I am only playing on Governor difficultly so far and probably only an average strength player. Also, I've only finished two games. The games seem to end too quickly. I haven't had any chance to use the airplanes at all, hardly even the modern tanks. Mably extending the ages a bit might give players a chance to use these great military assets!

I agree; just when things get interesting for me, an age just suddenly ends. I set age length to longest and it seems to give me a max of 175 turns per age.

If you don't snowball with Science or Culture you're defeniately going to miss out.

Exploration is too easy, the goals are way too simple and don't really take that much effort (especially Treasure, or Relics).

On Long Age length I believe you need 240 points per Age, which without anyone doing anything is 240, but it's quite easy to drop this, I don't think i Had a single Exploration, on neither Settler nor GOvernor, that lasted more than 100 turns.

There is the age setting that has three levels: short, standard, and long. But this only prolongs the age progress, hence, it is not impactful for the modern age. I think for the modern age, there needs to be a slight rework of militaristic and culture victory. Those are very quick to complete compared to economic and science, and before you get to the later techs and civics.

Be warned, however, than long ages mean that even an average player can consistently reach all milestones and future techs/civics in the first two ages.

What you can do to prolong the modern age: beeline natural history, get explorers asap, beeline hegemony, get as many artifacts as possible. That way, you can deny the AI a cultural victory, meaning the age will be longer.

Yep, it's important to start the modern age with a good base.

Depends on the maps and number of players, honestly.
I had one game in which the other 5 AIs only had 2-3 smaller cities. It's much harder to get the relics then, because there aren't many cities with wonders nor large urban/rural population.
I also had one game where the DL civs both had 8 cities when I met them, while the continent was a smaller round shape (shuffle map). I couldn't settle anything in the DL myself, spent to much time exploring and had to rely on conquest only for the Treasure fleets. For some reason this took very long and I didn't have any progress in the first 60 turns of the age (but then snowballed very quickly).

How do you recommend playing to enjoy the era? Epic speed and long or standard speed and it was long?

Maybe the ideal is to play epic and extend the era
I've been playing Epic with Long Ages, and the pace feels very good to me

My first game seemed too fast which was epic speed on standard map. 2nd game seemed better, it helped that I learned the game better and prioritized legacy paths more. It may still be a little too fast, it's extremely hard to finish tech and civics trees. As Ben Franklin I was able to finish tech tree in exploration age, and perhaps the antiquity age (I can't remember, but I may have), but civics wasn't particularly close to finishing. But perhaps this is by design. Can't be jack of all trades type of thing.

I played Standard speed with long ages and had about 1-2 civics and techs left in the Antiquity Age, but I was also going for cultural victory. I had to build 7 wonders so I was more focused on production, gonna see how it plays in Exploration Age today

I agree. The science one is ok, but the other 3 aren't great. Economic you just need 2-3 towns and your work is done early. Same thing with cultural, just convert 4 capitals quickly and you can fill in the rest of the relics with minimal effort.

I would see the antiquities economy route needs a rework too. Too easy to get through standard gameplay.

The best one is the antiquities cultural. That one can be quite difficult to pull off, especially on standard map.

I've been playing Deity, Standard speed. I think the ages are about right, but if there were about 5-10 turns more, I think that would be perfect.

I think long ages are rewarding, but also a bit boring. It‘s very easy to complete multiple (even all) legacy paths on sovereign. When I played standard, I felt much more urgency and pressure. However, in a game where you are not focusing on the legacy goals, I can see how longer ages might be more fun, because you can actually experience the whole techs, civics, units, buildings and wonders of the age.

the positive thing is that with the legacies they gave meaning to the points victory

Don't get me wrong, I am having lots of fun playing the new game and I like the legacy paths. Hopefully, they will come up with more legacy paths so they don't get old. I just want to get into some air combat!!!!
