large scale icons, large Tech icosn, unit icons, bigger command icons. and should make building icons larger as well.

I realize this is a matter of personal taste, but Art Deco isn't strictly limited to authoritarian propaganda.

Anyways, I'm a pretty big fan of old pulps (Rocketmen comes to mind). Most of them have that art deco look, thus its an instant love for me.:)

Art Deco was something that made me play Civ 5 even before important patches that came last summer... I don't mind the Baroque look (I also like Baroque as art style, and it indeed fits the theme of Gods and Kings), but I hope there will be a "switch styles" button like in Civ 4.

To be honest, I like the new style better. I don't see also why its a big difference. But I guess it would be nice for you all to have an option to switch.

I still hope it's possible to mod it so it can change per era.
