Pre-flight check

Talk about change... it's hard for me to believe I've played in this game before...

Magnetism in 3 @-297gpt, treasury has 313g (!) Take science down to 50%, Magnetism in 4 @ -64gpt, which we can afford.

Let's see... we're in Republic now. Our Army is costing us 102gpt. We've got 2 Size 6 cities that can grow, and a size 11 that can grow... Rome can grow a bit... we've also got some Warriors that can be disbanded.

Diplo check... we're at peace with everybody
18 turns left on a deal with Hiawatha
10 turns left on something with Shaka
18 left on wines to Cleo
18 left on something with Abe, and he has military tradition
17 left on horses to Tokugawa, who is still in the Ancient Age.

So, it appears I have no business making any wars this round.

Little map check..an unsettled (?) peninsula between America and Japan... that's odd, something must have been sacked there. I wonder if i can get a toehold in there...

We have a lot of cities in need of some worker turns

=====

Well, there isn't much to tell. I basically managed to move the game forward, which is probably enough at this juncture. Losing silks IBT hurt us for a turn. Sorry team. I did manage to get us a couple of techs, and into the industrial age.

We stand a pretty good chance of getting Smith's and Newton's thanks to some nice pre-builds from Bede and 'slinger.

At this juncture we should probably decide if we're going to pursue communism>domination or democracy>space race. I think either is feasible, but with everybody else in Democracy, they're going to start to run away tech wise. We either need to get into democracy and keep them in sight, or get into communism and trample them under foot. We are not going to win this in Republic, the military cost (and all these little bitty towns) will eat us alive.

Some notes for the next player:

I've got the research queue set to Steam Power, but it's fresh, so it won't waste anything to change it. We've got a couple of luxuries that are in demand. I didn't see any offers that excited me on my last couple of turns, so I thought I'd leave those decisions to the next better player. You should actually be able to do some stuff in pre-flight if you'd like to.

So, without further ado, here's > > The Save < <

Pre-flight – 1050 AD – Diplo Check – We have some gpt deals with Hiawatha (8 turns), Shaka (18), Cleo (19), Abe (8), and Tokugawa (8)

Tokugawa is in the early middle ages. Doesn’t even have knights yet.

Shaka is down several techs.

If I put together a navy, slinger can take Japan in a few turns.

I can tell I’m following scout, some major building going on. :D

Change Arretium, Hippo, and Artaxata from workers to galleons. Wake up a bunch of ACs, and head them towards Hippo for embarkation to Japan.

Upgrade our caravel to a galleon for 30G. On further study, I think Caesaraugusta will be our embarkation port.

IBT – Hispalis: Bank=> cav
Gordion: worker=> worker

1. 1060 AD – Need some cash for rushing galleons. Drop science by 10%. Steam due in 17.

IBT – Damascus: Market=> Library

2. 1070 AD – Spend 156G rushing a galleon. I think 7 or 8 should do the trick. Gathering forces at Caesaraugusta.

IBT – Hippo: Galleon=>galleon
Seleucia: Harbor=> Market

3. 1080 AD – More maneuvering.

IBT – Antium: Newton’s=> Cav
Asyut: harbor=>court
Everyone cascades to Smith’s

4. 1090 AD – Hurry a galleon in Arretium for 148G.

Renew an ivory deal with Abe for 10gpt.

IBT – Japan & America sign an MA against Zululand.
Arretium: galleon=> galleon
Byzantium: cav=> cav
Bagacum (interesting name): harbor=> duct

5. 1100 AD – More of the same. Two more turns left on the Japanese deal.

IBT – Mecca: cav=>cav
Virconium: court=> univ.
Neopolis: market=> galleon
Lisht: harbor=> market

6. 1110 AD – Final maneuvering for the D-day landing.
Spend 140G on a galleon in Artaxata

IBT – Rome: pentagon=> cav
Palmyra: Bank=> univ.
Artaxata: Galleon=> market
Aurelianorum: Market=> Library

7. 1120 AD – Declare war on Japan and land our forces on the mountain next to Kagoshima. Force includes 14 ACs and our AC army. A spear defends Kagoshima.

Here are intrepid forces on D-Day at 0700:

Bede01_-_Kagoshima_Landing.jpg

To be continued….

