Arioch's Analyst Thread

From Extreme Tech:
Spoiler :
We're interested to see what else 2K Games will do with Civilization V between now and the final launch, currently rumored to be in late September or early October. Our contact at 2K tells us that the technology tree is still being tweaked and polished—a nice move, as that's crucial to the balance of any Civilization game. And the multiplayer and mod functions are important components that will define the experience for many players.

I wouldn't put much value to statements of someone whose "contact at 2K" apparently didn't tell him the exact release date for the game even though it has been known for 2 months. Or someone who apparently couldn't be bothered to recheck their boilerplate review from half a year ago.

4) What is the "10" in a circle at the bottom of these screenshots?

It seems to be the cursor and maybe the level of zoom?

I just calculated something, please check the EDIT on my last post.

Yes, I somewhat disagree, see my last post. I think there are 3 tiers in the Future era, with the last one being the repeatable "Future Tech", and at least Nuclear Fusion in there.

That is not necessary true, I cant see any reason why the traits we know couldn't be bound to leaders, sure they seem a bit like they are more suited to the civ than the leader but there is no word on how it is coded in the game. Bound to leader or bound to civ. I think it is bound to leader, so the possibility for additional leaders for a civ exist for future expansion packs and mods. However that is just speculations from my side but you are also speculating. I am not saying that you are wrong just that there has been no confirmation.

Right now, I think it's pretty clear that the traits are linked to the Civ as some are by and large very clearly more closely associated with the Civ rather than the leader. Washington had nothing to do with Manifest Destiny, Bismark is in no way associated with Furor Teutonics, etc.

HOWEVER, there is still hope. With an expansion they can make these traits leader-specific quite easily. If the trait we have now works well with the Leader, then you'd just make a new leader with a new trait. However, in the case of say Washington, you'd create a leader associated with Manifest Destiny and then create a new trait for Washington.

I don't know the likelihood of such an implementation, but I'd love it. Then again, if the time and resources can be spent on new Civs instead, I'd probably prefer that.

I dont know why there's confusion as why the bluish spikes are dye.

I have no idea. They have been quite obviously dye in my opinion for a while now. They even look remarkably similar to the dye resource in Civ IV.

It is hilarious how we have to pick over random comments made by previewers and screen shots to get the information we want. If 2k can send preview builds to enthusiast press websites, why can't they send one to AriochIV or one of the civfanatics mods and we can get all the answers straight from the horses mouth. The embargo's over, it's not like someone is going to leak information ahead of schedule. But of course, having all the answers may not be as fun as all this detective work...

A few sloppy things in those screenshots:
1) Map of the Roman Empire at 44BC. That was at the death of Julius Ceasar. They should have used something from during Augustus' rein (27BC - 14 AD) instead.
2) Radar shows 3 icons for units but mentions only 2 in the text.

eh, eh ;)

especially that Jon Sch. has a major in history... :p

I'm disapointed they've brought back the multiple future tech for right at the end, bit boring eh :P

Any alternative ideas? Making the tech tree so long that no one is ever going to research it all is not really a viable option either, nor is it a good investment of designer time.

They could simply end it as apposed to having +1 Happiness every time you finish a Future Tech, but meh, its not that important, keeping it in is fine.

I think one of the design decisions in Civ5 was not letting anything be without vakue, see how excess happiness now causes Golden Ages for example.

according to the civlopedia shot of GDR, that the GDR is the only future unit (and there are the spaceship units)
