Arioch's Analyst Thread

also one of the reviwers, can't remember which now, stated that Edinburgh (<is that how its spelt?) is a city state, and a militaristic one at that.

I found this link to a French website with lots of new screenshots over on the official Civ 5 forums. Lots of new information. Apparently the bonus from adopting freedom is half unhappiness from specialist population, not all population, for instance. Chariot Archers are strength 3 with a ranged attack of 6. You can see how the Great Wall looks, too. It's awesome.

There are a number of new previews referred to in various posts. I have links to them in the Recent Updates section of the index of my page.

All of the previews are sloppily written and contain numerous mistakes. I take what I see only in screenshots and videos seriously.

Entirely agree. The new vid shots in the IGN video preview are pretty revealing/cool. Particularly the glimpses into how to buy land, new military units, and the pausing over the three social policy branches.

Great link to the French site... lots of intriguing screenshots.

Observations: Lots of trading posts everywhere, especially in City State hexes. Jaguar Warriors are base strength 6, same as regular warrior. Unsure of special ability. Chariot Archers are strength 3 with 6 ranged attack. And the Trieme Unit looks powerful: 6S, Range 4, and 5 movement. It's fast and has ranged attack... unsure if against land units too, though.

This is getting kind of nuts. :D

Lots of blanks being filled in.

Sweet, got all 18 of the civilization badges now.

edit: the images on the Gamestar.de site are the same ones from the printed article. Excellent.

And the video is also the same one from the magazine. So at least anyone who hasn't seen it yet can see it now.

Arioch, take a look here !

There is also Darius awaiting at jeuxvidéo.com

Hahahaha. Great find with the German site! If you go to the homepage you get to a video... where he promptly plays as the Germans and takes over all the neighboring French cities! First screenshot of industrial era Germany is with it in control of Paris and Lyons :). Brilliant.

Other cool notes from the German video:

@ 3:18. Great overview of Empire-wide happiness. Each luxury resource is +5 Happiness (Gems, Silk, Spices, and Wine). Player has 38 overall. 20 from Luxury. 2 from Policy. 4 from buildings. 12 from Difficuly Level (assumably an easier one).

Player has 38 unhappy: 10 from number of cities (unsure of the math), 6 from occupied cities, A whopping 14 from his specialist population and another 8 from occupied specialist population. The Indian Ability looks powerful now, huh?

@3:00-3:16, great lingering overview of policy branches.
Under piety: Organized religion reduces the happiness required to start a GA by 25%... and Reformation immediately grants a six-turn GA.
Under Honor: Military Caste allows a garrison unit to reduce unhappiness by one (i.e. for every city you own with a garrison)... Warrior Code automatically yields a Great General.

I made a list of all the new stuff (i think its all of it) from the french site, so you can update easier (and so others can see the new info without having to scan the site or look at all 46 pics):

The Great Library gives a free technology.
Stockholm is a city-state (haven't we known this for a while?). Maritime/Irrational.
Edinburgh is a city-state (as Schuesseled said, its Militaristic)
Jaguar is 2 movement, 6 strength
Catapult is 2 Movement/4 Strength/14 Ranged attack
Trireme has 5 movement, 6 strength, and 4 ranged attack

Great work Arioch! One typo spotted:

It's known whether it will require Horses or Ivory. << should probably be "It's NOT known"

http://well-of-souls.com/civ/civ5_ancient_units.html#war_elephant

Actually, we know that Ivory is not a strategic resource, therefore it is not needed to build anything.
1 Source of Horses will be needed for 1 War Elephants. As Silly as that sounds.

Edit:/ "Not used up to build anything"

A lot of stuff going on. Some interesting interface changes- "safe attack" used to describe combat outcomes.

I like the idea of badges and how they look in general, but I don't understand some of the choices.

Why for Greece, instead of an Omega character, didn't they they choose the Sun of Vergina:

If it was because they chose a starburst for Siam, they could have replaced the Siamese starburst with an elephant, which has also been used as a symbol by Siam. I just find using an Omega to be strange

hate to contradict my own brother, but the circus building requires access to horse or ivory (i assume inside the city radius as opposed to empire based req.)

Kilt-wearing, claymore-wielding UU FTW
Ironically, it looks like the player in those screenshots may have just gotten all the city states to try and kill him (by being too aggressive).
They can take our lives, but they can never take our FREEDOM!

It's 2  per each city, and 3  per occupied city. He has 7 cities, and further in the video it's revealed (via paying attention to the mini map) that 2 of them are French, and the rest are German... not to mention that with the number 7, and then 10  for home cities and 6 for occupied... it's the only breakdown that makes any sense mathematically.

Now, population is unknown since we don't of the cities at the time.

I know Ivory is in the game, but its not listed as a Strategic resource, rather a luxury. Which means it isn't a "1 use for 1 instance of a unit/building" Strategic Resource.

Edit:/ Okay fine, its not used up to build something.
