For simple tutorial using gimp, in other programs it goes about same.

I use gimp, Just cuz, gimp is free (but sucks more than Pay-to-use programs). I'm "newbie" in pic editing world also, so others can do better avatars etc.

I want it to say "Civ" in fiery script letters.

This is just my first attempt. I'm going to keep trying to get the writing to look right... I'll have to go look for some fonts But in the meantime, here is the "beta"

Edit: Okay, here is my second attempt, new font with some lens flares thrown on. I probably overdid the lens flares but you can be the judge of that.

Can you crop it so that it's 100 by 100?

I like the first one and the third for fonts. The first one is better, but the C fades into the background. Also with that font putting ~ before and after may look better.

Ideally the letters should look light compared to the background, as if glowing, instead of the background glowing behind them.

That's not my primary sig font. My primary sig font looks closer to the first font. But I have several backup fonts So you could be seeing any of them.
