are nukes really necessary?

Wooops! Geez, I feel bad when I pillage my own terrain. I've done that often enough. When my arty stack is bombing the enemy from my own terrain, I frequently have other offensive units in the stack (eg cavalry) to attack later in the turn. But I get so used to hitting the bombard function, when the cavalry turn comes up, I don't notice in time and end up pillaging that square.

Beats nuking my own city though. I think that might be one instance where a reload would be acceptable:)

Renata, just right click to cancel orders.

Well, sure, I know that *now*. :D

And yeah, I did reload. After laughing my butt off.

When I was playing the Carthagians, I got bombed by British and French ICBMs several times. Funny thing was, that they sent about 8 ICBMs at me (most of them intercepted by my Satellite thingy) - and all of them at the same city, not an important city or anything - just another city. And they know where my capital and my industrial centre is, that's for sure. Weird AI.
And about the thread's title: No, nuke - just like in real life - are only used for deterrence (that's the right word, I hope). Nukes have no real militaristic value, but instead they are used as anti-civilians weapon. The nukes at Hiroshima and Nagasaky were not meant to set the two cities weak before a future invasion, but to make the people afraid (the people at the other cities in the world, of course). That's their sole purpose.

I have only used nukes once to see what they were like and it was devestating I beat my main enemy on the other contnent In 2 turns but then of course 5 othere countrys declared war on me and I lost it all. I have only had the comp nuke me once it was greece They always seem to be very agressive in my games they nuked 5 of my citys luckly everyone allied against them and we took them down I had no nukes as I never use them.

I had a game once where France and I were the Powerful Civilizations in the game. France started a war with me out of the blue. I fought back and when they realized I was putting up a hell of a fight I guess they decided the only way they could beat me was to launch ICBM's at my most beneful cities. They must have hit me with 4 nukes. I got fed up and started to launch mine directly up thier a@!. This was the only time the other nations didnt get mad at me (for launching nukes) and declare war on me.
Although after France and I discussed peace terms global warming consumed my continent. I thought that I would add this to this forum considering I saw a post stating that AI has never launched a nuke at them.

The game I used my nukes in there were only 3 civ's remaining. One weak civ and one strong civ apart from me. I was allied with the weak civ against the strong civ. I launched nuke after nuke and the civ I was allied with never got mad. I was also the only civ with nukes so I wasn't worried about retaliation. In that kind of situation they're extremely helpful. I mean I'm sure I could have conquered the other civ without the nukes but it would have been much harder and taken a lot longer.

Nukes lose most value because: *snip* and 2) only kill citizens and don't eliminate city.

You know, that's pretty much what they do in real life. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still populated cities.

I like to use them lots, Just use 6-7 on their main citys and then roll in. The AI never seems to get the point and just nukes small and pointless citys that dont do anything.

I only used nukes once. After acheiving a conquest victory with the French, I realized I had built 30-something ICBMs that just sat there. So I decided to play one more turn and drop them in my biggest cities, just to see what would happen. That's when I found out they can wipe out the defenders of the city - at least, if there is only one or two of them - but not other ICBMs in those cities. I must have built some great bunkers.

Funny thing is that cities that had previously 30+ citizens became quite small, so with all the happiness wonders I had built there was WLTKD all over them by the next turn...

I guess they liked it.

yep, it's fun to see the WLTKD in nuked cities...

Nukes in a game where there is no diplomatic "disarm" option to counter-ballance the threat are otherwise only for mayhem.
I'd love to see a disarm demand during diplomacy

Huge map, 15 AI. Continents:

I was Egypt and I had two of the largest continents in the game, with only the Iroquis left on their own continent, and the English on a peninsula on my largest, but I had a MPP with them, even if they had two cities... :crazyeye: Then I found out I had to take the Iroquis out.. So I started to launch my 30+ ICBMs.. And guess what happened? England declared war on me with their two cities... Sigh!

You can say they got no nice presents for christmas... :D

Yes I would love to see a disarm option especially after UN.
I would love to see many more diplomatic options available for the game. I think it would make the game much more interesting considering all the diplomatic and political options available.

I found something odd. If you conduct a nuclear "test" and launch a nuke at a ocean square, no seems to get mad at you...
