Battlefield 1916

WWI naval warfare would have been fun to play...but of course it never happened in real life.

Unless you want to make a video game about the Italy v. Austria-Hungary naval war!

There was Jutland, though I don't think that would make much of a game on its own.

We tend to overhype the victories in World War Two. It's always the Great Victory, against the Great Evil. Noble, heroic Americans killing the Nazi scourage.

It's Romantacism for the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. And it sells well.

Lots of World War 2 was like that too. War usually is just sitting around waiting for something to happen.

True. For every WWII pilot played in a flight sim, there's a crew chief, a couple mechanics, a guy preparing mess, someone typing up the commander's orders and telegraphing them back to the U.S., &c.

There could be a Christmas 1914 football game.

I agree. World War I was much more traumatic than World War II. There was no clear defined evil, for example. But the moral ambiguity would just make it better, in my opinion.

DICE released Codename Eagle, which takes place in ww1, prior to the Battlefield series. In my opinion a ww1 game would probably be better paced than many modern shooters. It would be like Battlefield 1942, but with bayonets being relatively powerful, zeppelins would act as bombers, dogfighting would be even more fun, classes like engineers could have a more strategic role and tanks would be deathtraps without infantrysupport.

I'd say the main reason it hasn't been made is because the American involvment wasn't heroic enough.

Every mainstream shooting game now has American's versus Nazis, Russians Communists/Russian Fascists, Asian Communists, or Arabs. There was no ideological battle in the First World War, so no way to make it look heroic.

Also there weren't many automatic weapons then. Automatic weapons are fun. Same reason there's not much western shooters.

what about an text based RPG?

No submachine guns = confused and dissapointed players. For instance, the Thomson gets way too much use in WWII games.

I think a WWI game - of any type, not just shooter - as opposed to WWII, would be nice for a change. It wasn't all trench warfare, anyhow.

Back in the day I used to play a game called Red Baron which was a WW1 air combat game. It was kind of fun. I'd play two player with me flying and my friend in the machine gun turret and the bastard kept shooting the tail off of our own airplane!

it would be fun if they can make it to be really massive, like 300 vs 300 face offs, imagine 300 players charging over the no mans land...
