Ok, so I'm not exactly doing this right now...I'm currently saving up for my next trip! But I have been backpacking quite a bit around Europe, and no doubt there's some other people here with similar experience. And hopefully some who want to gain some similar experience! So...does anyone have any questions?

Did you get Mod approval to start this?

Cool its nice to meet a fellow backpacking traveler. I put down my pack years ago. But for near a decade I traveled the Pacific Northwest of the US living out out of my backpack exploring the country. I spent most of my time in the quiet places away from the cities and much time in the mountains. For a time I lived among the Redwoods on a secluded coastal paradise. I worked as needed and lived free as a bird. I miss it!!! It was painfull to become redomisticated. If this thread is not put down then I would like to discuss your travels and would be happy to share my own.

Pm the mods!

Have you seen the movie hostel?

Avoid backpacks with zippers. They fail you in the worst circumstance. Arghhh I wore out two packs before buying an infantry pack. It does have one zipper but it is Heavy Duty. And if it fails I could have sewn that compartment shut and still accessed the space from the main pack. A military pack is heavier but it is durable and reliable.

I have a 70l Kathmandu backpack. I suggest getting the biggest backpack you can carry, even if you don't have enough stuff to carry in it, because you soon will.
What is the biggest thing you put in that backpack?

What color is it?

Gangor do you mind if I participate in the answering of some questions? My pack was my home for nearly ten years. I traveled humbly, lived outdoors, and slept on the ground. Our experiances may be a little differant but our desire to explore and be free must be somewhat similar.

Haha, yes. The main compartment of my bag relys on drawstrings and straps, but I do have a couple of compartments that have strong zips. Seems a good compromise, as I haven't had any problems yet.

Please do! I might even have questions for YOU. :D

I meet many European travelers visiting the US. I grew to envy your system of hostels and public transportation. Sounds like Europe is very traveler friendly. I would love to backpack through Europe. Is backpacking across Europe common?

Very. Especially by Australians and New Zealanders (such as myself). We even have our own weekly magazine here in London :)

When you travel Europe do you take time and travel the backcountry as well?
Is it true that you can take trains right to the trail heads?

It is, and I love it. :goodjob: Actually, I've just been yesterday to buy some train tickets, and there were tens, maybe hundreds of backpackers around me, in the station. :)

That would be so cool to have been part of an actual cultural subset of backpacking travelers. I met more backpackers from other countries than I did my fellow countrymen. I think it is rare here for a person to travel by pack. There are alot of backcountry packers though. Its nice to be able to share a passion like that with others.