Woo-hoo! More cities coming. With the pentagon you can add an ac to army right? Should be a blow out over there. Sounds like communism should be coming by in 20-30 turns or less. Are we still thinking of that? Need to keep our eyes peeled for it to get the SPHC prebuilding in the NE.
We didn't have a Smiths prebuild? :(

barbslinger said:
We didn't have a Smiths prebuild? :(
I believe Smith's was already building when I got the game. I think we had 9 turns left on the build when I finished my turns. The way I read Bugsy's log, everyone cascaded to it, but I don't think anybody finished it. If the cascades were from Newton builds, we should get it - because Bede started a palace prebuild for newtons that had a ton of shields.

We should probably go ahead and start the SPHC build if that's the way we're going to go... and it sounds like we are. Of course, if we get a MGL....

It looks like Bugsy's going to hand you a bridghead for unloading those cav 'slinger. This ought to be interesting...

Edit: Forgot about my screencap - Scroll up Barbslinger....

7. 1120 AD (con’t) –

IBT – Shaka wants to talk – Trade WM, I don’t think so. The Japanese response is the rush build of a spear in Kagoshima.
Syracuse: Duct=> Univ.
Lose our supply of wines.

8. 1130 AD – Bump lux up 20% for the wine loss.
@ Kagoshima: 6/6 AC kills 4/4 spear (-1hp)
6/6 AC kills 4/4 spear (-2 hp & ….

Bede01_-_Kagoshima_leader.jpg

Marc Antony appears
5/5 AC killed by 4/4 sword (-2hp)
16/16 AC Army kills 4/4 sword (-2hp)
14/16 Army kills 4/4 sword (-1hp)
13/16 army kills 4/4 sword (-5 hp)
5/5 AC kills 4/4 sword (-2 hp)
5/5 AC retreats from 4/4 sword (-1hp) fresh sword on top (how many defenders do these guys have?)
6/6 AC killed by 4/4 sword (redlined & promoted)
6/6 AC kills 4/4 sword (-2hp)
6/6* AC kills ¾ sword (-3 hp)
6/6 AC kills 2/4 sword (no loss)
5/5 MDI kills 2/5 sword (no loss & the city finally falls)
3 resisters. Contains granary & market. Why isn’t there any food in the granary? Well looks like you gents will just need to don these scientist outfits until you find some food. What’s that?... you’ll starve. Oh well.
Start a harbor so we can get the silks over the sea eventually.
Antony becomes an Army… The Western legion

Hiawatha now has Steam, but want two arms and a leg.

IBT – The Japanese send nearly everything they have towards Kagoshima
Cumae: Smith’s=> cav
Pisae: Univ=> cav
Hispalis: cav=> cav
Caesaraugusta: duct=> library
Tarentum: Market=> duct
Nicomedia riots. WW already?

9. 1140 AD – Load a 4th vet AC into our AC army.
There are 26 Japanese units with view of Kagoshima. Let’s see how many we can kill. Spears: 3 Swords: 3 Horses: 1 Archers: 4 Promotions: 2 Losses: 3
Plus:
Bede01_-_Kagoshima_2nd_leader.jpg

We’ll save him for something. There are two healthy archers and two healthy swords within striking distance of Kagoshima.

IBT – We lose a pike and an AC. They lose an archer and a sword.
The rampaging Americans have destroyed the Zulu.
Kufah riots.

10. 1150 AD – There are now 12 swords, 4 archers, and 6 spears at the gates of Kagoshima: Archers killed: 1, Swords killed: 2, Spears killed: 4, Promotions: 2 Losses: 1

There are still 10 healthy swords and 3 healthy archers that will attack Kagoshima next turn. There are fortified galleons by Caesaraugusta ready for loading. Good luck slinger. This one looks like it may get a lot more interesting before Tokugawa is gassed.

The leader is on his way home.

Ooh, looks like fun! Will gander at it and play tonight. Do we have an FP yet? That would be good leader usage. I think we're still pretty far from being commies. Are reinforcements inbound? I guess I'll see tonight. Nice work Bugsy!

Hopefully you can withstand the onslaught of Japanese swords at Kagoshima. If you can't it will have been entirely my fault.

