As of now, which is your favorite Civ to play as, and your least favorite?

How is the Varu useless? I haven't played as India much but, on paper, it looks like the most powerful unit of it's era by a long way.

I usually like to start in the classical era (cos I prefer to play larger maps). On higher difficulties (Deity) the AI get spearman, which the Varu are weak to. So you gotta build out an army first anyway. In comparison play Nubia, Rome, Kongo, Macedon for a much easier time. IMO It's not a bad unit but there are better.

Also the stepwell often requires clearing out flatland which would o/w have provided you with natural defence.

India's trait is surprisingly difficult to fully utilise. You have to spread all the religions in your cities. If you wait for the AI the game will be over by then :undecide:

Didn't know flatland gave defensive bonuses--do terrain types give defensive bonuses in Civ VI? Thought that was only true in IV.

Yes they do... at least, hills do, of that I am sure...

From Wikia site (http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Combat_(Civ6)) :

Terrain modifiers - Various terrain types offer bonuses or penalties to defense. The unit which benefits or suffers is the unit currently occupying the tile. Mouse over any tile and you will see its modifiers listed in the popup info tab.
  • "Ideal terrain" is the positive defense modifier, offering a +2 CS bonus. Terrains that are considered ideal are Hills (any type), Woods, and Rainforests. Note that the later two may combine with Hills, and their bonuses stack for a total of +4.
  • "Unfavorable terrain" is the negative modifier, which confers a -2 CS. Terrains considered unfavorable are Marshes and Floodplains (but not Oases).
  • "River defense" is a bonus which applies when the attacking unit has to cross a River to reach the defender. Unless the attacker has a special promotion, the defender receives a +5 CS bonus.

These two.

Forest and rainforest not only give a +2 bonus they also slow down invaders. So with India you have to be mindful of where to place the stepwells. There is a double penalty cos barbs and other invaders can heal if they pillage stepwells too :cringe:

India is IMO one of my least favourite civs. I even prefer France. I've learnt the trick to play China now so even they're better...

I only played as America, Germany, China, Rome, Indonesia and bits of Japan, Sumeria, Russia and Macedon. Sumeria and Russia were actually kinda fun. To be honest, i ignore unique units always too much (especially cavalry or late-game units), but i tend to make more use of uniques lately since i've learnt to play the game better. I think I liked my game as Germany the most so far. But I suspect that if i ended my game with Sumeria or Russia, i would have chosen one of them, probably the latter one since Sumeria would have tended to be a bit more boring to the end.

I loved Germany and Japan because they make city planning feel like real work, and rewards you when done properly. I haven't tried them yet but Nubia also seems to be interesting in this area and I should try them out while waiting for the expansion.

The least favorite civ for me is America; I can't really appreciate any of their unique perks. Their benefits come into play so late (other than the +5 for home continent, which is too situational)

Still haven't played probably about one third of the Civs available to me, though I have all the DLCs. There are lots of Civs I've really enjoyed, though, which can only be a good thing.

The best so far, by a country mile, has been Rome. Free monuments are awesome, pretty nifty UU, versatile Civ... not much to dislike really. Other honorable mentions: Norway (way more fun than I expected!), England (free Redcoats! free Redcoats everywhere!) and Persia.

Probably my least favourite Civ so far has been Spain. I find playing the religious game to be exhausting: most games I'll get myself set up with a religion and expand it to all my cities, but pretty much never convert anyone else outside of City-State quests (or just to provoke an AI I don't like). Spain gives you pretty much no tools which help you found a religion but you might as well not be playing as Spain if you don't.

My favourite is probably the Khmer, as I prefer religious and cultural victories and the Khmer can be strong at both without being overburdened with the food/housing problems which often plague faith-heavy strategies.

I also enjoy Persia, for reasons entirely separate to my Persophilia; it's very fun to play a more unconventional cultural game centered around Pairadaezas, national parks and seaside resorts rather than Great Works. Cyrus' ability helps in that regard.

But I haven't played that many civs yet, so I may well change my mind :p although I will add that I'm a big India fan, since they can get large quantities of early-game faith which is really useful via Gandhi's ability. And the Stepwell/Dharma/Varu are particularly useful, ofc.

Guess what civ I like the most at the moment. I'm also fond of Germany, Australia, England and Indonesia. Not too fond of America or Brazil tho.

Australia and Germany are my go to civs to play. Australia is prolly the most perfect civ for my playstyle, eg surviving early game and then exploding in middle game.

After those two, England is sneaky fun to play.

I'd like to try Spain and Russia but I just dislike civs that have faith based buildings or improvements. I just don't care about the faith system in civ 6.

my favorites are Kongo and Rome, and i dislike America and Persia

My top three are definitely Aztecs, Kongo and Nubia. So much fun.

I'm not sure if I can pick a least favourite. Probably a toss up between America and Khmer. Neither appeals to me in any way or form.

Tough choice, since I play so many civs instead of one. I usually play Tomyris and Jagdwiga the most (Scythia and Poland). Least favorite, I don't know if I ever have one since I tend to play with anybody.

I like Teddy because he's blue, and Qin Shi Huang because of the aesthetic qualities of the cities.

I also like Kathy of Medicine (France) because she's also blue.

Blue is a cool color... :band:

My craziest game was australia tsl...so overpowered

But my faves are england (navy dockyards, free redcoats), rome... and if playing island plates norway

For the island plates map isn’t Indonesia the best civ to play as? I mean their uniqueness improvement and ability is crazy strong. At least for me Indonesia has become one of my faves on island plates map hahaha.

They may be I just love being an early terror of the seas and make a point of invading england if they are in the game :)

Russia’s Lavras also provide GWAM points, allowing you to hoard early Great Writers with ease. Later on you can use all that faith on National Parks and GP purchases. Despite all that faith generation, Russia is actually very comfortable with NOT pursuing religious victory - just think of faith as alternative currency.

Like a lot of others, Rome is my favourite civ to play. Extremely versatile no matter the start and good buffs all around. The Legion is amazing.

Worse civ to play is America as they feel extremely vanilla in the early part of the game and just bland in general.
