Archos: Spiders seem weak

I feel like I'll need to have a good look at this, personally. The Archos have never done poorly at ALL in my games, even under AI control, and giving them free Strength 12 units... Hmmm.

Aye - though as WarKirby was keen to point out, they're not strictly Strength 12 and can't progress much beyond their start value. I'm going to be trying a game centered entirely on getting the required levels as fast as possible to see if the requirements need tweaking at all.

I'd agree that they were never weak - but I must admit that the limited playing I've done with the stronger broods has been fun. The other thing I'd considered doing was limiting the devouring for each level by the current nest size (so that you can't get Brood Strength 4 until the same time as you'd be able to get Mother...)

Oh, I know it'll be FUN. Honestly, as long as they don't end up stronger than the Calabim or Scions it won't be an issue.

That's probabaly a good plan with limiting by nest size, though it's really not hard to have massive cities early on. In practice I can have a size 12 city by roughly turn 100 on a good grassland start with a food resource or two (Or on the coast as Lanun, but that's not really applicable here.)

I'm guessing not a happy one though...

Event: Om Nom Nom Nom.
Requires: Archos, Unhappy Population in City
Event Text: "The Haruspex have called for a sacrifice of the unfaithful in <cityname> to appease Mother."
Event Option 1: "Om nom nom nom". -1 Population in <cityname>

I laughed. Hard. I needed that this morning :D Thanks.

Just a little suggestion, almost off-topic: I think the giant spiders should cause fear (or at least a %chance). They are scarying, don't they?

I'd rather the fear by "OMG a giant spider is gnawing off my friends leg I should leave this area" as opposed to a system where they are frozen in fear and can't bring themselves to attack the thing. Honestly. When I see a spider my first thought is to kill it. With fire if available.

AS for these changes. I generally play the Archos when I am feeling like playing an Evil civ with Ice. I've always felt the Spiders should play a larger role in the game and I'm excited to see the ideas being presented in this thread. I really don't know how powerful these spiders are late game since Ice always puts out another patch before we get too far into playing a game >.> but I've always felt that they needed a boost in the early game. Not that the Units I built were bad. It's just the spiders always felt underpowered to me. I used to get excited when a spider spawned but I've started shrugging at it. Hopefully theses changes will give them the boost they need.

One other thing I'll note. I've noticed that the baby spiders no longer grown into a giant spider anymore. Is that intentional or a bug?

Baby spiders should grow into Giant spiders in one battle, because it's hard to kill something with them. And I agree with WarKirby, the spiders are too weak. Some ideas : Mother should cause fear, add spider riders, allow Mother to lay an egg each turn (who will grow into a baby spider after x turns), etc..

Spider riders would be neat! Like cavalry but awesomer. Anyway if spiders end up overpowered I guess their other stuff could be nerfed. It would be more fun for them to fight with lots of spiders and a few weak humans as opposed to lots of humans and a few weak spiders.

when can we expect all this to be implimented?

Possibly allowing the Haruspex and high level spider units to merge to become a "Haruspex with Spider" unit (both models shown in game, a combination of their strengths given to the unit). The main recon line already thematically have spiders with them (the models include the spiders of various sizes).

I really like this idea.

The spider lair in this post should be incorporated somehow into the Archos, if just because it looks amazing.

Make them large and offset from the base city like Palaces are (can you control the direction to ensure that the spread out decently?), and number three would work well as the buildings for the BroodFather mechanic. Then you can visually identify how advanced the Brood is by how many of the web-nodules are spread around the local terrain.

Second one is a nice replacement for the Bear Den improvements, last one would have to be a Unique Feature (Cliffs of Hastur?), but would only work if that lightning is animated, or removed. First would be great as another animal den, but doesn't seem quite right for Lions, which is the only other Den.
