Ares de Borg's Terrain Pack II: Preview Thread

The more screen shots I see, the more I like. And the more questions I have - is that a new mine graphic in the hills near the gems? And if so, where can I get it? :mischief:

Bit of hypercritical feedback - I love how the river mouths silted and melds into the water texture, but the river itself looks a little flat against the grassland, and especially where it crosses the beach. Any chance of some river banks? As I say, this is a little bit hypercritical, but it's all I can do to avoid physically drooling when I see these screens.

Yes those are awesome mines. Please talk about them some more.

Imagine making mines and aggriculture culturally and terrain specific in flavour?

Then you would get those cool mountains of rice that Siam and Japanese? farm in the same way you made those hill mines look better then any mine graphic Ive ever seen.

[Keroro] Actually I agree with that. The really nice thing about this terrain set is that it has so much texture. The grasslands, in particular, look pleasantly rough and rolling, much better than the flat Firaxis tiles. So the rather uniform colour of the river makes it look a little out of place by comparison. I suspect, though, that it would be hard to do much about that, given that the river has to go over a number of different terrains. It's going to look a bit overlaid on those forests no matter what you do. Which is a flaw with the way the game displays terrain, of course, not with this set.

All these screenshots look wonderful. This terrain set should finally make Civ III look genuinely beautiful. I bet it will displace Sn00py's as the "standard alternative".

[T.A JONES] Agriculture can be terrain specific, to a certain degree, and I think it already is in this set. Mines cannot be terrain specific. And no improvements can be culturally specific.

Sorry I meant What if" all crop tiles varried from each other but the differant cultural groups planted differant selections of crops and some could even farm hills but mybe some could strip mountains to balance or irrigate desert etc (with option to turn off like "cultural start location " but atleast there for added sceanario integrity)

Also those mines look amazing on those hills but woudn't fit on the flatground. Imagine they made seprate "mine/industry" for plains and grassland even strip mining a mountain!! Thats what this great shot made me think about, the basis for a better 2d alternative to 3d

Actually, one other minor niggle I just noticed while looking at the pictures again. In the Oooddinnnn! one, the transition from the snow to the grassland doesn't look very realistic. I think that real snow tends to stop a little more abruptly than that, but the line would be very wobbly, and there would be "drifts" of snow on the snowless side to break up the transition. I can't find a good picture to illustrate this though. I wonder it it would be possible to make little snow drifts, as it were - clumps of snow, rather than just speckles of white pixels? I think this would be a bit more realistic.

That's just an idea. Feel free to ignore it, of course. I suspect that transitions from snow to no-snow are one of the harder things to make look convincing, because they look pretty odd even in real life.

As stated on numeros occasions I love you terrain (and use it in one scenario).

But there is one thing that I dislike. It's the jungle, that seems out of proportions. Those jungle trees are much bigger than the forest graphics, and even appear as tall as mountains. :)

It's one of aaglo's creation as far as I can see. The english galleon maybe?

Good idea, I'll see what I can do.

just keeps looking better and better. i love you
Err... please behave.

Correct, the one with the blank sails. I'm using it as generic galleon.

@ALL: Thanks for the comments!

I would have to agree about the river looking somewhat flat (although this seems inevitable and I believe you're definitely pushing the civ graphics to their limits, so keep it up ;) ) but I personally feel the snow to grassland transition looks great. I guess this tends to sway from person to person but even if it wasn't great (which it is), it would be a mere minor fallicy in an overall untopable terrain set.

Possibly a fix for the river would be to build one up from scratch and possibly bring in a brand new texture like you did with the ocean for instance (but in the case of rivers, the texture would obviously be completely different).

I also had one gripe about the marshes. They are the only thing that REALLY bothers me. They look too flat and seem like they are hovering above the jungles. They also seem quite monotonous in color and overall seem kind of lifeless. Maybe the addition of a few plants on the borders and a revamp of the overall color and texture would make it look that much better. Just an opinion. :D

I got a simple suggestion. I believe you can't go wrong to release a "Are's Greener "version of your grassland. Everyone loves that texture your using but some might want a more Civvish green with a slighty more cartoonish feel brought out with a brighter and lighter green turf.

The grassland is like the flagship terrain file. Keep the rest the same or mix in a few variants that youve already got in mind(brighter river etc). Youve done so much work already I can't see why you woudn't want a simple shade alternative to be made available for the traditinal discerning audience. It your call though. Ether way love what you've done here.

I've tried really hard to resist posting here, because the work is so incredible, and personally I would feel guilty critiquing something so wonderful. But I've always really liked the marshes in TAM, with the murky color mix (algae, etc.) and the occasional lotus floating amidst the muck.
