Attila the Hun : 3D animated, era specific leaderhead

This is a nice leaderhead, but I do have a comment about that "gentleman" Atilla. He once ate his son with one of these two methods (no one is sure which): a) his son was roasted with honey or b) his son was raw and marinated/served with honey. I say that sums up what kind of person Atilla was right there, set aside his warped-mind brutality. But again, it is a nice leaderhead. :)

No, I think these are only evil rumours about him. Some Roman monk (or priest etc. can't remember the name) went to meet him just before he attacked Rome and wrote everything he saw down. And the conclusion was that Attila in fact was a very intellectual gentleman outside the battlefield.

Priscus. Jordanus is the other very reliable source speaking of Attila. See Patrick Howarth's "Attila King of the Huns" for a great reference book.

Unfortunately, no. The only actual Hunnish city name I can think of is "Buda." Buda was the seat of power for Attila's older brother, also called Buda (or Bleda) until he was killed. Buda was eventually sacked, and the Magyars built Obuda over it which later became part of Budapest.

... So the conclusion is that he never killed more than he could eat?? :mischief:

The Medieval version will get a makeover in the 5th Century set. I'll do full pcxs for the new background, and ensure there's a link in this thread.

A sneak preview:
Attilanew.jpg

The new version of the Medieval era is now available - there's the preview in the first post and download links in the second post.

The flcs are the same as in the set of 5th Century leaderheads, the pcxs are mainly the same, but they include an AT_all that's era specific and fits in with the rest of the set. That pcx file is only available in this thread.

A superb leaderhead, R8XFT! Thanks for creating Attila and sharing with us.

I've plugged him in as a replacement for Temujin of the Mongols; now I'm trying to hurry up the game I'm in to be able to play him!

To add some real history to this debate over huns. The huns territory spread from the caspian sea to the baltic sea. It was in 445 that Atila killed his brother and assumed the throne. Since the huns were a barbaric tribe, its existence was based on the flow of plunder from conquests. In 447 he launched his war on the western roman empire, becoming the Horsemen of the Apocalypse for rome. In 451 Atila reached the walls of rome. He does notconquer the city, cause rumors spread that the eastern roman empire Byzantium is preparing to strike at him from the back. So he leaves Rome and moves towards Byzantium. He vows that he will bring constantinople to the ground. In 453 he died of a nose bleed, by suffocating from his own blood. The empire colapses shortly after. Hope that sorts some stuff about the huns. The Hungarians came later from the east as well as the bulgarians. I have no idea why firaxis is so ignorant, maybe i should make a complaint for historical inaccuracy. Anyway great leader head R8XFT, you think you can make a leader head for the Bulgarians if its not too much to ask

As for the Budapest as you all know its two cities that became one. The City of Buda or Obuda and the city of pest, the city of pest was found by one of the bulgarian tribe that left Volga Bulgaria(or Great Bulgaria az teh byzantines called it).

Some of that is only rumor. There are many explanations for Bleda's (Buda's) death; it is certainly not an established fact that Attila killed him. Attila's retreat from Rome is also a very difficult event to know the causes of. Pope Leo was a very persuasive speaker, and Attila was known to have an interest in the Christian religion of the Roman Empires. As for Attila's death, there is absolutely no way of knowing how exaclty he died. It is found in many sources that he died on the wedding night of his latest wife, but the possible causes range from a nosebleed, a brain aneurysm, or even poisoning. After the fall of the empire, the Huns dispersed; it is a widely-held theory that the modern Szekelys (szeklers) in Transylvania are the descendants of the Huns (as they themselves believe and even state in their naional anthem). Finally, Pest was founded long after Hungary had been established as a full-fledged Christian country; it was designed to be a sort of "support town" taking care of transportation, production and other NIMBY services that the royal, upper-class city of Buda did not want within its own borders.

I have to disagree with you Korossyl, the lands of today's Hungary were part of the Avars haganate and in 803-805 those lands were subjugated by Khan Krum and the city of pest was part of the border between bulgaria and the frank empire. Khan Krum himself is believed to be a decsendant from one of the bulgarian tribes that have settled in Panonia(hungartytoday) led by the 4th son of Kubrat who was the ruler of the Old Great bulgaria. As to add more historical inaccuracy Volga Bulgaria was founded by a group of bulgarians that were forced to move north and they lasted until the mid of the XIII century. To recap what iterests us, the old great bulgaria as the byznatines chronist refered to, devided in 5 groups led by the 5 sons of Khan Kubrat, they all founded different states. One founded Volga Bulgaria, the other founded bulgaria of today, one stayed and became a vassal to the Hazars, the fourth moved in panonia and settled there, the 5th son stayed in the southern of the old great bulgaria. The Old Great Bulgaria covered the lands north-east of the black sea. The magyars who are considered the founders of hungary came in 896 or 891(need to look up that one). Also one more fact the lands of both buda and pest were settled by the romans in 1ad or 100ad( im sure it started with 1 :S) since they were rich in mineral water and the romans built a lot of public baths there.

The theory of pope leo that he convinced attila to spare rome is considered to be catholic propaganda(sorry if this offends someone, but those are not my words).

Ofcourse i give the possibility that atila's death and his retreat from rome is a topic of great speculation depending on the school of toughts you have acquinted your self with.

And with the God bless the hungarians signature i can only guess how long we will be debating this topic :P

It's great having all this history about the Huns being discussed - but can anyone confirm any Hun settlement names? I know of only four - and I'm not 100% sure on these:

Tongwancheng
Gizellamajor
Ivolginsk
Gostivar

There have been several suggestions in this thread, but no-one's sure. Perhaps with this civ, we'll have to accept they were essentially nomads and have a best guess for cities  .

well they surely had settlements but they were a band of roaming barbarians that conquered everything in their path

This is all I could piece together... if the Huns are actually going to be a playable civ it'll probably have to do.

Tongwancheng
Buda (Mentioned above)
Gizellamajor
Ivolginsk
Gostivar
Karaganda (Capital of hun state Attila originally came from)
Margus (City they captured)
Moesians (City they destroyed lol...)
Nisava (Sofia)
Philippopolis (Plovdiv)
Arcadiopolis (Another city captured)
Metz (Another city they captured)
Chalons (Or Catalun... I'm pretty sure other civilizations have cities named after battle sites)

a note on religion and Atilla

pope leo would havenever convinced Attilla to turn back for religous reasons; part of attilla power base was that people thought he had been choosen to conqoure by Mars, god of war himself, as he had found his legendary sword (supposedlly); to convert, or to obey a rleigion which refuted the exsitienc eof that God which had supposedlly chosen him was littlerlly, akin to castrateing himself.

So the question my friends is really, would Atilla have castrated himself? Would he? I think not.
