This is quite a worldwide phenomenon. When it comes to Autumn (usually mid-September-End of October) there are festivals relating to dead peoples/ ghosts/ netherworld.

The best known is Halloween.
and even similiar festivals also observed in the East. even here in my homeland. or China.

^ Salakaphati Festivals, hosts at the morning half of the day. between Mid september-End of October each year. Also hosted together with Barge Racing Festivals.

The Fall season has been connected to the dwindling of life and dying because that is what appears to happen in nature. The Chinese autumn festival (harvest moon) is all about eating mooncakes, prosperity and moon worship.

Certainly the Mexican Day of the Dead is all about remembering reverence for the departed. Its origins are murky and the now ubiquitous skulls in fancy dress motifs became popular in the 1940s and has grown dramatically since.
