I've got cable modem which has worked wonderfully until about 3 days ago... when it started working like a telephone modem... pages loading piece by piece, and worst of all, "Connection refused" almost every other time I submit anything anywhere or change pages.

What is going on?

I have no idea... I'm the only user on this hill...

I haven't quite figured out where all it happens- definitely on hotmail and on the forums that I usually browse through hotmail windows. I guess though you guys are basically saying there's nothing I can do about it.

It wouldn't be a memory problem on my computer, right?

It shouldn't be.

Do you have programs like Kazaa or anything running? If so, and if someone is uploading from you, that's probably your problem. Uploads, no matter how slow, always slow down the speed of your connection (I have to look for a fix to this, I'm sure there is one somewhere.) Anyhow, the simple solution to that is to disable the sharing of files on Kazaa, or just close Kazaa.

That is assuming that this is your problem. If not, then I don't know... it could just be congestion.

Go to http://www.2wire.com/ and take the "Bandwidth Meter" test to see how your connection is. If all else fails, call your service provider's support line and see whats up.

Thanks Jeratain. No I'm not uploading anything I'm aware of, and I have a firewall so I shouldn't be uploading anything I'm not aware of either...

98.9 kbps- is that good?

...haha, and the connection was refused when I first tried to post this...

Well upload uses different bandwidth than download. 128k is the cap usually for cable internet. Try running an extended ping to a website. like yahoo. Pull up your command prompt type ping yahoo.com -t If you are seeing significant packet loss (ie: >20%) call your ISP. Another step in troublehsooting would be to traceroute to a couple different sites. tracert domain.com at the command prompt. Look for *'s which means it is timing out.

No. Not for cable at least.

I'm on DSL and I get 1355.9 Kbps. You should definately call your provider and have them work your way through your possible problems.

If that doesn't work and all else fails, post here again with the results and I'll help you through some tweaking of the TCP/IP protocols.

Thanks guys.

Boy, for what I for pay for cable modem, this sure bites.

I will keep y'all posted on how it progresses. I'll be happy just to forego the refused connections and slow loading pages, just like it was for the first 17 months of having this connection.

I did a "release/renew" on my WINIPC.CFG, it didn't help one bit. What other options were you talking about Jeratain? I am so sick of dealing with my cable company that I'd like to leave calling them as a last option...

Well changing the tcp/ip settings isn't going to do you much good if you're only getting 96kbps. MTU and windowing is only for larger speeds. You could have a signal issue which needs to be addressed with your ISP, try a different patch cable, could be the NIC... or several other things.. call your isp

Oh, I really don't want to call them. Maybe it is the wire. I was having another problem with it earlier. Could it be the wire?

Like voodoocat said, I was basically going to step you through increading your MTU and whatnot. But also, like he mentioned, it's meant for higher speeds.

Really, the best thing you can do is call support at your provider and work with them to get through it. Sorry that I can't be of more help, but it's difficult to say what the problem is right now.

Well thanks though. Earlier this year I had intermittent signal problems that I corrected myself through fudging with wires and chanting magic spells. Now I'll call them and see what can be done.
