Pretty much the title. Do you think you've ever ended up with a start that was impossible to reasonably win from?

If not the infamous Charly map I don't think there exists a map that's truly impossible. Highly improbable and luck-dependant, sure, but not impossible.

I remember Fisherman's Friend lozenges with the following advert (at least in Germany): "If they are too strong, you are too weak"

Depends on map generator. Tectonics generate quite a percentage of awful maps. On fractal... NC Jao with let say Toku or Saladin (or whatever not really good leader) would be extremely hard (probably AP cheese would be the real option, but you need to know the map to go for it - in the dark (without earlier knowledge of situation)I do not think it is really winnable).

I don't think I've ever seen a non-cooked map posted here on this forum that nobody could win, and there have been periodic "post your hardest maps" threads, "can't beat this evil map, please help" threads, and so forth. I assume if such maps existed, one of them would have shown up by now (obviously, that doesn't apply if you are using 3rd-party custom map scripts or tinkering with the start in worldbuilder).

I have seen a few, though, where everyone who did end up with a win had to gamble on simply not getting an unlucky AI DoW roll really early in the game. Unwinnable maps may not happen, but maps that require good play and good luck to win do seem to happen once in a while.

There are (but i didn't keep them), Tundra starts with barely any food + a bad leader.
Got them a few times while playing fractal and looking for Iso (but very rare).
Without even 3 decent city spots, no cottage tiles and very little food for specialists, and high barb pressure i saw no way.

Wondering if there are unwinnable maps under the "most default" of settings:

Map: Continents
Size: Standard
Climate: Temperate
Sealevel: Medium
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
World Wrap: Cylindrical
Resources: Standard
6 AI players (free to choose the most difficult lot)

I just did a quick experiment and used Mapfinder to look for an awful start on Fractal with standard conditions.
The rules were: Some tundra AND no river AND no commerce resource AND maximum one food resource.
When I checked again, Mapfinder had generated 438 maps and dismissed 437 of them based on the rules. I was excited, checked out the screenshot of the one map it had saved, and.....

...does still look pretty juicy to me. Plus, even if it had been awful, there's obviously much more than just an awful start to make a map too hard, let alone unwinnable.

Still, im intrigued when I think about what could come out if one would invest similar resources as some HoF players used to generate those maps for example in Seraiels Awesome starts collection - only in the opposite direction.

Maybe i was wrong on fractal, could also have been custom continents (like 6 continents, 6 AIs = good chance of Iso).
I remember the land shape was horizontal, stretched and in the northern parts (so lots of ice and tundra).

I used to play 80% of games on Fractal. What it is best at is creating runaway AIs where an AI gets 16 cities in peaceful expansion while others are at 6-7 (high sea level). Also a fair chance of being isolated and facing the runaway AI at the same time. If nukes count, still winnable.

@Fippy
Somehow, that horizontally stretched map rings a bell. But that was so long ago when you had your old account, right?
