Atlas Shrugged trailer

Here's a good point that was raised elsewhere: the trailer is all about trains, right? Trains this, trains that, trains trains trains trains trains. But conservatives hate trains. Trains are for liberals. They like cars.

So, not updating the source material for a modern setting? Maybe not the best idea.

Small c conservatives love trains - at least in the UK ;)

But this is aimed at an American audience. And in America trains threaten the profits of special interests and help poor people find jobs.

It's in English so it is made for the English speaking world TBH.

All hollywood movies end up on our shores and I expected Traitorfish would know us conservatives like trains here :D

I think the audience is pretty narrowly North American. I mean, how often is a Briton likely to encounter Ayn Rand outside of the internet, and, even then, more than superficially?

No, you just like privatising things. Difference. :p

Actually i'm in favor of nationalising the trains :P

But atm the private companies are doing decently so lets keep them continuing that.

TBH Ayn Rand is pretty unknown to anybody uninterested in politics which is a lot of people -- compared to OT for example - that includes USA too.

Communist!

Or, erm, possibly "Nazi!" Or maybe "Liberal!"? I honestly forget how we're doing this these days. :crazyeye:

Pfft, like buggery they are! Compare the British rail network to the French or Japanese one, and you might be forced to qualify that "decently" somewhat. :p

True, but the name has gained enough weight among the libertarian (and "libertarian") right that there is an established audience there, at least enough for a relatively small project like this. America, at least, has a large number of people who think that they are interested in politics, while most Britons pride themselves on cynical detachment.

That looked like something out of CollegeHumor.

My friend who is a huge fan of the book (though doesn't seem to care about the book's politics) is upset at the modern setting because unlike back when the book was written, a major train line being disrupted would not be as huge a deal today as it is in the book.

The trailer looks very cheap and poorly acted.

If the producers can't make a trailer without bashing you on the head with the blunt end of the movie's themes, then I doubt the movie has the subtlety required to sell BS to audiences.

Many trailers have to resort to using every interesting piece of the movie to try and sell the movie. And the rest of the movie tends to end up as filler. This movie probably has a predetermined audience. And then some people will see it out of curiosity. So it might do better than it deserves, if the trailer and what is said about the book are any guides.

Need to start making Team Francisco/Team Hank t-shirts

So, last week, they released the trailer for the first part in upcoming trilogy adapting Rand's notorious slab of petty bourgeois masturbation fodder novel to the big screen.

Thoughts?
I like trains.
Not really, but the trailer seems to be all about trains.

I think it'll be interesting to see what reception this gets outside of North American. Rand and Objectivism are both virtually unheard of in Europe, so I'm really not sure if most people will realise it's mean to be more than a vaguely preachy thriller.

I think a lot of people who see this movie and haven't heard of Ayn Rand before will be really confused about who's supposed to be the good guy and the overall message.
As a movie based on a fringe-ideology promoting book it might be unintentionally hillarious and become an instant "cult classic" like Batlefield Earth.
I like how they plan to make it a trilogy, probably need an entire movie just to show John Galts speech in all it's entirety.

But omg guys WHO IS JOHN GALT I JUST HAVE TO FIND OUT?!?

It looked like a good movie for the first minute of the trailer, but by the second minute I was too bored to keep watching. Looks really low budget, and the gilded age industry was entirely unconvincing given that it didn't look like a period piece. Needed maglev rail and nanofiber construction.
