I played as the Aztecs for a little while last night. I was disappointed to find out I couldn't upgrade my warriors to Jaguars, maybe I need to upgrade them to axeman first?

But I beelined for ironworking as in directly into the Classical age starting a Barbarian Uprising. At least I suspect it is the return of the uprising (no notification it was) right after I entered Classical, I had about 3-4 barbarians units (mostly warriors and Archers) entering my lone city every turn. And within a 5-10 turns, just enough time to build my first Jaguar, Axemen started showing up at my doorstep...fear set in.

I imagine this was happening continent wide, all the other civs maybe had archers at this point. Most of the barbarian activity seemed to be directed at me though, I had a blast I started churning out Jaguars (had to whip tho) and getting them to 10/17 xp cap fast. Axemen were killers though. After about 15 turns of this, they slowed the pace down to a more manageable level where I could actually move units outside of my city and start moving them to defensible positions to hold off the incoming barb units.

I was in a war with Cyrus at the time all this was happening and made a couple silly mistakes moving too many of my units out of the city to go after Cyrus, I wanted his copper and iron and I'd originally attacked him to steal his worker, then delay his production by defending a forested hill next to his city, I just never got out of the war with him before seeing he had both copper and iron (only ones I'd scouted). Anyhow without the mistakes I could have held off alot more barbarian assaults rather than die to Barbs.

After I died I noticed other civs had gotten 1-2 additional cities and while watching the replay of important events, 3 of those new cities got destroyed/taken by barbs. So any thoughts on using this as a strat? Beelining to Classical to kick off the uprising before any other civs are ready to handle it? I guess the key is making sure you can survive the onslaught! UU's like the Jaguar or Praetorian would play a vital role, of course these are still susceptible to Axemen so it's no guarantee...but you get tons of promotions, before starting your real wars!
