Art style reminiscent of civ revolution 1 & 2

Most of the units are pretty decent; it's only the swordsman and caravel that are excessively stylized to the point of looking silly. The shapes of the buildings don't bother me (the city buildings in Civ V are extremely primitive and ugly).

What I find most disappointing about the terrain and structures is the relative lack of texture. This may be for technical rather than aesthetic reasons, but I think that (and the saturation) is the main factor that gives the impression of a kid's game or a mobile game.

This is exactly my feeling on the matter. I really don't see why there would be technical limitations to some basic texturing in this day and age. It's more likely that they're not done yet and this is just a really early example of the graphics. They really do need to tone down that saturation, though. With some texture and a little less saturated colors... This can look pretty good.

I agree with you 100%. The dev team definately knows this reaction and I assume has time for minor tweaks still, we don't know how old these 3 screenshots are and they are probably "composed" just to show stuff.

I love the cliffs where the hills meet the ocean. If they have animated waves crashing into the rocks it'll be even more impressive.

I quite like the graphics and although they do bear some resemblance to Civ Rev that doesn't concern me. Whether it bears resemblance to Civilization 5 is what really concerns me. Lol.

Why are graphics these days so full of "bloom" and extreme high contrast with texture blur so it looks like everything is smooth and flawless? It's so annoying, I want my military to fight bloody battles in my name, I want them to look fierce and blood thirsty. I want a little moodiness, a little realism, something to balance the cuteness. So far it's mostly cutesy, need more angry tyrant ruler

I actually think that theg raphics may be more alive than before, I kind of imagine the trees gently swaying back and forth now.

They do, you can see a number of examples in the screenshots.

Hopefully they will have lots of animation to make up for the plainness of the static visuals.

I'm sure they will. I am looking forward to the game play videos. :)

It was probably a mistake not to release a short gameplay clip through IGN showing the same scenes as those in the screens.

Let's hope they realize this and we'll get a preview stream from quill or marbozir soon.

Sounds good! It could really make the game come alive. :)

Having followed video games for many years now, I can state fairly confidently that, this close to release, they will be the graphics we get. Do not expect any major change unless you like to be disappointed.

Can you give examples of major changes that would be set at this point vs minor changes that are more likely? For example, would terrain textures be a major change in your opinion?

Not expecting any big changes, but if we check out this Civ 5 announcement picture here:

We can see improvement before release. Check out those flat farms, and how the horse and deer resources have very little detail (and poor horses being scared stiff).

That Civ 5 pic and those Civ 6 pics might be older than we think, and anyway, people should see things on the move with all the zooming in and out.

I have no problem with the style and feel the new graphics are definately an improvement.

edit: here's the pre-release Wu Zetian that had a brest-reduction surgery before release.

It's off-topic, but this just got me thinking of a Cliffs of Moher natural wonder.

Perhaps they were given the requirements to come up with a style fit for tablet or television screen.

Or maybe the strategy is to make Rev the trainer, allowing VI, etc. to become more complex, but still be familiar and intuitive to somebody playing Rev.

Regardless, give me the interesting gameplay, and I'll accept Civ I graphics or a Civ V tactical view.
