Benchmarks: How do you know you're advancing quickly enough?

And for those games that you haven't won, did you localize where exactly it went wrong? Or it's just more of a hobby in a hobby? And by the way, what does a "hybrid" game mean?

This is a third degree interrogation :smoke:

Yes, not only can I re-tell the story of a game but I can analyze it since I keep track of key stats, events and turning points. I do this primarily to keep my head in the game and pay attention to all the important things that I need to pay attention to. Civ fits my style better than any game but many of the older 4X games did the same thing too. If a game doesn't present information well for me to log (like EU), then I don't play it.

A hybrid is where you are doing a mix of things, not sure of a victory condition. My last three games have been very focused (culture, science and domination) so I can learn each of those parts better. But I love warfare, techs, social policies and wonders and my most fun games have been where I get to do a lot of all four.

I keep benchmarks to let me know if I'm on track, like for cultural games I'd like to have Sistine by this time, Cristo by that time, etc. (the numbers change for map sizes and speeds).

If I'm playing for domination, using GS slingshots to get riflemen by 1000 AD kicks @$$.

Riflemen @ 1000 AD!? what kind of beeline is that? Do you still built any wonders and such?

I use the demographics screen quite a bit. There are some universal numbers that are a good guage. For example, where are you positioned for tech? What is your population compared to other civs (population translates to ability to produce science? How much land do you have compared to other civs? The other thing I am looking for is those pop up comparison pages. They are good in-progress checks.

I'm curious:
... how often do you check demographics?

If I check every turn it becomes mind numbing.
If I check every 30 turns (std spd) I fall behind/miss important shifts.
I do my best checking every 18..20 turns.
... and I make lots of notes.

Final thought:
... Keep moving forward

I don't have a set time to check it. It's just when I think about it. I check more often early on because it is important to know where I am, so I can focus my play.

The other check I use is my :c5science: output. I typically look for approximately 200:c5science: at turn 200. It goes up quickly from there, but it is a good guage. If I acheive that metric, I am usually a tech leader in the game. I usually end my games in the early to mid 300s with an :c5science: output of 800 to 1000:c5science: / turn raw production (doesn't include GS bulbs or RAs). I play at Immortal level standard settings.

Every several turns. And military advisor too. It rarely tells something I don't know, but makes me feel better.

Sometimes I'll have a feeling about how I'm doing, and it is just confirmation. On the other hand, I've been pleasantly surprised or shocked on other occasions.

LOL

Endgame :c5science: escalates crazy fast :crazyeye:

One recent game:
... I had so many multipliers going, gov was using just citizens
... I had to manually force GP production to keep the CSs happy 8)
... Last ~50t (launched upper 300s)
... ... :c5science: went from ~250:c5science:/t to over 5k:c5science:/t

If you aren't catching the guy in the lead,
... how you gonna pass him ???

NC around turn 80.
12-15 culture to get one full policy tree.
44-45 culture pretty fast too to get second full policy tree usually rationalism.
200 science at turn 200, 300 at turn 300.

When you get things rolling you shouldnt have any problem at all. This is for Immortal and standard speed.
