I heard a guy on the radio today discussing the option of literaly burying al-Zarqawi in a bacon suit. Obviously this would be done to discourage other muslims from martyring themselves, as their God would be unable to reach them thus denying them their 40 virgins, or whatever it is they believe.

I'm divided. Would this actually discourage muslims from martyring themselves? Or would it just outrage the muslim world, causing even more violence? Or both?

I kind of think it might kind of work a little bit. ;) However, it just smacks of petty, immature retribution that should probably be beneath us. If it would work, even just a little bit, then I'd be all for it. But I wouldn't want to have to be the one to make the decision, because I could also see it all going very wrong.

I caution my brothers on the left to consider the possibility that it might just reduce the over all violence, just as I caution my right wing nut friends :joke: to consider the possibility that it woud enrage the muslim world into much violence, ala the whole 'image of Muhamad' thing.

I'll read some replies and arguments for and against before I cast my vote.

The radio host is an immature idiot who needs to take lessons in cultural world history and sensitivity.

I should note that General 'Black Jack' Pershing did this during WWI. I have no idea what kind of results he got.

Yeah, the Israelies discussed a similar tactic of hanging pork around high profile targets.

It wouldn't work because a) according to the mythology of the religion in question, the martyrs go directly to heaven, they don't pass go or collect $200 and b) don't you think someone skilled enough in indoctrination to convince someone to kill themselves just maybe might be skilled enough to convince someone to kill themselves even though they might get wrapped in bacon after they die?

The point is not shame, but punishment. We should respect people's beliefs, even his hate-fueled ones.

What a waste of perfectly good bacon

 :rotfl:

It would simply enrage the Muslim world and cause even more hatred and violence which will result in the death of more people.

I say go for it.

yeah they should burn the body in charr then cut it up and drag it though the streets of baghdad. Ala blackhawk down style (it worked in somalia)

seriously just bury him in an unmark grave in an non-descipt location. No need to risk martrying him.

I'm for the bacon suit, but we need to bury him with the ultimate indignity--- a CHEESE hat! Who knew Zarqawi was a Packers fan? :p

Will he be sauteed and served with a nice demiglaze? If not why bother?

Only if he get's green eggs to go along with his ham. Otherwise, it's just plain wrong.

He should be dressed in a pink kitten costume.

What's worse? Delicious bacon or Furries?

Here's the legend of General Pershing, for those of you that aren't familiar with it. I say legend because all of these stories are infact largely unconfirmed.

For historical background: in 1911, General John J. Pershing led a garrison of troops in the Philippines, occupied by the United States after the Spanish-American War of 1898.

The legend so goes that Pershing encountered Moslem militants in the southern Philippines, a present hotbed of Islamic separatism. U.S. forces had been under attack by militants, so Pershing orders his men to go round up the men who have been behind these attacks.

The men are brought to the camp and Pershing had them tied to posts; his men brought in pigs and slaughtered them, then taking the blood and fat and covering the bullets in them. Supposedly coming into contact with pork is forbidden by the Koran and that they would not enter Heaven if their bodies had come into contact with the "unclean" pigs.

Now the men shot and executed all but one of the terrorists there; he was set free to inform the others. The Philippines did not experience another terrorist attack for another 50 years.

General John J. Pershing served in Cuba, the Philippines, and World War I. Aside from George Washington, he was the only man ever given the title of "General of the Armies."

Interestingly enough, the nickname "Black Jack" comes from Pershing's sympathy toward black Americans and black soldiers. He later became an instructor at West Point, where cadets upset with his high standards named him "Niġger Jack" after his commanding of the 10th Cavalry, which was at the time a Buffalo Soldier regiment. Reporters changed his name to "Black Jack" during World War I.

I hope that everyone dies.

As a simple correction, it wasnt during WW I, but during the Philippine insurrection around 1911. Whether it was actually Pershing who ordered this is the topic of much speculation. Here is an excellent link in regards to the entire thing: http://www.snopes.com/rumors/pershing.htm

The film, "The Real Glory" with Gary Cooper is an excellent movie btw, that uses this idea in a scene. If you like old war movies rent it out sometime.

Edit: Didnt see Rmsharpes post explaining most of this. Good job.