I would never place blame on an individual for having courage to attack. Maybe if you landed with 3 units I would have squawked. I'll do my best to CYA. :cool:

Bede01- Romans – 1150AD
Preturn – Looks like a big lead for us! Lux tax is about 84gpt. We can get silks from America for 33gpt and our spices. Deal. I increase research losing 118g this turn to get steam in 1. I’m hoping to parlay it and ivory into a deal with Egypt for Nationalism. Run through all the cities swapping a few to temples and others to courts. It makes no sense to put a library in a town that due to corruption makes only 1-2 gold. What 1 extra beaker? A court will increase the gold/shields and then speed the time to the library which will then make quite a few more beakers. Take a few workers off of multi turn chops to prepare for rails. Why do we have workers planting forests on grassland? Is this a new strat I’m unaware of? A couple other cities swap to a worker skim. Kagoshima indeed looks in peril. I swap to walls and rush for 36g. It will be a battle. But I think we will win.

IT – We hold losing 3 battles and we are really weak now.
Veii – Uni > Wkr, Antium-Cav>Wkr, Kago-Walls>Rax, Byz-Cav>Cav, Nico-Court>Aqueduct, Hippo-Wkr>Wkr, Gordion-Wkr>Wkr. Nico is now pulling 5 of 8 shields while its neighbor is still only pulling 2 of 7 shields.

[1] 1160 – We have 2 coals neither hooked up. 1 in the NE territory and one in the jungle of our path to the NE territory. I was hoping for one being hooked up already. We now have a 12/22 AC army and a 15/16 cav army in Kago. I use the cav army to clear a spear and 2 swords and a 2/5 cav to clear an archer. No leader. That leaves a spear and 2 swords on the mountain. The cavalry army can still attack, and does taking out the spear. The Acav army beats both swords and is now 9/22. We’re a 97.6% favorite if a sword attacks and it probably won’t. I worker rush the rax in Kago for 120 vs 160g for a straight rush. I think we’ll be fine. Brundesiums bank in 11 goes to colloseum in 5 with growth in 6. It is ready to riot and needs a scientist. Rome goes to MilAcad for ToE prebuild in 19 and Byzantium goes to Palace for Hoover prebuild in 72. Catch 6 cities plotting to riot. WW some more. Would be nice to be commies.

IT – No attacks but there are 3 swords, 4 spears and an archer knocking at the door that I can play with. Veii and Antium– Wkr > Wkr(growing this turn. Kagoshima-Rax>Harbor for future dyes.

[2] 1170 – Easily kill all the new intruders. All are ready to heal next turn and then it is pillaging time. Workers should finish coal road next turn too. Other workers are grouping up. BTW, or research is Elec in 13. I have Rome starving a bit to give Antium 5 food. Romes problem will be solved shortly as it won’t lose pop for another 10 or so turns. Just started thinking about the flip chances. Kago is down to 2 pop though. Electricity in 12 with some scientist help. Looks like if you take the time to change tax/science specialists you can find a point where one extra scientist will drop the turns and then set the rest to tax.

IT – No flip, whew, had me worried for a sec. Mecca-Cav>Uni, Antium and Veii-Wkr>Cavs, Lauria-Harbor>court.

[3] 1180 – Coal is online! Begin aligning workers. Kago troops are not healed yet. Another cav army is on the way there. Dyes will be ours! We get 19gpt from Hiawatha for ivory. Just saw Antium had newtons, swap to uni. Hurry 2 courts.

IT – No sign of the Japanese still, this should be a walk. Kufah-Ct>Mkt, Jerusalum-Aque>Temple(it’s ready to grow and cause trouble), Buto-Ct>Market(could go temple if it’s growth hampers it), Teurnia-Harbor>Ct. I move its tiles for growth.

[4] 1190 – About 7 tracks are laid now. I have a big group leap frogging from The jungles towards rome. We take Tokyo with one AC loss. Dyes should be ours next. I weed by leaving the army in Kago. Cavs and another army will arrive next turn.

IT - 2 Iro frigates in cruising in the far north. No galleons. Cumae-Cav>Wkr on growth, Neapolis-Galleon>Ct, Pisae-Cav>Cav, Mediolanium-Temple>Ct

[5] 1200 – Workers going at it. I use the leader to hurry the uni in Newton city. I think I’ll get others. Sure enough, the attack on Tokyo is acav army drops two spears and 1st elite cav produces a leader and takes the city. Rush the harbor in Kago and we also control the Japanese iron. A peek with the cav army into Osaka shows only spears still. Shoot, Tokyo came with a harbor. Wasted some cash there. America won’t give a dime for dyes even though Abe has 1955g. Hiawatha will give some gems for dyes, spices and 18gpt. This allows a lux drop and science increase for elec in 7. Switch all tax to science and get no decrease in turns so swap a lot back to tax. No new techs on the board.

