Attitudes towards nudity in the ancient world

Public nudity was as frowned upon in those cultures as is today. The difference was that in certain public occasions, nudity was acceptable. In gymnasia and baths, for example, it wasn't taboo. There was also less hang-up about sex in general, but again, that doesn't mean that there were orgies everywhere; just that sexual activity didn't require so much discretion.

Again, that's what you get when clothes are hard to make and the climate is not harsh.

I think clothing, though now far cheaper, is still more used as a symbol of status than a practical necessity. Its protection is necessary in many places, but it's not the main reason we wear clothes.
