Anybody else been running into fullscale Barbarian Invasions?

I had a good game going as Alexander of Macedonia on Immortal, had a great cap with a bunch of wheat so I was ready to rush watermill and get my city huge. I cleared one camp to my south, one to my east but then this camp to my northwest just starting POURING out Horsemen. I personally enjoy Barbarian invasions but holy crap lol. Anybody else get these many barbs from one camp? I literally had to put all of my production and tech into fending off these guys.

I ended up beating them in the end but it took like 40+ turns (they killed my spearman) so I was pretty behind lol

Yep, on balance the Horse camps are brutal in the early game compared to the rest

Oh, I knew I recorded this back then for a reason.

This was last month when I didn't really know what I was doing (not that I do know now) and I was testing how to deal with barbs, so I set it to deity. It would probably been better to get archery and take the +1 production card as soon as I noted the horse archers.

Still though it happens once in a while and really hoses everything even at lower levels. Pretty lame, but very stoppable. At least it wasn't a coastal spawn with barb ships.... now that's worth the ragequit.

In one particularly nasty game, by turn 20 I had three separate barb camps surrounding me, all churning out horsemen and horse archers. Tough to fight off with just the initial slingers and warriors. Like you, I put so many hammers into defensive production that I fell behind in other development.

Archers do just fine against barb quads. Just bait the quads with a tortoise promoted warrior and let the archers do their thing.

With a start like that playing as China it means you fall behind in rushing wonders which defeats the purpose of playing China in the first place. Can you still play the game? Yes. Have fun? No. What's China good for when you have to give up on early wonders to fight horse archers?

What wonders are you really going to miss out on in the time it takes to clear a nearby barb camp? Stonehenge and Hanging Gardens, maybe, and they are both of dubious value to a human player. You'll still have plenty of time to get the Pyramids or the Colosseum.

Well to be fair, China's probably more notable for the builder charges and the wonders at this point are sorta crap anyways. Won't be able to build mids anyways. Though yea I decided to stop playing at this point.

Does this count?
If you want to encounter a swarm try GOTM23 (this picture is not from there though)

I don't see them a lot anymore, used to be pretty ridiculous, but people in MP have wised up to the barb threat and started proactively razing camps , and the AI in SP has gotten better at expanding so there aren't huge areas of unsettled lands for them to spawn.

Most of the time if I get totally overrun, I just restart. When the barbs kill everything you own, and continually have your city to 0HP (they can't take cities, or at least can't take your capital), and I'm 40 turns in when I finally kill them, with just a damaged slinger, while the AI next door has captured 2 city-states, yeah, that's not really that fun of a game to play.

I had a very bad invasion, looked something like Victoria's picture, but add in 4 or 5 barb warriors to the total. I had 2 horse camps and 2 warrior camps surrounding my start. The game was mercifully short.

The barb horsemen and horse archers are extra annoying because of how quickly they can close in on your city, or on a poor little scout that is valiantly trying to run away through the jungle. Regular warriors aren't quite as bad.

From what I understand, a barb camp will spawn mounted units if a source of horses is within 5 hexes. Maybe that should be tweaked to 2 or 3 hexes so it's less likely that they'll overrun the map so often.

Yeah I built a coastal city after fending off the barbs and surprisingly one quad almost took my city lol. They do a bunch of damage, are ranged so they dont take damage from the city and can only be killed by archers (especially early game when new coastal cities dont have walls).

Oh **** lol

Yeah I agree with that. I dont know how hard it would be to code but the # of hexes should also not include over water. If you look at my original picture the horses the camp were using was on another island to the north lol

Like I said I enjoy barb invasions but these 7 horses from 1 camp definitely take me 40+ turns to clear lol. 3-4 full health barb horses can kill a spearman and when they initially invade they all get a bunch of health from pillaging. Thank god I cleared the other 2 camps first otherwise that game was definitely over lol

I am the lone vote for "What are barbarians?" I never use them.

In previous versions of Civ, they will only give you so many promotions, and then you get no more unless you battle an AI city state or civ.

Do the barbs in Civ 6 give a unit more than two promotions after you have been hacking at them for a while?

After the first promotion you only get 1 XP for a fight vs a barbarian unit. So, while theoretically you can get infinite promotions from them, effectively you are limited to just the first one (you need to fight barbarians 100 times to get the 2nd promotion).

I thought the experience you get was era-dependent, never really thought about it otherwise...

Rosty K,

Thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, it's obvious they don't want you to have units in the early game with an abnormal amount of promotions.

However, this new system at least gives you a chance to make some progress while your kickin' some barbarian ass right at the beginning of everything.

I would use them, but the promotion limit really makes them more of a troubling annoyance that takes away the fun of the game. :-(
