Arioch's Analyst Thread

I don't see why not, triemes fired arrows in civ 4, makes sense to me to carry on with that.

Now chariots being ranged archers, i didnt see that coming. Also form one of the vids i see horsemen (which aren't ranged) lobbing what looklike molotov cocktails at a city that was unusual.

Maybe it's a ranged attack with a distance of 1. It sounds strange, but opens 2 things up. They can:
1) Choose between doing less damage and no retaliation, or attacking another ship and taking damage for a more decisive battle
2) Bombard shore that's 1 tile away

Going through the Krawall Gaming pics:

Pic 13:

There's a "Lancer" Unit with 22 strength and 4 movement. So that can be updated, Arioch... Cool that they are going with that Intermediate Horse unit (roughly historically accurate, too). Also, can we assume that basically all Mounted units are 4 movement at this point? I think so, despite the spring videos of 3 movement. That's really interesting combat-wise... because no approaching enemy (or your forces going into enemy territory) are going to be able to see 3-4 spaces beyond. So, an enemy (or you) could easily leave some mounted units spread out and just come in to annihilate someone from a wing. 4 Movement is a lot of ground.

Also, remember the Iroquois ability... with the ability to go through forests, the Iroquois mounted units are going to be superfast and lethal.

Also, check out pic 6:

There's a Lancer about to destroy a Barbarian archer in an encampment... at 1894 AD! Now, this is probably an oddly rigged demo. Still, with all the neutral territory which will remain (i.e. expansion limitation controls, unlike in Civ IV) it seems likely that barbarians will remain in the game as an entity into far later eras then in CivIV. This alters our view on the German Furor Tectonicus, does it not? If you can basically raid Barbarian encampments with a small force of cavalry roaming around neutral territory... and encampments keep spawning deep into the game, then the added bonuses may stack up, no?

These are a few places to update based in the strategic resources community feature. Copper is clearly not a strategic resource so in the AWOL section that note could be added. Although there are no images the text confirms fighter, jet fighter, submarine and modern armor so they could be added to the modern units page. Ironclad is confirmed for the Renaissance units page.

Light mounted units appear to have a movement of 4, and heavy mounted units (like Knights) appear to have a movement of 3.

That's a good point on the Trireme movement, though. I thought it was odd that a Trireme should be as fast as a Frigate.

Some good shots on the krawall.de site. Damn shame they're so small.

I notice that it refers to the barbarian ship as a "galley" when bombarded by the city.

How convenient that the tech tree screenshot picks up exactly where our current information ends. :D

And a modern-era Great General.

Silly Firaxis.. Generals don't drive their own jeeps! :D

It looks like he is standing. Someone else is driving.

Thanks KAVA, i haven't noticed that czech sites already have prewiev on CiV.

The prewiev on hrej.cz have no new info and is somewhat sceptical about ciV, but there is a bunch of interesting screenshots in the gallery.

Radar tech gives you acces to Bomber and Paratrooper unit. Also, you can re-listen the spoken qoute for each tech.

I guess we can safely guess 65-70 techs total? There were ~85 in vanilla Civ 4, if I can count accurately. I guess if we add the social policies (of which there are 40, 30 available at a time) there are actually more "advances" to make, but there are less techs.
