Aztec - Montezuma I Thread

When you lead with Sean Bean and then follow-up it up with some intern with no theater training, it sounds pretty mediocre.

No enthusiasm really.

I can't understand it, either. She sounds perfectly fine to me, too. :dunno:

I wouldn't say I am irritated by her voice. But it does distract me. I have read about the vocal fry/creaky voice phenomenon and its increasing popularity in North America but I had not really encountered it before the civ 6 videos. I seems to be absent in contemporary movies and television series from the USA, to my limited knowledge.

Who knows, perhaps one day it will be viewed as a mark of civilization, like having twelve pieces of cutlery next to your plate. I won't judge.

Yea, her voice is fine by me too. I didn't understand the objection either.

Why does the Aztec village have colorful tents and balloons?
Is that written in some history book I missed?
Is that some traditional Mexican custom they tried to merge in with the Aztec Empire?
Is it some modern building depicted because it didn't exist when they were around?
Just a little confused by that.

The point of the videos is just to provide information about the game. It's not meant to be dramatic like the trailer, so I think paying for a trained dramatic speaker (of any level, let alone Sean Bean's) would not be worth it to most people.

And that's not even getting into the supposed need to have a speaker with a "normal" voice so it doesn't bother people that are sensitive to whatever particular type of voice characteristic they're not used to hearing.

Yeah, there's just something jarring for me when I hear a youthful American accent narrating anything historical. It feels disingenuous and superficial, like school projecty. She also kinda sounds a bit like one of the characters from the Big Bang theory and that's pretty off putting in itself. Didn't hear it so much on the Aztec video though, think I was too distracted by how awesome they look

For me it's a couple of things. The tone and copy (writing) reminds me a lot of MOBA style champion preview videos (Here's an example from the now defunct Infinite Crisis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2vR3Y5Dd-E) except that those videos were usually a minute or so longer and so felt like they contained more information, so the comparison isn't favorable.

But, also the hip and modern vocal style weirdly juxtaposes with the age of the civilizations being previewed.

So for me, while they aren't aesthetically ideal, I definitely care more about the information revealed than the package that info comes in. As someone who does VO I could get nit picky if I really wanted to, but I doubt anyone would care very much about that stuff and it is ultimately pretty subjective anyway.

It looks to be a standardized version of the amenities district. I think the ball court was just placed within it as a single building.

That might just be the base look for their entertainment district.

Why, that is a very good point too. My grasp of the matter is that the tents and the balloons in the entertainment complex are generic. Only the tlachtli court is Aztec.

Perhaps the devs will find some time to align the graphics of entertainment complexes with the cultural tastes of some civs. It can't imagine the likes of Montezuma I, Atilla, Djengis Khan or any Roman emperor to be very entertained by a fairground with balloons. I can see them angrily walking across that entertainment complex, popping balloons and being infuriated at their people's lack of understanding of true entertainment.

It's as ridiculous as every city having an Egyptian style obelisk monument in the city center of competing civs... Which is not that ridiculous IMO.

but shes not doing the tech quotes, right? its Sean Bean right? PLEASE, I need Sean Bean to be the narrator.

hopefully stuff like that can be modded. Rome could get trajan style columns, the Aztecs a carved monolyth, etc.

I'm pretty certain Sean Bean has been confirmed as the narrator, but at any rate I think we can rest assured that at the very least the game's techs won't be narrated by a bewildered intern.

Given that Sean Bean narrated both the teaser and the E3 presentation, I'd be shocked (and terribly disappointed) if he wasn't also doing the voice work in the game itself.

Unless they replaced him with Avery Brooks or Patrick Stewart. Then I'd simply be shocked, but not disappointed. :D

Avery Brooks would be awesome! Patrick Stewart too but for some reason I'd really dig Avery Brooks.

Considering Benjamin Sisko is my favorite Star Trek captain and Brooks has one of the most epic voices in existence, he would far and away be my first choice to narrate Civ6...or just about anything else. :D

Is there another Aztec thread somewhere in which we can talk about the Aztecs?

Well, the thread title is technically "Aztec Video" and the narration is part of that video.

However, I do agree. The talk should be focused on Monty and the Aztecs and not the narrator. :)