IT – Tokyo is quelled. Antium – Uni > Worker on growth, Kago-Harbor,opps>Temple, Cumae-Wkr>cav, Brund-coll>Bank. America starts US. They have industrial.

[6] 1210 – Lots of roading. We take 4 down in Osaka and Edo lose 2. They should both fall next turn. With the uni addition I thought I’d see if electricity would drop to 5 with scientists. No dice.

IT – Antium-Worker>Cav, Pompeii-Bank>Cav, Hispalis-Cav>Lib, Ceasarea-Aque>Temple.

[7] 1220 – I rush a uni in Mecca with the leader. Edo, Osaka and the bonus town Nara all fall. That leaves Satsuma. I’m going to fortify the remaining leaders for that attack. We get wines and 49gpt for Salt and steam from Cleo. Don’t want her falling to easily to Abe. Adjust sliders and play around and it’s electricity in 3!!!

IT – Mecca – Uni>Worker on growth, Ravenna-Bank>Lib, Syacuse-Temple>cannon. We’re going to need arty someday. I flame Cumae and Jerusalum because I didn’t go all the way up the list. Iro’s start US.

[8] 1230 – We are almost connected from Syacuse to the far north with a large group near Byzantine to pump it’s shields on Hoover prebuild and head east.

IT – Mecca-Wkr>Cannon, Veii-Cav>Cav, Auriel-Lib>Cannon, Augustador-Harbor>Court. 2 more small flames due to growth. Sorry.

[9] 1240AD – We take Satsuma and Trajan appears, headed home. The Japanese are destroyed. All is right with the world and electricity comes in next turn. We can irrigate the Western peninsula.

IT – Anjar – Court>Market in 17. Man they make a difference.

[10] Roading. Byz makes 20 clean shields now. Looks like my MilAcad was premature. It’s down to 7 and we get Medicine in 5. I swap some tiles to get it to 10. Rome has 245 shields and Byz has 142. At present rate it is 20 turns to ToE but that will drop as we see how long it takes to get SciMeth. Rearrange tiles then and drop a worker railing bomb on it. I think around 14-16 turns until ToE. 32 turns to Hoover but that will drop too as we rail. I get Medicine in 4 by kicking up science specialists.

And that is that. Rails are almost from one end to the other. I would dedicate a group to continue on Byz railing so that we can increase shields for Hoovers. 4 turns to Medicine and then figure how to rail/reconfigure Rome for optimum ToE.

I believe I see a pattern emerging here... I get the game, do some basic stuff (whack-a-barb, build stuff for the next whatever) Bugs gets the game, puts some things into position...

...then 'slinger gets the game, and makes sure that by the time it gets back to me, I won't recognize it any more, and it'll take me ten turns just to figure out what the heck is going on!!!! :p

"Nice Turns" doesn't quite describe it well enough... way to go! :thumbsup:

That was great slinger. I don't know about that foresting grasslands stuff. :hmm: Must have misclicked.

So where do you see this going? Develop the homeland and our new Japanese cities and prepare for a landing in America staged from Japan?

You gentlemen certaily know how to move things along. I'm still keen on the Communists to Alpha Centauri.

As for the next target, which one controls the most territory, as that's where we will be most likely to find any missing resources.

Finish the heavy buildings then bring on the revolution!

If we're going Commie, we will actually want to reduce the number of cities we have. The more cities, the more corruption. We will want to have the optimum number of cities and not one more. That number increases with the SPHQ. I'll need to look it up. We will want to have courthouses in every city we want to keep. Jumping to Communism will take some planning.

Sir Bugsy said:

If playing my usual game America would indeed be next, however, I have never been a commie and I'd like to give it a go to get a feel for it. Roman communists in Space is "a funny thing happened". Interested in that OCN and how damaging it is after you get to it too.
BTW, I had a terrible time trying to post last night. Bugs, how do you get 2 pictures to show in the same post?
